Kayhan Mokri Leads as Marcelo Simoes and Simon Brandstrom Chase a Repeat on Day 3

Marcelo Simoes
Marcelo Simoes

They’ve already made it this far in a record-shattering field of 2,294 players and survived the money bubble. Now the 210 remaining on Day 3 of the €5,300 2022 PokerStars and Barcelona©Casino European Poker Tour Main Event have their eye on the final table and, ultimately, the €1,714,000 top prize.

Leading the way is Norway’s Kayhan Mokri, who has just $21,000 in live tournament earnings but 1,303,000 chips, nearly 300,000 more than his closest challenger.

That happens to be someone who is no stranger to lifting an EPT trophy. Just three months ago, Marcelo Simoes beat a field of 1,073 in Monte Carlo to win €939,840. He currently sits in second place with 1,068,000 as he tries to become only the third player with multiple EPT titles, and the first ever to go back-to-back.

Another player with good memories of Casino Barcelona is Simon Brandstrom. The Swedish pro has had three years to call himself the reigning EPT Barcelona champion and has put up a valiant defense of his title, taking 473,000 into Day 3. Another past winner here, 2016 champion Sebastian Malec, is sitting on 156,000.

Other notable names on Day 3 include Artur Martirosian (814,000), Gaelle Baumann (408,000), Timothy Adams (387,000), and PokerStars ambassador Benjamin Spragg (144,000), while Stephen Chidwick (148,000) and David Peters (36,000) find themselves near the bottom of the leaderboard.

Day 3 will begin at noon local time on Level 17, with blinds at 3,000-6,000 and a 6,000 big blind ante. Play will consist of six 90-minute levels, with a 20-minute break after each level and a 75-minute dinner break after Level 20. A shot clock will be introduced starting today, with players receiving five time bank cards.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand providing updates throughout Day 3 as the ultimate prize, victory in this record-setting event, inches closer and closer.

Loeliger Scores Massive Pot

Nível 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Paulina Loeliger
Paulina Loeliger

The action was picked up in a pot of roughly 80,000 on a flop of {q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades}. Tien Dung Pham bet out 25,000 from the big blind and Paulina "Poker Bunny" Loeliger made the call on the button.

The {7-Spades} hit the turn and Pham checked to Loeliger who bet 50,000, which was called. The {3-Clubs} completed the board and Pham checked again. Loeliger took a moment before moving all in, covering the 90,000 stack of Pham who went deep in the tank. After using several time bank cards, Pham elected on a fold, sending the huge pot to Loelinger.

After losing that pot and being short stacked, Pham found himself all in a few hands later and was eliminated.

Spragg Eliminated on Classic Flip

Nível 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Benjamin Spragg
Benjamin Spragg

PokerStars Ambassador Benjamin Spragg had gotten his remaining stack of roughly 110,000 in on the button and was at risk against Jimmy Guerrero in middle position.

Benjamin Spragg: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Jimmy Guerrero: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

It was a classic flip, and the popular streamer known as "Spraggy" fell behind on the {k-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop. The {a-Diamonds} turn gave a bit of extra hope with a flush draw, but the {2-Spades} river bricked out as Spragg's ladies were the death of him, and the last red-spade representative in the field was eliminated.

Martirosian Raises the River; Busts Chidwick

Nível 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Artur Martirosian
Artur Martirosian

Artur Martirosian bet 13,000 on a flop of {4-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} from middle position and was called by Giovanni Petroni in the small blind.

Both players checked the {8-Spades} turn before Petroni led out for 35,000 on the {9-Clubs} river.

Martirosian came back with a raise to 85,000 and Petroni used a time bank before folding.

The hand earlier, Martirosian and Stephen Chidwick got the rest of Chidwick's 160,000 in the middle on a board of {4-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Chidwick had {6-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for the rivered flush, but Martirosian showed {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a higher flush to send Chidwick to the rail.

