Rybin, Watson Lead International Field to End Day 2

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Alexey Rybin
Alexey Rybin

As the exciting first Day 1 flight of the Main Event played out down the hall here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, the action was similarly intense in the Pavilion Room for Day 2 of Event #61: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha. From a starting field of 386 there were 168 players back in action to start today's play, and after 10 more levels of PLO just 32 remain with Alexey Rybin of Russia leading all with a stack of 977,000.

Rybin grabbed the lead early on Day 2 and kept it for most of the afternoon and evening, only losing it briefly to Mike Watson of Canada near night's end before claiming it back. Watson ended the day with 773,000 in second position, with Johannes Strassman (Germany), Nadar Kakhmazov (Russia), and Nicolas Faure (France) not far behind.

The American Daniel Alaei and Canadian Jonathan Duhamel also will be returning to big stacks tomorrow, as will the Ukraine's Oleksii Kovalchuk who is going for his third bracelet in three years. Alex Kravchenko, Tom Marchese, Nacho Barbero, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Stephen Chidwick, Tony Cousineau, Jared Bleznick, and Joseph Cheong will also be back to help round out a star-studded field of remaining players.

The afternoon and early evening saw the field race down to the money bubble with start-of-day-2 chip leader Matt O'Donnell and NBA star Paul Pierce among those falling prior to dinner and not too far from the cash. Once just 46 remained, super short stack Jamie Pickering helped add an extra half-hour to the day by nursing his last chips for an extra orbit's worth of hand-for-hand play only to stone bubble the event.

From there Peter Jetten (44th), Scott Seiver (42nd), and Marcel Luske (41st) were among the min-cashers, with Matt Giannetti being the last elimination of the night in 33rd place.

As suggested above, the remaining field is truly indicative of poker's global reach, with players from Russia, Canada, Germany, France, Ukraine, Argentina, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Latvia, the United Kingdom, and the United States still remaining.

Play resumes tomorrow at 2 p.m. — that's Pacific time for all of those following from around the world. Come back then to follow all of the action as we discover who among these 32 will be winning the last preliminary bracelet of the 2013 WSOP.

Duhamel More-Than-Doubles

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

Following a Jonathan Duhamel open from middle position and a call from Jared Bleznick on the button, Mike Watson reraised to 85,000 from the blinds and both Duhamel and Bleznick called.

The flop came {2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{J-Spades}, and Watson promptly set out two small stacks of green (25,000) chips to signify a bet of 200,000. Duhamel thought a moment, then bet all in for 202,000, and Bleznick folded. Watson called the extra couple of orange (1,000) chips, and the players showed their cards.

Duhamel: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Watson: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

Duhamel was calling for a flush, and while the {10-Spades} turn didn't deliver it the {4-Clubs} river did, and Duhamel earned a big more-than-double-up as they near the end of play for the night.

Nguyen, Hebden, and Roberts Exit

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

When we reached Table 94, Khiem Nguyen was all in and at risk with {a-}{j-}{10-}{6-} on a flop of {3-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. Nicolas Faure had him at risk with {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, and Nguyen improved to a better two pair when the {a-Diamonds} turned. Unfortunately for the German, the {8-Hearts} completed the board to give Faure a flush, and he was eliminated.

On other tabled, Elliott Hebden and Brian Roberts were eliminated with unknown action.

Big One for Barbero

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

We came on a big three-way hand involving Nacho Barbero (small blind), Alexey Rybin (middle position), and Tom Marchese (hijack seat) just now. They'd reached the turn, with a number of chips in the middle, the board showing {3-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}, and it appearing as though the action had checked to Marchese who'd bet 42,000.

Barbero then had committed his entire stack of about 160,000 as a raise, then Rybin had repotted it and Marchese was in the tank trying to decide whether or not to commit his last 160,000 or so. Finally Marchese folded, and the other two tabled their cards.

Barbero: {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Rybin: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

The river then brought the {7-Hearts}, making a flush for Barbero and earning him continued life in Event #61.

Bleznick Jams the Turn

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

After being forced to fold to a river shove, Jared Bleznick raised to 16,000 from early position. Mike Watson called on his direct left, Jonathan Duhamel defended his big blind, and the flop fell {3-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Duhamel checked, Bleznick continued for 36,000, and both Watson and Duhamel called. The turn was the {7-Hearts}, Duhamel checked again, and Bleznick moved all in for what looked like 175,000. Watson quickly folded, and Duhamel tank-folded as well.

Kravchenko Busts Andersson

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

When we reached Table 94, Fredrik Andersson was all in and at risk for his last few thousand on a flop of {k-Hearts}{2-Spades}{a-Hearts}. His opponent, Alex Kravchenko, called.

Andersson: {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Kravchenko: {k-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts}

Anderson was drawing very slim, but the {9-Spades} on the turn was one of the few cards in the deck that kept him alive. He needed to make two pair or trips on the river while avoiding a hear, but he was unable to when the {3-Hearts} completed the board. Andersson was eliminated in 39th place, while Kravchenko now has 260,000 chips.
