Tito Ortiz Headlines Day 1a of the PokerStars Championship Panama Main Event

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Tito Ortiz
Tito Ortiz

Day 1a of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Panama $5,000 Main Event brought in a total of 103 unique players and ended with 43 players moving on to Day 2. Leading the way is Igor Yaroshevskyy, bagging the most chips with 219,600 after eight, 75-minute levels of play.

The star of the show today was Tito Ortiz and continues to be as Day 2 approaches. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter is known for his 31 second knockout back in the day and was the ninth inductee into the UFC Hall of Fame. He managed to bag a very healthy 182,000, good for second in chips, and looks to snag himself a title outside the ring and on the felt.

Team PokerStars Pro Igor Kurganov registered late in the day and it looked like he was going to move on to Day 2 until he ran into aces to bust in the last hand of the night. Kurganov was playing in his first-ever PokerStars Championship Main Event as part of the team. His better half, Liv Boeree, was unable to advance and didn't seem to be able to build a stack at all today.

Notable players making it to Day 2 include Jason Koon (175,500), Steve O'Dwyer (117,000), David Peters (116,100), Ryan Riess (77,300), Byron Kaverman (72,000), Daniel Dvoress (59,800), Sergio Aido (54,200), Team PokerStars Pro Leo Fernandez (41,400), Anthony Zinno (16,800) and Davidi Kitai (10,500).

2017 WSOP November Niner Kenny Hallaert, was in the field today and found himself all in on the turn with a seven-high flush against a nine-high flush. He had two outs to make a straight flush and hit one on the river to stay alive. Unfortunately, his luck ran out eventually and he hit the rail late in the day.

With the $25,000 Single-Day High Roller firing up tomorrow, some of the players who will likely be in that field and took a shot today but didn't advance, include Timothy Adams, Adrian Mateos, Dan Colman, Sam Greenwood, Mike Watson, Justin Bonomo, Stephen Chidwick and Isaac Haxton.

Day 1b kicks off at 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday and will be the last chance for players to get in on this Main Event. There will be eight, 75-minute levels of play and late registration will close before cards are in the air on Day 2 on Thursday at Noon. Keep following along as PokerNews brings you all of the live updates until a winner is crowned!

Failed Bluff Sees Chidwick Hit the Rail

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Stephen Chidwick got up from the table and headed for the exit. We asked him for the details of his bust out and he was kind enough to tell us what had happened, despite the fact that it was a failed bluff that had done him in.

A player in early position raised and the button called before Chidwick in the small blind too called. Chidwick, with {4-}{5-}-suited, checked the {A-}{Q-}{10-} rainbow flop. The action checked around and an off suit {4-} hit the turn for an all rainbow board. Chidwick and the initial raiser checked again and the button bet 4,000. Chidwick check-raised to 11,000 and the initial raiser folded, the button called.

The river came the {9-} and Chidwick shoved for about 20,000. His opponent called with {A-}{J-} and that meant Chidwick had to pack up and leave.

Massive Pot to Ortiz, Eliminating Boeree

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

A short-stacked Liv Boeree was already all in when we got to her table, hammering away on her phone as she awaited her fate with Tito Ortiz in the big blind and Lokesh Garg contesting a side pot. The board read {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{q-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and Ortiz put 15,000 into a 20,000 side pot. Garg called, and the river was a {5-Hearts}. Ortiz put 30,000 in this time and got a quick call. He flipped {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} into the middle for a boat, and Garg showed {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for the nuts on the turn.

The PokerStars Team Pro showed {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and wished everyone good luck.

Hallaert Doubles With Straight Flush

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Straight flush for Hallaert
Straight flush for Hallaert

Right before the break, Kenny Hallaert opened the action with a raise to 1,100. The big blind defended.

The big blind check-called a bet of 1,300 on {J-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} before checking again on the {5-Clubs} turn. Hallaert continued with a bet of 3,000 and saw the big blind check-shove. Hallaert called for 11,000 total.

Kenny Hallaert: {6-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Big blind: {2-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Hallaert had just two outs and hit one of them with the {3-Clubs} on the river!

After doubling with quads earlier today, now a straight flush for Hallaert to see his stack go times two. Unfortunately for Hallaert, he's still under starting stack.

