Phil Ivey Eliminated By Max Steinberg in Largest Pot of the Main Event

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Phil Ivey - Eliminated
Phil Ivey - Eliminated

Phil Ivey began the day by chipping up from 198,800 to 330,000 in Level 11. He appeared on the verge of jumping into the top five, but lost a sizable pot to fall back to about 180,000. After grinding his way to back up the counts to about 425,000, Ivey got his chips in again with a chance to command a top-five stack, but what appeared on the surface to be a golden opportunity was in fact the worst case scenario for him.

Ivey raised to 7,500 from under the gun and was called by Olaoluwa Okelola in the hijack, Max Steinberg in the cutoff, and Anthony Gregg in the big blind.

The flop came down {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Gregg checked to Ivey who bet 16,000. Okelola raised to 41,000, Steinberg called, and Gregg folded. Ivey took a few moments before reraising all in for roughly 416,000. Okelola folded, but Steinberg called immediately and tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Ivey was left with one out in the deck as he showed {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}.

Neither the {5-Spades} turn nor {Q-Spades} river saved Ivey, ending his Main Event.

The usually stoic Ivey exited through the back of the ESPN stage with his hat in his hand, slapping it as he made his way to the back hallways of the Rio.

Meanwhile, Steinberg now sits second in chips with just above 1 million after starting the day with a mere 39,000.

Trip Deuces for Shalamov

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Mikhail Shalamov and David DeNoon were just involved in a postflop battle that saw the pair reach fifth street with the board showing {K-Spades}{2-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. That's when Shalamov fired a bet of 15,500 into the middle — around two-thirds the pot — and DeNoon called without much hesitation.

Shalamov tabled {5-Spades}{2-Spades} for trip deuces, and DeNoon mucked.

Mortensen Gets Shown a Bluff

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen

We caught camera crews swarming around Carlos Mortensen's table so we headed over to see what the commotion was. There was over 100,000 chips in the pot with the board reading {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. The player that Mortensen was in the pot with put out a bet of 60,000 and the former Main Event champion was in the tank.

After about a minute and a half Mortensen released his hand.

"Get the cameras around for this one," the player said. He showed {A-Hearts}{8-Spades} for no pair and just a gutshot straight draw.

"If I could beat the nine, I would've called," Mortensen said.

Either way, Mortensen was forced to give up the pot and he dropped to just about 160,000 chips after the hand.

Al-Darwich Over Zolotow

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Somar Al-Darwich
Somar Al-Darwich

Somar Al-Darwich opened with a raise to 6,500 from under the gun and it folded all of the way back around to Steve Zolotow in the big blind who called.

The flop came {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Zolotow checked, Al-Darwich bet 11,000, and Zolotow called. The turn brought the {A-Spades}, and Zolotow again bumped the table twice with a closed fist to check. Al-Darwich bet 22,000 this time, and after pulling out the calling chips and turning them over in his hand for a moment, Zolotow called again.

The river was the {K-Diamonds}. Zolotow checked once more, and Al-Darwich quickly set out a bet of 46,000. Zolotow showed his hand to his neighbor — {8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} — and folded.

That pot pushes Al-Darwich back up over 850,000 and into what appears to be second position currently behind leader Dick van Luijk.

Steinberg Back Above 500K

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Anthony Gregg raised to 7,000 in early position and Olaoluwa Okelola three-bet to 21,500 on the button. Max Steinberg, in the small blind, four-bet to 48,000 and Gregg got out of the way. Okelola called to see a {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop, but folded to Steinberg's bet of 55,000.

Guagenti Loses One

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

From middle position, Nick Guagenti raised to 7,500. The player in the big blind called, and the two of them took a flop of {K-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Spades}. After the big blind checked, Guagenti bet 7,500. His opponent called.

The turn was the {6-Hearts}, and both players checked. They also checked when the {5-Spades} landed on the river.

Guagenti's opponent showed the {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for top pair, and Guagenti mucked his hand.

Kenny Tran Shoves Into Kaverman's Aces

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Kenny Tran Eliminated
Kenny Tran Eliminated

With two raises in front, Kenny Tran four-bet all in preflop for around 110,000. Action folded back to Byron Kaverman, the original raiser, and he re-shoved. The three-bettor folded, the hands were tabled:

Tran: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Kaverman: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}

The dealer delayed the flop while the ESPN crew made it over to the table, and once the cameras were in place the board rolled out {Q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Kaverman chipped up to 315,000, and Tran made his way out of the Amazon Room.

Mizrachi Gets Some Back From Ivey

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Phil Ivey raised to 7,500 from middle position and was called by four opponents, including Michael Mizrachi on the button. The flop came down {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and Ivey bet 20,000. Only Mizrachi came along to see the {Q-Hearts} turn which Ivey checked. Mizrachi bet 25,000, prompting a fold from Ivey.

Galfond Doubles In Wild Coin Flip

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Phil Galfond
Phil Galfond

A player in middle position raised it up to 6,000, and Phil Galfond moved all in for his last 69,000 from the cutoff. As soon as the action got back to his opponent, he dropped in chips for the call, and Galfond was relieved to see he was in a coin flip situation.

Galfond: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

It looked all but over for Galfond when the flop came down {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{9-Spades}, giving his opponent trip aces. Galfond was hoping for a two outer now, and the dealer flipped the hand around when the {6-Hearts} hit the turn. The whole table audibly reacted to that card, except for the two players involved in the hand. Galfond could still lost the hand if an ace,king, or nine came, but the river brought the {7-Clubs}.

Galfond, who lost a huge pot to Tommy Hang just before dinner, is now back up to 155,000.