Davies and Sorensen Chop After Both Backing Into Quads

Nível 17 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Seth Davies
Seth Davies

Seth Davies and Torben Sorensen played a very memorable hand at Table 21 that ended in the two chopping with the nuts.

PokerNews picked up the action on {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} with Davies in the cutoff and Torensen on the button. Davies checked the flop and Torensen fired a bet of 30,000. Davies called.

Davies checked again on the {6-Hearts} turn and Torensen sized up to 55,000. Davies, with his face concealed by a grey baseball cap pulled over his eyes, used a time bank and called.

The {6-Spades} river put quads on the board and Davies again used a time bank as he sat stoically in his chair. Eventually, he announced "all in," only to get snapped off by Sorensen. Davies tabled {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for the stone nuts with quad sixes and an ace kicker. But holding the nuts wasn't enough to earn Davies the pot as his Danish opponent also held the nuts with {a-Spades}{7-Spades}.

"That's one of three rivers where I don't have a hard decision," Davies said after the hand.

"It's funny: One of you is bluffing on the turn and the other is bluff-catching. Then you both have the nuts on the river!" laughed Gergely Kulcsar from the one seat. "It's fun to watch you guys."

"It was a fun hand," agreed Davies.

Bendinelli Doubles Through Rheem as Cierco Caught in Crossfire

Nível 18 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

Before the break, Anthony Cierco moved all in for around 30,000 and Chino Rheem flat-called behind him. Giuliano Bendinelli then three-bet jammed a stack of about 250,000 and Rheem called.

Anthony Cierco: {q-Spades}{5-Spades}
Giuliano Bendinelli: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Chino Rheem: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

The board ran out {6-Spades}{q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Hearts} to give Bendinelli a straight to eliminate Cierco and double through Rheem, who was irritated with how the hand played out.

"I wanted him to re-shove," Rheem grumbled. "Back to square one!"

"Of course," said Bendinelli. "If I'm shoving eights, I'm shoving ace-jack and ace-queen."

"Yup," replied Rheem.

Sinclair Spikes the River to Double

Nível 18 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Jack Sinclair
Jack Sinclair

Jack Sinclair raised to 16,000 from the cutoff as action folded to Fabiano Kovalski in the small blind. He shoved all in and Sinclair quickly moved his last 131,000, as well as his tiny pig card protector, into the middle.

Jack Sinclair: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}
Fabiano Kovalski: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

Sinclair got no help on the {3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs} board, but the {10-Diamonds} fell on the river to give him two pair, tens and deuces, and a double up.

Gaelle Baumann

Gaelle Baumann opened to 16,000 from early position, Carlos Ribeiro three-bet to 40,000 from middle position, and Emmanuel Lopez four-bet to 120,000 from the small blind. Baumann then jammed for 267,000, Ribeiro folded, and Lopez called.

Gaelle Baumann: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Emmanuel Lopez: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Baumann had the slightly better pocket pair, and the board ran out {7-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Clubs} to secure the Frenchwoman's double.

Emmanuel Lopez raised in early position and David Peters three-bet jammed his short stack from the hijack. Lopez called when the action got back around.

David Peters: {a-}{j-}
Emmanuel Lopez: {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Peters couldn't stay ahead as the board ran out {j-Hearts}{9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} to pair Lopez' queen and mark the elimination of the American high stakes pro.

Wang Takes Three-Bet Pot

Nível 18 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Michael Wang
Michael Wang

Hamed Sedini opened from the hijack for 18,000 and Jack Salter made the call from the small blind. Michael Wang elected on a three-bet to 60,000 and only Sedini came along.

The dealer fanned out {9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, Wang continued for 40,000 and Sedini quickly called. On the {5-Hearts} turn Wang kept the aggression up with another bet, this time to 60,000.

Sedini went deep in the tank, using two time bank cards, before reluctantly making the fold.

"Did you fold jacks?", said another tablemate, trying to get information from Sedini who didn't answer the question.
