Day 2c Concludes with Kroon Maintaining Lead

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Mark Kroon
Mark Kroon

Day 2c has come to a close here at the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event. The Rio was a jam-packed place for poker's greatest tournament all day long, with play taking place in all three rooms. At the end of the night, Mark Kroon finished on top of the leader board with 507,300 in chips.

Kroon began the day as the overall leader, and picked up right where he left off. In the first level of the day, Level 6, Kroon was involved on a flop of {K-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs}. He led with a bet of 2,525, and one opponent called before a third player in the hand raised to 6,000. Both Kroon and the other player called, and the turn brought the {4-Hearts}. Kroon led again, this time for 10,025. Both opponents called. Then, on the {6-Diamonds} river, Kroon bet 10,575. The next player called before the third folded. Kroon showed the {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for trip sixes and won the pot.

Plenty of big name poker pros, celebrities and athletes were in the mix today including Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Jason Mercier, Phil Hellmuth, Nate Silver, Haralabos Voulgaris, Gerard Piqué and Roberto Luongo, just to name a few. Of that bunch, Ivey, Mizrachi, Hellmuth and Voulgaris were the ones that advanced.

Negreanu was eliminated in Level 7, the second level of the day, when he couldn't overcome and opponent's pocket tens with his {A-}{K-}. Mercier also lost with {A-}{K-}, losing out to a player's pocket aces.

Two former Main Event champions, Jamie Gold and Joe Hachem, were also eliminated on the day. Gold fell in a cooler situation against Gregory Liang where the 2006 champ turned a Broadway straight against Liang's turned full house. Drawing dead, it wouldn't be a repeat run for Gold.

In big-time athlete news, both Piqué and Luongo hit the rail today. Piqué hit the rail thanks to James Alexander, and Luongo was busted by Bryan Buonocore.

While many, many players hit the rail, plenty also survived. Several of those survivors thrived on the day, including Vladimir Geshkenbein, Victor Figueroa, William Reymond, Dirk Van Luijk, Ryan Olson, Chris Lindh, Jean-Robert Bellande, Glen Chorny, Ty Reiman and Stephen Chidwick.

All remaining players who advanced from Day 2a/b and Day 2c will return tomorrow at 12 p.m. for a combined Day 3. This will be the first time many players have tangled with one another, so things should be interesting from the get go. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for all of the live coverage from the 2013 WSOP Main Event.

Grinder Trends Upwards at the End of the Night

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

We caught Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi playing a few pots just before the night ended and he managed to win all three, despite switching tables between the first and second hand.

In the first hand, Mizrachi opened with a raise to 2,500. He drew two calls, one from the small blind. The flop came down {4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and all three players checked to see the {7-Diamonds} on the turn. Action checked to Mizrachi who fired a bet of 5,000. Only the small blind called. The river was the {7-Spades} and the player in the small blind checked again. Mizrachi bet out 15,000 and the player in the small blind eventually folded, showing a {10-} for a busted straight draw.

"What did you want?" Mizrachi asked after the hand. "You didn't want a six." Mizrachi showed a {J-} and then he was promptly moved to another table in the back of the silver section with Jean-Robert Bellande and Humberto Brenes.

For his first hand at his new table, Mizrachi opened to 2,500 again. Everyone folded and Mizrachi took down the pot. He showed the {A-Diamonds} and blew on it before mucking his hand and passing it to the dealer.

On the third hand, Mizrachi opened for a third time. The player to his direct left reraised to 12,000 and action folded back to Mizrachi who called. "That's strong," Mizrachi said upon seeing the reraise. The flop came down {10-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{6-Spades} and both players checked to see the {2-Hearts} on the turn. Mizrachi bet 20,000 on the turn which drew an immediate fold from his opponent who showed {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}.

With that, Mizrachi is pushing close to 400,000 in chips which would be a strong finish for the day, but not quite his highest for Day 2.

"Your Hands-Played-to-Set Ratio is Very Strong"

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Haralabos Voulgaris has lost more than half of his stack.
Haralabos Voulgaris has lost more than half of his stack.

We found Haralabos Voulgaris, on the button, against the small blind, on a board of {3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{q-Spades}{5-Clubs}. The small blind had check-called a bet on the flop, and he check-called 11,000 on the turn. The river was a {2-Clubs}, and the small blind led out 15,000. Voulgaris raised to 41,000.

"Well, that's bad," the small blind said, leaning back in his seat. After about 30 seconds, he called. He showed {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for a set of eights, and Voulgaris couldn't beat it.

"Your hands-played-to-set ratio is very strong," Voulgaris said dryly.

