Anderson Leads The Final 55

Nível 8 : 400/800, 200 ante
Calvin Anderson
Calvin Anderson

It was a short day of poker here in the orange section of the Amazon room as the entrants in Event #43: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball participated in their first eight levels of play. A total of 87 players hit the felt for this event, making it the smallest field so far (and probably overall) at this year's WSOP. That being said, the field was stacked to the brim with the biggest names poker has to offer. At the end of the night, it was Calvin Anderson who bagged up 134,700 for the biggest stack among the final 55. Paul Volpe finished hot on Anderson's heels and bagged up 127,000 for second in chips.

With poker's elite showing up for this prestigious $10,000 buy-in event, it's no shock that some of the names to fall early in the day were those of very notable and successful players. Jason Mercier was one of the first to go and others like Darren Elias, Brandon Cantu, Mike Gorodinsky, George Danzer, Galen Hall, Josh Brikis, Barry Greenstein, Todd Brunson, Mike Matusow, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, and Brian Rast all followed suit. Phil Hellmuth, who finished runner-up in this event in 2011, also saw a short day of play. Hellmuth had a confrontation with Volpe that seemed to put him on a downward spiral which ended in him busting a short while after. Also to find an early exit was 2011 champion and 2012 sixth-place finisher John Juanda, who fell at the hands of Max Pescatori late in the day.

While those players found themselves with nothing but felt to look down at, others were able to turn their starting stack into more chips to carry on for Day 2. Tom Schneider (115,200), Layne Flack (102,200), Naoya Kihara (88,200), Matthew Ashton (82,000, Max Pescatori (66,000), 2010 champion David "Bakes Baker (55,500), Phil Laak (53,900), Bernard Lee (50,100), Phil Ivey (43,100), Erik Seidel (35,500), Billy Baxter (26,900), and Johnny Chan (16,100) are a small sample of those coming back for the second day of play.

Also returning for Day 2 is reigning champion Nick Schulman. Schulman owns two WSOP bracelets and both of them are courtesy of this event. Schulman won his first bracelet in 2009 and then was able to repeat his victory in 2012. It seemed that Schulman would return as one of the shorter stacks but he was able to score a knockout at the end of the night to pad his stack for Day 2 play. He will return with 45,800 in chips.

Play will resume at 2:00 PM on Monday right here in the Amazon room. Be sure to tune into PokerNews tomorrow as continue the quest to crown a champion in the only No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball event of the 2013 WSOP!

Schneider's Number Four

Nível 8 : 400/800, 200 ante
Tom Schneider
Tom Schneider

We caught up with the action post-draw to find Erick Lindgren and Tom Schneider heads up in a hand. Both players are having stellar years, with Schneider recently winning his second bracelet of the year and fourth overall, and Lindgren winning his second bracelet as well. When we found the two sparring, Lindgren checked over to Schneider on the button who tossed out 8,000.

Lindgren came over the top with a raise to 21,000 and Schneider wasted little time announcing a call.

"Eight-seven-six perfect," said Lindgren, tabling {8-}{7-}{7-}{3-}{2-}.

"I've got ya," replied Schneider as he fanned {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-} for number four.

Schneider dragged in the sizable pot and now has about 82,000 in chips while Lindgren's stack has fallen to about 20,500.

Hellmuth Gone

Nível 6 : 250/500, 125 ante
Phil Hellmuth - Eliminated

After his last encounter with Paul Volpe, it seems that Phil Hellmuth entered a downward spiral. We arrived at the table to find him open to 1,300 before the draw. Tobias Wenker raised to 3,200 from the next seat over and it folded back to Hellmuth who shot the rest of his stack in the middle for less.

Hellmuth announced that he was drawing one and Wenker stood pat, rolling over his hand.

Wenker: {10-}{9-}{7-}{5-}{4-}
Hellmuth: {8-}{7-}{3-}{2-}

Hellmuth was drawing live with his final card in front of him.

"I have a feeling it's going to be paint. It feels like paint. I've had a wheel draw four times today," said Hellmuth very quickly. It was indeed paint as he picked up the {J-Diamonds}, giving him the second best hand. Hellmuth stormed out of the tournament area and disappeared quickly from sight. Wenker dragged in the pot, satisfied with having slain a world champion.