Ortiz Making Waves

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Tito Ortiz
Tito Ortiz

We caught the action from the flop as the big blind checked on {4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and Tito Ortiz (under the gun) bet 2,000. He got called in two spots; the hijack and button wanted to see a turn, the big blind folded.

Ortiz bet another 3,000 on the {7-Spades} turn and again both opponents committed as well.

On the river {9-Hearts}, Ortiz bet a hefty 20,000. This time, both opponents mucked.

Yaroshevskyy Drags Huge Pot

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
PokerStars Championship Panama
PokerStars Championship Panama

A player opened under the gun and got three-bet by Vidmantas Beliauskas on the button, who put in 4,000. Igor Yaroshevskyy called that bet in the small blind, and the opener mucked. Yaroshevskyy checked the {5-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop, and Beliauskas bet 4,000 again. Yaroshevskyy made it 15,000 to go, and his opponent instantly put in 35,000 more. Yaroshevskyy shoved for Beliauskas' last few chips and got a quick call.

Yaroshevskyy showed {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for top set. Beliauskas let out what sounded like a curse and flung his cards high in the air. One {a-Hearts} landed on the felt, while the {a-Clubs} landed stuck between another player's back and his chair. Once it was retrieved, the dealer brought forth the {6-Spades} and {k-Diamonds}, and Yaroshevskyy has one of the biggest stacks in the room now.

Double Knock Out! Barbero and Colman Gone

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Nacho Barbero
Nacho Barbero

Nacho Barbero opened the action with a raise to 1,000 from first position. He picked up no fewer than 4 callers and the flop came {6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.

Small blind Dan Colman shoved for 7,725 and big blind Eduards Kudrjavcevs folded. Barbero asked for a count before he called. Swedish PokerStars qualifier Sebastian Hinderoth squeezed allin for a whole lot more and action was back on Barbero soon enough.

Barbero tanked for a bit before he eventually, reluctantly, called.

Dan Colman: {3-Hearts}{5-Hearts}
Nacho Barbero: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Sebastian Hinderoth: {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}

The {Q-Spades} on the turn and {7-Diamonds} on the river were both blanks and both Colman and Barbero got up from the table to make their exit. We're not entirely sure, but it looks like Sebastian Hinderoth is the chip leader. Hinderoth has no recorded cashes on TheHendonmob.com, but that might just change here in Panama this week. He's off to a great start!

Tito Ortiz Spikes the River to Stay Alive

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Felipe Ramos and Tito Ortiz
Felipe Ramos and Tito Ortiz

With 3,000 in the pot and a flop of {5-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, Jose Da Silva Paulo Demeyere checked from the big blind and UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz fired out 4,000 from the under-the-gun position. Martin Kus folded from early position and Demeyere woke up with a check-raise to 11,000.

Ortiz made the call, which left him just 7,550 behind. After the dealer burned and turned the {J-Diamonds}, Demeyere moved all in and Ortiz opted to call off.

Ortiz: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Demeyere: {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Demeyere was ahead with two pair, but you can guess what happened by the title of this post. The {J-Hearts} spiked on the river to give Ortiz a bigger two pair and new life! Demeyere was left with 8,500 after the hand.

Haxton Axed

Nível 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

Isaac Haxton raised preflop and got a couple of callers, seeing {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop. He bet 700 into approximately 2,500, and Davidi Kitai called on the button. Julian Stuer put in a raise out of the big blind, and Haxton committed his remaining chips, around 4,600. Stuer quickly called when Kitai mucked.

Haxton: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Stuer: {k-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

Stuer needed a fourth diamond on board and found one in the {6-Diamonds} river after a {3-Clubs} turn.

Adams Eliminated

Nível 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Timothy Adams
Timothy Adams

It was a short run in the Main Event for Canadian high roller Timothy Adams. He had a bet of 5,000 in front of him in the last hand he played, with {7-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{4-Spades} on the felt. Lokesh Garg check-raised to 11,500 and Adams responded with an all-in shove for 26,000. Garg called.

Garg: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Adams: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Top two was no good for Adams, and he didn't improve on the {a-Spades} river.
