Bryn Kenney Leads $50,000 Poker Players Championship After Day 2

Nível 12 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Bryn Kenney
Bryn Kenney

When the elimination of Phil Hellmuth only scrapes into the top stories of Day 2 of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship, you know it was an action-packed day.

Today saw the largest PPC field since 2013 generate a prize pool of over $5.3 million, with $1,449,103 awaiting the winner. Only 41 players survived to Day 3 with just 17 players guaranteed a min-cash of $83,738.

Bryn Kenney moved atop the chip counts midway through the day, and never looked like falling too far from the peak ahead of bagging 2,064,000. He leads Michael Moncek (1,702,000), 2021 WSOP Main Event champion Koray Aldemir (1,427,000) and Brazilian Yuri Dzivielevski (1,405,000).

Day 2 Recap

A field of 81 players returned for the start of day, and would swell as players drifted in over the additional four levels of late registration on Day 2. Stephen Chidwick, Ap Garza, Brian Yoon, John Monnette, Craig Chait and Dylan Linde were all among the players who hopped in today.

Overnight chip leader Luke Schwartz continued his ascent, but it was three-time PPC champion Michael Mizrachi who was the first player over the million-chip mark after eliminating Randy Ohel with kings against Ohel's aces.

Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

He was soon joined by Bryn Kenney, Daniel Weinman and David Williams in seven-figure stack territory, the latter of which doing so in "ugly" fashion after eliminating Yuval Bronshtein.

Then there was the arrival of Hellmuth. In two hands of seven card stud he became short, and inside of 90 minutes he was gone; busting at the hands of Benny Glaser and Dave Rogers in a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo. His time in the PPC was short but not especially tweet, exchanging barbed comments with Adam Friedman.

More players soon chipped up over a million as the field continued to shrink, but it was Bryn Kenney who never wavered during the latter stages to be the only play over two million chips with 41 players returning for Day 3.

The tournament resumes at 2 p.m. local time for six more 100-minute levels on Tuesday, June 28. Stay tuned to the PokerNews live updates for continued coverage of the Poker Players Championship.

The three remaining players checked fifth and sixth street and Kihara bet on seventh street. Bellande called and Eslami raised. Kihara tank-folded and Bellande called.

"Sevens full," said Eslami tabling {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}

"Where were the bets on fifth and sixth?" asked a stunned Bellande.

"You mean when [Kihara] had trip sixes?" replied Eslami.

Noori Avoids Lamb Chop

Ben Lamb
Ben Lamb

Omaha Hi-Lo

Most of the chips of table short stack Ben Lamb were already in the middle prior to the {a-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop and he was then all-in for 85,000 total in order to get snap-called by Mike Noori.

Ben Lamb: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Mike Noori: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{5-Spades}

Things were looking very dire for Lamb but he gained some equity for a potential chop on the {6-Spades} turn, asking for a five. Instead, the {10-Clubs} fell on the river and Lamb was eliminated just before the final four hands for the night were announced.

Razz Rush Has Baker Chirping With Excitement

Razz

John Racener lost a big portion of his stack while Adam Friedman further soared up the leaderboard.

In the meanwhile, David "ODB" Baker won the third Razz pot in a row and loudly proclaimed that when he got Racener to fold on fourth street with a pair of sevens showing.

David "ODB" Baker: {x-}{x-} / {7-}{10-}{a-}{3-}
Daniel Negreanu: {x-}{x-} / {7-}{q-}{5-}{j-} folded on sixth

Baker then completed and was called by Daniel Negreanu. With the advantage appearing on every street, Baker bet all the way to sixth street on which Negreanu eventually folded after catching more paint.

Baker missed the six in a row when he folded a jack to the completion of Racener before their table broke soon after since Talal Shakerchi had been eliminated.

Literal Chip and a Chair for Deeb

Nível 11 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Pot-Limit Omaha

On a completed board of {j-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}, Scott Bohlman in the big blind bet 50,000 into a pot of around 90,000. Shaun Deeb then raised to 144,000 with 1,000 behind and that sent Bohlman into a tank of nearly six minutes.

He asked the dealer for the exact bet size and then how much the size of the pot was. Smiling and trying to engage in some table chat, Bohlman was seeking some information while Deeb was deeply focused and staring at the middle of the board only.

