The Final Table in Montenegro is Set; Sontheimer Holds Commanding Lead

The money bubble has burst and the unofficial final table of the 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series Montenegro HKD1,000,000 Main Event at the Maestral Resort & Casino in Budva, Montenegro is set. German High Roller regular Steffen Sontheimer holds a commanding lead at the top of the counts after shooting towards the top of the leader board in the penultimate level of the night.

After 39 entries on Day 1 sent the tournament off to a promising start, the number was guaranteed to grow further thanks to four levels of late registration on Day 2. Ultimately, a field of 63 entries emerged, consisting of 41 unique players and 22 re-entries, and the top nine spots were guaranteed to take home a portion of the HKD59,270,400 (~$7,550,129) prize pool.

In the last scheduled level of the day, a frantic bubble period with several double ups came to an end with the elimination of Stephen Chidwick, who bubbled the second tournament of the high stakes festival in a row after falling short by one spot in the 6-Max Event two days prior. Chidwick got it in good with ace-queen against the ace-jack of Rui Cao, however a jack on the flop sealed the fate for the Brit and that set up the unofficial final table.

Sontheimer holds more than two times the chips of his nearest followers after bagging up 3,980,000, while Canada's Peter Jetten (1,960,000) and Mikita Badziakouski (1,945,000) are separated by just three antes. The other finalists include Ivan Leow (1,655,000), aforementioned Rui Cao (1,610,000), defending Triton Super High Roller Series Montenegro Main Event champion Manig Loeser (1,590,000), Day 1 chip leader Wai Leong Chan (1,305,000), Steve O'Dwyer (1,155,000) and Dietrich Fast (350,000).

Action of Day 2

The first level of the day started with a set-over-set debacle for Steve O'Dwyer, who ended up on the wrong end with pocket treys against the pocket nines of Patrik Antonius. Paul Phua busted and re-entered only to bow out from the very seat once more, while other notables such as Koray Aldemir and Jason Koon also had to head to the registration desk.

Within one hour from each other, Bryn Kenney scored two double eliminations, but the American High Roller wizard also missed out on the money after running with ace-queen suited into pocket aces. Both winners of the two previous events at the Maestral Resort & Casino during the seven-day festival were among those to bust on Day 2 in Richard Yong and Phil Ivey. Yong's three barrels with king-jack high were no good against the rivered flush of Orpen Kisacikoglu and Ivey jammed queen-jack into the pocket aces of eventual chip leader Steffen Sontheimer.

The redraw of the last two tables took place with just 15 hopefuls, as Yaqi Sun and Christian Christner busted at the same time on different tables. As soon as the action resumed, defending Main Event champion Manig Loeser doubled through Isaac Haxton and Andrew Robl busted on the feature table. Dominik Nitsche's bid for the High Roller title came to an end when his top pair and nut flush draw ended up second best to the queen-ten of Ivan Leow, who got there with two pair on the river.

What followed was the sudden rise of Sontheimer, who first doubled with queens against the eights of Marius Torbergsen and then knocked out Orpen Kisacikoglu with ace-king versus ace-jack in a matter of 20 minutes. Haxton lost most of his chips with ace-jack against the pocket kings of Rui Cao and Torbergsen bowed out to set up a dramatic bubble time. After several double ups, Dietrich Fast was on the brink of elimination, being reduced to two and a half big blinds only, but instead it was Chidwick that was sent to the ropes without anything to show for.

The action will resume at 1 p.m. local time on Thursday, May 17th, 2018, with 20 minutes left in level 17 at blinds of 20,000/40,000 and a running ante of 5,000. A live stream with hole cards displayed and English commentary by Kane Kalas and Randy Lew will be available on a security delay of 30 minutes.

And that's what all the nine finalists are playing for with the equivalent in USD and Euros:

Stephen Chidwick Bubbles Again

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Dietrich Fast moved all in to claim the blinds and antes while there was an all in and call on the other table as well.

Rui Cao raised to 80,000 on the button and Stephen Chidwick moved all in for 540,000 out of the small blind. Ivan Leow seemed interested in the big blind, but let go, while Cao called for around half of his stack.

