Timofey Kuznetsov Leads 35 Survivors After Day 1 of the 2016 Super High Roller Bowl

A group of 49 of the wealthiest and best poker players on the planet descended upon the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon for the opening day of the 2016 Super High Roller Bowl.

The $300,000 negative-rake event, featuring a $15,000,000 prize pool, kicked off just after 1 p.m. local time and it didn't take long before the first player fell.

Jason Mercier took a huge chunk out of Antonio Esfandiari's stack in the early part of the first level, and by the end of it, Esfandiari ran queens into 2015 Super High Roller Bowl champ Brian Rast's big slick. Rast spiked a king on the river, and before the first 75 minutes were up, Esfandiari was out.

Igor Kurganov was the next to go, calling off with top pair against a Dan Smith boat in Level 2, and before long, Isaac Haxton, Christoph Vogelsang, David Einhorn, Brandon Steven, and 2015 Super High Roller Bowl runner-up Scott Seiver joined them on the rail.

Others who busted in the latter half of the seven-level day included 2016 PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker $10,000 Main Event champion Talal Shakerchi, sports-betting sharp Haralabos Voulgaris, businessman John Morgan, and high roller regs Connor Drinan, Jason Les, and Sam Soverel.

Twitter beef foes Mercier and Doug Polk spent most of the day seated right beside one another, with Mercier building a big stack and Polk heading into the last level short. Eventually, Mercier was moved, and Polk joined the group on the outside looking in soon after.

2014 Big One For One Drop winner Daniel Colman, and that particular event's runner up, the one and only Daniel Negreanu, also had solid days, booking spots among the bigger stacks.

But this day truly belonged Russian Timofey "Trueteller" Kuznetsov, who finished fourth in this event last year, and is just two days removed from a $748,446 win in a $50,000 Super High Roller here at ARIA.

Kuznetsov bagged 1,129,500 and will lead the 35 players remaining when Day 2 kicks off just after 1 p.m. on Monday, with plans to play seven more levels.

Of course, the PokerNews Live Reporting team will be back at that time to provide live updates from start to finish and you are welcome to follow it all, right here in this space.

Jason Les - Eliminated
Jason Les - Eliminated

Following a flop of {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, Jason Les checked from the small blind and Phil Hellmuth checked from the big blind. Dan Perper bet 15,000 from middle position, Les check-called, Hellmuth check-raised to 60,000, Perper reraised all in for 176,000, Les reraised all in for 184,000, and Hellmuth tanked for a bit before he called.

Les: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Hellmuth: {9-Spades}{7-Hearts}
Perper: {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Perper led with a queen-high straight and held up through the {4-Diamonds} turn and {6-Hearts} river to triple up. In a small side spot, Les was eliminated by Hellmuth.

Holz Guesses Queens

Nível 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

From the cutoff seat, Fedor Holz raised to 10,000. Bill Perkins was on the button and reraised to 25,000. Play folded back to Holz, he called, and the dealer dealt the {K-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Both players checked, and the turn was the {7-Clubs}. Holz checked, Perkins bet 25,000, and Holz folded.

"Queens?" asked Holz.

"Damn!" responded Perkins right away. "You're good!"

Lehne Doubles

Nível 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Dan Smith made it 10,000 to go, and when it folded to Kathy Lehne in the big blind, she bumped it to 35,000.

Smith pushed in, having Lenhe well covered, and she called off for her tournament life with the {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Smith had the {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}, and remained behind on a {k-Spades}{2-Spades}{8-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} run out to hand Lenhe the double up.

The "Poker Brat" Coming Out

Nível 6 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth is in peak "Poker Brat" form right now. He was recently seen verbally addressing Timofey Kuznetsov about the aggression Kuznetsov has been applying, with Hellmuth.

"You look young," Hellmuth said. "Like you're looking to make a name for yourself."

The table got a good laugh out of that, but Hellmuth didn't stop with the comments there. He continued with Kuznetsov for a bit before he turned his focus to a hand against Tom Marchese.

On the {J-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop, Hellmuth checked to Marchese, who bet 7,000. Hellmuth called, and the turn was the {A-Hearts}. Both players checked, and the river was the {K-Spades}. Hellmuth checked, Marchese bet 21,000, and Hellmuth folded.

"Show me if you bluffed me," Hellmuth said to Marchese.

Marchese chuckled, but didn't show.

"I should've raised you on the flop," Hellmuth said. "But I figured you'd take another whack at it."