Bohlman ultimately called and Deeb rolled over the {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for pretty much a bluff. Bohlman had that beat with the {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} for a straight and that's when Deeb complained that it was not allowed for the dealer to announce the size of the pot with action already taken place.

Deeb spun up the single chip to 15,000 with a chop and a double before he then forfeited the big blind against a raise and three-bet in Limit Hold'em.

In the meanwhile, David Moskowitz has been eliminated and Daniel Negreanu was moved into his former seat.

Both players drew one and this time Julia check-called a bet.

"Wheel," said Cates tabling {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}

"And that's how you win bracelets," remarked tablemate Shaun Deeb.

Hellmuth Chopped Up and Out of Poker Players Championship

Nível 10 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Omaha Hi-Lo

Dave Rogers raised and Brian Yoon three-bet from the button. Benny Glaser called in the small blind and Phil Hellmuth pondered his decision from the big blind. The bet was exactly the same size as his stack and he eventually put it in the middle. Rogers also called.

The three players still in the hand checked the {k-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop. Glaser bet on the {9-Hearts} turn and Rogers was the only caller.

The river was the {6-Hearts}. Glaser bet and called a raise from Rogers.

Dave Rogers: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades} — Ace-high flush; eight-six low
Benny Glaser: {a-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts} — Two-pair (aces and nines); six-four low
Phil Hellmuth: {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs} — Six-high straight; six-five low

Rogers and Glaser chopped the pot with a shell-shocked Hellmuth getting to his feet and moving over to Adam Friedman at an adjacent table.

"Well Adam," said Hellmuth. "I guess you were right. You are the better player."

"You're not playing Phil?" asked Shaun Deeb spotting Hellmuth exiting the tournament area.

Hellmuth Gets Short Within Two Hands; Jibes With Friedman

Nível 10 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Seven Card Stud

Phil Hellmuth had already mucked his board while Dave Rogers meshed his cards together, exposing {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for a full house. Both engaged in some table chat and Rogers admitted he already had too many chips of his short stack invested and put Hellmuth on "maybe a pair of tens".

Dave Rogers: {x-}{x-} / {j-Spades}{9-Spades} folded on fourth
Phil Hellmuth: {x-}{x-} / {6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{10-Spades}{j-} folded on sixth
Brian Yoon: {x-}{x-} / {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{q-Spades}{4-Diamonds}

The next stud hand followed shortly thereafter in which Brian Yoon completed and received two callers. Yoon paired his king right away on fourth to bet and Hellmuth was the only caller. Another bet by Yoon and call by Hellmuth followed on fifth before Yoon bet sixth to force out Hellmuth.

More bad news for Hellmuth came shortly after when an animated discussion with Adam Friedman from one table over unfolded.

Apparently, both had a discussion about the mark-up charged by Hellmuth for this very event in which the 16-time WSOP gold bracelet winner entered in the last level of the registration period.

Hellmuth was heard remarking "Why would you try to tilt me in the $50k you motherf*****" to Friedman.

The spat was still going on a few minutes later.

"Don't ever come up to me in a tournament again. Even the guys at my table are saying you're out of line," he said. "Just know you'll never win as much as me so there's probably some jealousy going on."

"Come on bud," Matthew Gonzales said to Hellmuth in an attempt to defuse the situation.

Smith Finds a Fold After Seven-Minute Tank

Nível 10 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

No-Limit Hold'em

Koray Aldemir raised on the button to 14,000. David Benyamine three-bet to 58,000 in the small blind and Dan Smith four-bet to 135,000 from the big blind. Aldemir folded and Benyamine called.

Benyamine checked the {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop over to his opponent who bet 75,000. Benyamine then check-raised all in for 372,000. Smith, to put it mildly, went into the tank.

Smith thought about his decision over the course of seven minutes. With an effective stack of 430,000, he wouldn't be all in but he would be left with just 55,000 behind.

"I have a bad hand," he said to Benyamine.

"Good news," said Benyamine. "Very good news."

Smith deliberated some more, apologizing to the table.

"I know you have a bad hand," piped up Benyamine. "I'm relaxed."

"It's possible I have the best hand," said Smith, apologizing again. "You can call the clock if you want"

Jesse Klein did so, but no sooner had the floor begun the countdown, he mucked his hand.
