Dan Cates

What shapes up to be the largest $50,000 Poker Players Championship in several years is en route to surpass more than 100 entries for the first time since 2014. The crown jewel of the mixed game schedule during the 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas has attracted 91 entries so far and registration remains open for another four levels on Day 2, which is slated to recommence at 2 p.m. local time.

The Main Event for mixed game enthusiasts at the WSOP features a nine-game rotation including No-Limit Hold'em, Seven Card Stud, Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, Razz, Pot-Limit Omaha, Limit Hold'em, Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better, No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, and 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw. These games will switch every orbit and challenges the high-stakes regulars to showcase their skills in a variety of poker variants in an attempt to claim the highly sought-after gold bracelet.

With the attendance of the previous two editions having already been surpassed, defending champion Dan Cates returns with a top ten stack of 617,000. Whether or not his name will be engraved once more on the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy in a few days time remains to be seen, as he certainly faces some tough competition.

Luke Schwartz tops the leaderboard with a stack of 893,000 after knocking out Josh Arieh and doubling through Julien Martini during the final hands of Day 1. The Brit is followed by Bryn Kenney (802,000), while Shaun Deeb (718,500) and Bryce Yockey (715,000) are separated by only a few chips.

Three-time PPC champion Michael Mizrachi (435,500) and two-time winner Brian Rast (160,500) are also in contention in a field filled with live poker's biggest names. To put things into perspective, the tournament already attracted eight former champions, six Poker Hall of Famers, and five WSOP Players of the Year on Day 1.

Late registration for the five-day tournament remains open for another four levels and the following dinner break until approximately 10;20 pm local time. All new contestants will receive 300,000 in chips to start and reentries are not possible (freeze out format). The levels during the entire tournament will last 100 minutes each and players will get 15-minute breaks after every level.

Stay tuned for the PokerNews live coverage for one of the stellar events during the 2022 WSOP in its new home at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas, as the journey to crown the next Poker Players Champion will unfold in the following four days!

Rast Pays Off Kenney; Busts to Fraser

Nível 7 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

No-Limit Hold'em

On the tail end of a heads-up pot between Brian Rast and Bryn Kenney, the board showed {k-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Rast checked and then faced a bet worth 19,000 by Kenney, which sent him into a tank. The reluctant call followed and Kenney had the best hand in {j-Spades}{10-Clubs} to leave Rast with his head shaking.

Two hands later, Rast opened to 9,000 off a short stack and Chris Fraser eyeballed the chips of his table neighbor before pushing all in with a near identical stack in the small blind. Kenney forfeited the big blind and Rast instantly called.

Brian Rast: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Chris Fraser: {a-Spades}{3-Hearts}

The {10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop kept Rast in the lead but Fraser picked up additional outs on the {5-Clubs} turn. Sure enough, the {4-Diamonds} fell on the river to give Fraser a wheel and the stacks were counted. Rast had 94,500 and was covered by a mere 1,500, and eliminated.

Katz Joins; Kenney Bests Leng

Bryn Kenney

No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Ryan Leng opened to 10,000 from under the gun. Bryn Kenney three-bet to 40,000 from the button and Leng called.

Both players drew one. Leng bet 100,000 and Kenney called.

Cary Katz had recently joined the field, and during this hand the table — including Leng — had been discussing Katz's now infamous stand pat all-in with a pair of fours at the $10,000 2-7 Single Draw Championship final table.

"I have Cary's hand," said Leng tabling {4-}{4-}{7-}{6-}{2-} with Kenney showing {9-}{7-}{5-}{3-}{2-} for the winner.

Monnette Eliminated by Bronshtein

Nível 8 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
John Monnette
John Monnette

Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Yuval Bronshtein had raised and then called the three-bet shove by John Monnette for 68,500. Both discarded one and the dealer burned already, which sent Monnette into a frenzy.

"What are you doing, the cards are supposed to go up! It is in the TDA rules" he demanded. That's when the dealer by mistake flipped over the {6-Hearts} which happened to be the discard of Monnette.

Moments later, they both turned over their cards and Monnette was trailing with the {8-}{6-}{4-}{2-}. Bronshtein showed {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-} and spiked an {10-} as the final card.

As Monnette peeled the final card, he added "fifty fifty chance" before he exposed the {6-Spades} to pair his six and exited the tournament area.

What Was Sammartino's Fourth Card?

Dario Sammartino
Dario Sammartino

Pot-Limit Omaha

Dario Sammartino opened to 8,000 and got three callers in Benny Glaser, Anthony Zinno and Dave Rogers. The flop {q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts} checked around. The turn was the {j-Spades}. It checked to Zinno on the button who bet 17,000. Sammartino and Glaser called.

The river was the {9-Diamonds}. Sammartino bet 75,000 into a pot of 87,500. Glaser folded and Zinno tank-folded.

"Yes!!" said Sammartino emphatically as soon as Zinno folded.

"You can't do that and not show," said someone at the table. Sammartino opened {k-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} but mucked his fourth card.

On the next hand Rogers, Ali Eslami and Sammartino checked to Glaser on {k-Spades}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades} who bet 6,500. Rogers and Sammartino called.

The turn was the {k-Clubs} and Rogers check-called 17,000 from Glaser. The river was the {q-Diamonds}. Rogers bet 40,000 and Glaser folded. Rogers showed {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for a full house.

Ap Garza completed and Chad Eveslage raised. Nicholas Julia called, as did Garza. Eveslage bet on fourth street and got two calls. Eveslage paired his ace on fifth street and bet again, this time getting two folds.

"He's nuking it," said Julia. "And then gets the bailout package!"

"I was nuking it for sure," said Eveslage.

"And I get the ace first and then he pairs his," said Garza.

"You had queens?" Eveslage asked Julia.

"Of course!" came the reply.

"I had aces," said Eveslage.

A Pair of Deuces Never Loses ... in PLO?

Nível 9 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Yuval Bronshtein
Yuval Bronshtein

Pot-Limit Omaha

Yuval Bronshtein raised to 9,000 in the cutoff and Luke Schwartz called on the button. Lyle Berman then announced raise out of the small blind without declaring an amount and first pushed nine yellow T-1,000 chips forward before he attempted to raise it to 30,000 in total.

The floor was called and since the ruling had been changed a few years ago, it was ruled as a forced min-raise to 14,000. That brought David Williams in the big blind along and the calls by Bronshtein and Schwartz followed with Bronshtein joking that this might develop into a huge pot.

On a flop of {9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, Berman bet 60,000 and Williams raised to 240,000 near instantly. "Oh wow, it might really happen," Bronshtein said and gave it some consideration before he then moved all-in. That got rid of Schwartz and Berman before Williams asked for a count.

"It's around 450k," Bronshtein said almost immediately and Williams then asked for an exact count, which happened to be 436,000. The call of Williams followed and the cards were turned over.

Yuval Bronshtein: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
David Williams: {j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

"I am winning, no deuce please," Bronshtein said with a big smile on the face.

The turn was a blank {k-Spades} but the brutal {2-Clubs} fell on the river, as Bronshtein's smile froze. Both stacks were quickly checked and Williams had indeed slightly more chips at his disposal to win the large pot with a mighty pair of deuces.