Stephen Chidwick: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Rui Cao: {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}

The {J-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Hearts} flop improved Cao to a pair of jacks, and the {2-Spades} turn and {5-Spades} river were both blanks. Chidwick had already bubbled the 6-Max Event and did so again for the Main Event after a roller coaster bubble period with several double ups.

All remaining nine players are now bagging and tagging, they will return tomorrow at 1 p.m. local time to play down to a champion.

Fast Gets Miracle

Dietrich Fast
Dietrich Fast

Steffen Sontheimer opened the action with a raise to 85,000 from the cutoff and Dietrich Fast got the last of his chips in from the button, with Steve O'Dwyer also making the call from the big blind.

The flop came down {5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{q-Spades} and O'Dwyer checked it over to Sontheimer, who flicked another 85,000 off the top of his stack. O'Dwyer made the call and the {10-Diamonds} turn came in, bringing two checks from the two players in action.

The {5-Diamonds} river completed the hand and the betting, O'Dwyer turned over {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs} to chop the side pot with Sontheimer, who turned over {a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. Fast tripled to 270,000 with {a-Spades}{j-Spades} to avoid elimination.

Fast In Need of a Miracle

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Steffen Sontheimer - Dietrich Fast
Steffen Sontheimer - Dietrich Fast

Steffen Sontheimer limped in and Dietrich Fast in the big blind raised to 135,000, Sontheimer came along. On the {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} flop, both players checked and did so again on the {3-Spades} turn. After the {10-Hearts} river, Sontheimer checked and Fast bet 125,000.

Sontheimer check-raised to 775,000 and Fast asked for a count on the bet, then checked his own stack and tossed in a single chip for the call. He flipped over his {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and Sontheimer revealed {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a straight to reduce his fellow countryman to two and a half big blinds on the money bubble.

Chidwick Doubles Through Leow

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Stephen Chidwick - Ivan Leow
Stephen Chidwick - Ivan Leow

There is a great deal of chip swapping and doubling up going on at the bubble, and that trend continued. Stephen Chidwick moved all-in for 290,000 from the small blind and Ivan Leow made the call to put the Brit at risk.

Stephen Chidwick: {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Ivan Leow: {j-Hearts}{7-Spades}

The flop came down and extremely sweaty {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} bringing something for both players, but Chidwick still had the best of it and remained in front when the {2-Hearts} turn and {8-Diamonds} river completed the hand, giving Chidwick trips and a much-needed double-up.

Chidwick Doubles; Cao Follows Suit

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Stephen Chidwick pushed out of the small blind for 460,000 and was called by Ivan Leow in the big blind.

Stephen Chidwick: {J-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Ivan Leow: {K-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

The board came {J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{J-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Chidwick doubled, while Rui Cao said in French that he was still on tilt after losing the massive pot to Ivan Leow just a few minutes prior.

Two hands later, Cao moved all in for 590,000 from the cutoff and Chidwick announced the call on the button. Manig Loeser in the big blind used his last two time bank extensions and folded.

Rui Cao: {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Stephen Chidwick: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

The {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} flop gave Cao top pair and Chidwick was left with just one out or a runner runner full house. The {7-Clubs} turn reduced the outs to the {9-Clubs}, and the {K-Spades} river let Cao double, sending Chidwick right back to the bottom of the counts in a dramatic bubble period.

Double Double

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Chan Wai Leong
Chan Wai Leong

On both tables there was an all in and a call. The first one was an open-shove of Dietrich Fast out of the small blind into the big blind of Chan Wai Leong, and the latter snap-called for 720,000 in the big blind.

Wai Chan Leong: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Dietrich Fast: {Q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

The board came {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and Leong doubled.

Over on the other table it was Ivan Leow raising the action from the cutoff and getting into a raising war with big blind Rui Cao, who was the man to pull the trigger first from the big blind. Leow called instantly and the cards were revealed.

Ivan Leow: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Rui Cao: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

The {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{7-Spades}{q-Diamonds} run out saw Cao take a big hit and Leow earn a timely double.
