Aguiluz Bags Best of 33 Survivors on Day 1d of $365 PLO GIANT

The penultimate starting flight of the inaugural PLO GIANT kicked off at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the 2018 World Series of Poker and drew a total of 565 entries. After 21 levels, just 33 players were left standing at the conclusion of Day 1d play. It was Hero Aguiluz (1,275,000) who bagged more chips than any other, claiming the chip lead.

Close behind him are Australian player Daniel Laidlaw (1,050,000) and Argentinian Gonzalo Mercade (1,045,000). However, all of them are still trailing Day 1a chip leader Pete Arroyos, who will take 1,757,000 chips out of the bag when Day 2 play begins.

Several familiar faces advanced alongside the chip leaders, including Vincent Moscati (590,000), Matt Stout (500,000), Men Nguyen (470,000) and Pete Chen (175,000).

Although not all the fan favorites were fortunate enough to survive the day, several of them made the money before departing, including Ben Yu, Jonathan Zarin, and Roland Israelashvili. Quite a few of the more well-known players who took to the felt in this flight left empty-handed, including Tommy Le, Kyle Bowker, Allen Kessler, Ankush Mandavia, and Chris Ferguson.

The money bubble broke without hand-for-hand play since Dutch Boyd busted during the hand it was reached.

The final starting flight will begin Sunday, July 1st, at 7 p.m. Day 2 play begins July 2nd at 2 p.m. with all Day 1 survivors and the remainder of the field is scheduled to play down to a winner on July 3rd.

Aguiluz Wins a Massive Pot

Nível 21 : 12,000/24,000, 0 ante

There was a massive pile of chips in the middle and the {7-Spades}{5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop was on board when we got to the table. Hero Aguiluz got his stack in the middle against two other players; one had a smaller stack and Mark Liedtke had him covered.

Hero Aguiluz: {A-Spades}{J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Mark Liedtke: {A-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}
Opponent: {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Aguiluz found himself in third place behind the nut boat and Liedtke's flopped trips. That changed when the {J-Clubs} hit the turn to give Aguiluz jacks full and leave his opponents drawing to one out apiece. The {K-Spades} river changed nothing and Aguiluz took the pot to become the chip leader.

McDermott Makes Quads

Tim McDermott was under the gun and got all the chips in before the flop against a player in middle position.

Tim McDermott: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

McDermott found himself trailing his opponent's aces and needed to improve in order to win. The board ran out {K-Spades}{J-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} to give McDermott quad kings to take the pot and stack his opponent.

Chung Doubles Through Madsen; Nearly Stacks Him

Nível 19 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

Stephanie Chung raised to 40,000 from early position and Jeff Madsen called from the big blind.

The flop came {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and Madsen checked. Chung bet 30,000, Madsen shoved, and Chung called with the smaller of the two stacks by a narrow margin.

Stephanie Chung: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Spades}
Jeff Madsen: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Both players flopped trip aces with a queen and would split the pot if nobody improved. The {3-Diamonds} hit the turn to give Chung aces full of threes to take the lead and the {4-Spades} river was no help to either player. Chung took the pot to double up, leaving Madsen extremely short.
