Event #31: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship

Dia 1 Concluído

Kevin Dowling Leads Seniors Event After Day 1

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Kevin Dowling
Kevin Dowling

A record-breaking field sat down today for Event #31: Seniors Event and at the end of it, 694 remain. A total of 5,389 players sat down, besting the previous record of 4,499 from last year. This was in part due to the new re-entry policy available to players.

The event becomes the 23rd biggest WSOP field size ever, just under 300 players short of the field size of the 2005 WSOP Main Event.

Big names and amateurs, November Niners and first-timers. All different types of players joined the event to start on their quest to winning the ‘Golden Eagle Trophy’ including defending champion Johnnie Craig.

He was joined by the likes of Neil Blumenfield and Cliff Josephy, former WSOP Main Event Champions Greg Raymer, Chris Ferguson, Scotty Nguyen and big names such as Billy Baxter, Mike Sexton, Men Nguyen, Barry Greenstein and Bill Klein.

The payouts were confirmed today and the money bubble burst. Those lucky enough to make it into the top 809 were rewarded with a $1,499 payout, but all will be setting their sights on the $617,303 for first prize and a much-coveted WSOP gold bracelet.

This first prize is the third highest payout in Seniors Event history and is a bigger first prize than 58 of last year’s 69 bracelet events.

By the end of the day it is Kevin Dowling who leads the remaining players bagging up an astonishing 160,800 from the starting stack of 5,000. That is 33 starting stacks and Dowling explained that it should really have been another player at his table who bagged up the chip lead.

"He had a good chip lead and was probably the tournament boss, but he lost with King-ten against Kings on a ten-high board,

"Then I got pocket nines in against his flush draw and he got eliminated. That was an hour ago and if he won both of those he would have been here and not me.

When we informed him that he was potentially the chip leader, he let himself have a little fist pump after a long day's play

"It's just been general accumulation over the course of the day."

Other stacks around the Amazon room come the close of play include: Georgios Karakousis (158,300), Martinus Kaspers (157,300), Jim Earnest (142,600), David James (135,000), Greg Raymer (101,400), defending champion Johnnie Craig (95,000), Dan Heimiller (22,500), Bill Klein (23,300), Cliff Josephy (19,900) and Joe Somerville (7,000).

The players will return for Day 2 on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Defending Champion and 2016 Final Tablist Make the Money

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Johnnie Craig
Johnnie Craig

Johnnie Craig has been a busy man since we last saw him in Pavilion showing off his bracelet. Some things never changed and during the brief pause in the tournament we spotted him sharing his bracelet with his new tablemates.

Craig has made the money, as well as Joe Somerville who finished fourth. Sadly, Jim Lotfi busted before the money was reached.

Bubble Bursts

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The remaining 809 players are all in the money. One of the hands that burst the bubble, negating the need for a hand for hand process was when Frank Bengs called an opponent's 10,500 shove from the cutoff with Ace-King against his opponent's pocket nines. By the end of the river, Bengs had knocked out his opponent, who was left standing waiting to see if he had made it into the money.

Sadly he hadn't, and the likes of Gerald Trask (1,300) and John Carlsen (800) managed to squeak into the money.

Joining these pair of short-stacks in the money were Dan Heimiller, Barny Boatman, Greg Raymer, Bill Klein and Cliff Josephy.

Also making the money was Jess Hamilton who made his way in through a $100 satellite and has now parlayed that into at least a $1,499 payday.

Gary Marshall Spikes a Jack to Survive

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

A player in the cutoff moved all-in for about 20,000. Gary Marshall quickly called with his 12,000 left from the small blind.

Marshall: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

The dealer swiped {5-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Spades} on the table. The {q-Diamonds} came on the turn and Marshall was getting ready to go until the {j-Spades} completed the board.

''That's a 1,400 bubble'' a player at the table said. Marshall smiled.

Manuel Sadornil on Fire

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

A player in early position moved all-in for a total of 18,500. Action folded back to Manuel Sadornil on the button and he snap-called.

Sadornil: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

The board came {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and Sadornil raked in the pot.

Joe Hachem a Casualty Before the Bubble

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

One player raised to 1,500 and there was one caller before Joe Hachem moved all in for around 19,000. Brian Kay was in the next position and he moved all in himself. The two other players folded.

Hachem showed {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Kay showed {q-}{q-}.

As Kay so eloquently put after the hand: "I called and then I just bopped him!"

Kay now sits on around 30,000 with the bubble looming.

Mimi Roeder Doubles Up and Eliminates a Player as Money Bubble Approaches

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

Mimi Roeder was in a three-way all in pot holding {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs} against the {9-Spades}{9-Hearts} of one opponent and the {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} of another opponent.

The board read {9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Hearts} with Roeder rivering a straight to eliminate one player and double up through another.

There is currently just under 1000 players remaining, with only 809 guaranteed a return on their money.