Hulyk Looking Strong As Day 2c Nears a Close

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Dar'Ya Hulyk
Dar'Ya Hulyk

Every year, one of the stories that grows progressively larger the longer the World Series of Poker Main Event runs is which female entrant will last the longest. Two years ago, Erika Sands (then Erika Moutinho) took 29th in the Main Event for $242,636. Last year, Gaelle Baumann finished in 10th place for $590,442 and Elisabeth Hille took 11th for $590,442. This year, the early eyes have been placed on Dar'Ya Hulyk.

Hailing from Ukraine, Hulyk has four results on record and one WSOP cash from 2011. For that score, she took 14th in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event for $30,431. Her others cashes are for $10,873, $15,447 and $4,225, bringing her total career earnings to $60,976.

While it's still very early in the 2013 Main Event, Hulyk is looking very strong at her table. While Baumann and Hille set the bar extremely high last year, and Loni Harwood has also cemented herself in the 2013 poker history books, it's going to take a lot for Hulyk top it all. But with roughly 220,000 chips at Day 2c nears a close, it looks like she's ready to knock on the door.

Van Luijk Has Eyes Set on the Chip Lead

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Dirk Van Luijk
Dirk Van Luijk

After an under-the-gun raise of 2,500 and two calls, Dirk van Luijk popped it up win a min reraise to 5,000. All three players called.

The flop came down {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and action checked to van Luijk who bet 10,000. He drew one call before the player who was under the gun jammed all in for 59,800. Van Luijk called as did the other player who called the initial bet. The turn was the {Q-Spades} and van Luijk moved all in for the side pot, which was dry at the time. The other player folded leading van Luijk and the player who was under the gun to a showdown.

Van Luijk: {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}
Under the Gun: {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The under the gun player was already drawing dead so it didn't matter when the river fell the {2-Clubs}. Van Luijk collected the huge pot which put him close to the top of the pack.

Break Time; Mizrachi Still Leads, Gold Gone in Cooler

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

The penultimate level of the night is over and the remaining Day 2c players are heading on a 20-minute break.

Level nine began a little slower then usual with players adjusting back into the swing of things following a long dinner break. Ebony Kenney and Amal Bounahra led the casualties while Jason Mercier, Eric Baldwin, Joseph Cheong and Pieter de Korver were also found on the rail.

However it would be husband and wife combo Laura Green and Scott Born that may have some words to exchange to each other as Born managed to double through Green and another player to stay alive when he rivered Broadway.

Just as the final few hands were about to be dealt, Jamie Gold was involved in a cooler hand when he turned a straight with {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} only to run into a turned full house by Gregory Liang. Gold let off a series of profanities before making his way to the rail to leave the Main Event short of another previous Champion.

The same tale of chip leaders would hold true throughout the level, and although both Michael Mizrachi and Mark Kroon would relinquish some chips, they both would sit up top with Mizrachi having around 440,000 and Kroon sitting with 400,000.

Joseph Cheong opened to 2,500 in middle position, a player three-bet to 9,600 out of the small blind, and Cheong moved all in for 34,600. His opponent snap-called.

Cheong: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The board rolled out {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{6-Spades}, and Cheong hit the rail.

Gold Gone; Liang Wins Cooler

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold

Following a preflop raise, a call from the button and one from Gregory Liang in the small blind, Jamie Gold three-bet an additional 10,000 from the big. The original raiser folded and the button called before Liang made a four-bet to an additional 15,000.

Following some confusion between the exact amounts, Gold smooth-called, as did the button to see a {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}{10-Diamonds} flop. The action was checked round to see the {Q-Hearts} land on the turn and Liang move all in for over 50,000.

"I don't think I can fold!" announced Gold as he stood up.

"Holy s**t!" Holy s**t!" Gold added as he continued to deliberate.

"No way I can fold this hand!" finally stated Gold as he slid in his final 40,000 as the button player - who had been texting on his phone for the duration of the hand - open-folded {A-}{K-}.

Gold: {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}
Liang: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

"F**k me!" screamed Gold repeatedly as he knew he was drawing dead.

The river landed the {A-Spades} and Gold continued to shake his head in disbelief before saying good luck to the remaining players before he left the tournament area.

Sleeping on the Couch

Nível 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Laura Green, Scott Born
Laura Green, Scott Born

With the ESPN film crew storming over to a table, we decided to follow suit to see what the commotion was about.

One player had moved all in and Laura Green had made the call before her husband Scott Born called all in from the blinds.

Green: {7-}{7-}
Born: {Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}

WIth Green having the best hand, she would eventually run last on the {6-Spades}{3-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{A-Hearts} board as her husband Born spike a runner-runner Broadway straight to stay alive with just a little above starting stack.

Green however maybe sending her Mr to the couch tonight as she took a hit to drop to 42,000 in chips.