Volpe Bests Two World Champions

Nível 6 : 250/500, 125 ante
Paul Volpe
Paul Volpe

Johnny Chan opened with an early position raise to 1,600 and Paul Volpe called from the cutoff. Phil Hellmuth peeked at his cards from the small blind and moved out a three-bet to 7,000. Chan took a moment and looked at his cards once more before moving out a call. Volpe decided to call behind.

Hellmuth checked before the draw was even complete and Chan checked as well. Volpe knocked the table back and the dealer prompted the players to table their hands.

"Queen," announced Hellmuth.

"No good," shot back Volpe, showing {10-}{9-}{6-}{5-}{2-}.

Chan quietly looked at Volpe's hand and mucked his own. Hellmuth threw his hand away but nothing about the exchange that occurred afterward was quiet.

"He calls seven-thousand with a nine. It's just insane," Hellmuth muttered to himself. "If I get some chips I have a shot to win. You on the other hand..." he trailed off.

Volpe quietly replied with something that we couldn't hear, but this was when Chan chimed in.

"Did he say he had a queen?" asked Chan.

Volpe confirmed that was what Hellmuth said.

"I had him beat anyway!" said Chan.

Hellmuth continued to speak lowly even as the next hand begun. The PokerBrat now has about 19,000 in chips while Volpe is thriving at 42,000. Chan is just around starting stack with 31,000.

Tiller Gives Extra Value To Pescatori

Action began with John Monnette making an early position raise to 1,075. Dee Tiller called from the cutoff and it folded to Max Pescatori who three-bet to 3,500 from the small blind. Monnette called the raise and Tiller decided to tag along as well.

Pescatori came out swinging by firing two pink t5,000 chips into the middle. Monnette thought for a moment but ultimately decided to release his cards. Action was then on Tiller who responded by throwing out three pink t5,000 chips for 15,000. Pescatori immediately flung out one more chip.

The floor was called and the bet was determined to be a min-raise by Tiller. Tiller showed {8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-} but was beat by Pescatori's better eight-low with {8-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}. Tiller looked frustrated by losing an additional 10,000 in chips due to the min-raise, but Pescatori was left smiling as he now has about 43,500 in chips.

Nine-Eight-Sevens All Around

Nível 4 : 150/300, 75 ante
Brian Hastings
Brian Hastings

Brian Hastings popped it up to 1,000 from late position and George Danzer was the sole caller from the small blind.

Both players drew one card and Danzer was first to act after the draw. He tossed out 1,700 and Hastings quickly flat called.

Danzer rolled over {9-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{2-} and declared a ninety-eight.

"NInety-eight?" asked Hastings with a worried tone. "Oh, nine, eight seven?"

Hastings fanned {9-}{8-}{7-}{4-}{3-} and the two quickly released that Hastings' nine-eight-seven-four was the best hand. Danzer flung his into the muck and a surprised Hastings happily stacked new chips. The 2012 bracelet winner now has about 34,000 in chips while Danzer has dropped to 20,700.

No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball Kicks Off

Chips and Cards
Chips and Cards

Welcome to our coverage of Event #43: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball here at the 2013 World Series of Poker! We are live from the Amazon room to provide you with live updates from the tournament floor for what is arguably one of the most coveted bracelets on the schedule. Why, you ask? Many top name pros refer to No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball as "pure poker". Players play without community cards or upcards and are therefore given zero information about their opponent's hand when compared to their own. With this in mind, the game sparks lots of action and a "go with your reads" mentality. This, coupled with the $10,000 entry fee, means that this tournament will spawn one of the smaller fields of this year's WSOP. While the field will remain small, the competition will be fierce, as most of the game's top professionals will be taking a seat for this event.

Last year this tournament had just 101 runners and was won by the one and only Nick Schulman. Schulman was able to defeat Mike Wattel heads up to claim not only his second WSOP bracelet, but also his second bracelet in this very event (Schulman also won the $10,000 2-7 bracelet in 2009). Also present at last year's final table was John Juanda, who defeated Phil Hellmuth heads up in this event in 2011, famously denying the PokerBrat what would have been his then 12th bracelet. Other names to appear at last year's final table include George Danzer, Benjamin Parker, Ashton Griffin, and Bob Bright.

We expect to see fireworks fly early here in the Amazon room as players attempt to consistently show down the worst hand possible in order to clasp a gold WSOP bracelet around their wrist. Play kicks off at 5:00 PM PST, so be sure to stay tuned as we bring you all of the action from the felt!
