One of the great things about the UKIPT Isle of Man is that staff from the Rational Group, parent company of PokerStars, get the chance to play against some of the big stars of poker and they don’t come much bigger than Team Online Pro Ike Haxton.
Martin Stuart is one of those staff members playing today and he must have wondered if it was a joy or a curse when he found himself facing off against Haxton in a pot. There was a decent chunk of change in the middle already and the board read . Stuart led out for 7,400 from the big blind and after a short think Haxton pushed out his big chips, enough to cover Stuart’s remaining stack.
Stuart looked unsure what to do. A look over his shoulder at the tournament clock seemed to make up his mind and with a shrug he made the call. Haxton turned over and when he saw the of Sturat he said, “I’m in bad shape against that one.” The on the river doubled up Stuart and put a severe dent in Haxton’s chance of progression.
A short while ago Jake Cody was involved in a three-way all in and at risk with . He was up against another and . The river delivered the required to save him and grant a near double up. Not long after there was an early position opened, a flat call from the button and Cody shoved for 18,300. The original raiser folded but the button called.
Cody showed and it was his turn to race a pair against his opponent’s . The board ran out and Cody spiked his set on the turn to give him a fighting chance again.
Chris Moneymaker, the man, the myth, the legend, is out of UKIPT Isle of Man. He was all in on the turn of an board with but he ran into the nut flush of Matthew Davenport - who held . Moneymaker couldn't make a house on the river and busted out as result, wishing everyone good luck.
Jake Cody has not been flipping well, first he lost credit card roulette for dinner with Martins Adeniya, Ben Jenkins, Jon Spinks and Max Silver. Now he just lost a 15,000 flip with doubling up Christopher Corkhill's after the board came .
David K Lappin wasn’t in the best of moods this morning. Having narrowly failed to make it through to the end of Day 1a he was back for another go today when it sounded as he would rather have been sleeping in and playing chess. He certainly seems to be in a better mood now though as he has a 68,000 stack in front of him.
As we approached the table he was dragging a decent pot and explaining to a blonde Swedish player, Linda Willix, why he had played the hand as he had and how it might have played out differently if she had moved all in. The look on her face though was less enraptured pupil and more disgusted teacher. Still, the Lappin charm can’t work on everyone and he seemed happy enough.
Victoria Coren Mitchell wasn’t at her seat at the table after play had resumed and, as she had been getting a bit short on chips and there was a healthy stack where she had been sitting, we inquired of Fintan Gavin if that was indeed her stack.
Gavin confirmed it was and told us an imprecise story of Coren Mitchell tripling up with versus and and then eliminating another player a short while later again with .
Eugene Katchalov found a nice hand and was all in with . We just caught the end of the action as the dealer was sweeping up the cards and a king had hit the board.
Unfortunately for the Team PokerStars Pro his opponent had in front of him and Katchalov was gone, unable to do any damage today with his second bullet.
