Andrei Shkerin Leads After PokerStars Championship Sochi Main Event Day 1a

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Andrei Shkerin
Andrei Shkerin

The flagship event of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Sochi kicked off today, much to the delight of 132 runners, filled with online qualifiers, poker pros, and poker enthusiasts. Day 1a of the RUB 150,000,000 guaranteed Main Event got underway at noon local time inside the beautiful Sochi Casino and Resort.

After eight 75-minute levels of play on Day 1a, just 74 players remain in the hunt. Russian player Andrei Shkerin claimed the top spot on the leaderboard after mustering a stack of 144,400. Second position belongs to Mikhail Rudoy with 141,100 while Daniyar Aubakirov (133,500), Nadar Kakhmazov (120,000), and Artsiom Zhadinsky (115,600) round out the top five spots.

Team PokerStars was well represented on Day 1a with Chris Moneymaker, Luca Pagano, and Felipe Ramos making appearances. Moneymaker was seated early in the day and the empty seat to his left was taken midway through by none other than Ramos. Ramos made a deep run in the PokerStars National High Roller but busted in 13th place for a score of RUB 243,000.

Moneymaker and Ramos certainly enjoyed their time beside each other, clashing in multiple pots and tossing out the occasional needle. Ramos even won a sizable pot that Moneymaker was involved in during Ramos’ first hand of the day. Moneymaker finished the day with 115,300, receiving a large boost towards the end of play, including Ramos’s stack on the last hand of the night.

Pagano, on the other hand, didn’t have a great day on the felt. Early on the Italian pro lost a large portion of his stack when he flopped a set of eights but was crushed by an opponent’s flopped set of kings. Pagano was able to find some spots to increase his chip count but wasn’t able to fully recover. The pothole that blew the tire off came when Pagano picked up pocket aces and even flopped a set but when his stack got into the pot, the aforementioned Shkerin had flopped a flush and it held to end Pagano’s Main Event run.

Maxim Lykov was among the notable players making a splash on Day 1a. Lykov bagged 78,700 and will be joined on Day 2 by early Day 1a chip leader Vladimir Medvedev (78,200), Dmitry Chop (76,000), Alexander Kostritsyn (49,100), and Igor Yaroshevskyy (23,800)

As is the case in most events, Day 1 is as far as many players make it. A few familiar faces to hit the rail include Kiryl Radzivonau, Igor Dubinskyy, Orpen Kisacikoglu, and the first casualty of the day, Mohammadjavad Haddadnia.

Day 1b will begin at noon local time on Friday with another eight 75-minute levels on the schedule.

PokerNews will be live on the floor throughout the festival. Stay tuned for live updates and feature stories throughout the 2017 PokerStars Championship Sochi.

Moneymaker Busts Ramos Final Hand Of the Night

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Team PokerStars Pros Chris Moneymaker and Felipe Ramos had sat next to each other for nearly the whole day. Ramos had the bigger stack and position making it a tough day for Moneymaker but he had the final word.

With the rest of the tables bagging up their chips Ramos and his friend would clash one more time. The last level had not been kind to the Brazilian Pro and he got the last of his chips in the middle holding Ace-Jack on an Jack high flop.

Moneymaker had flopped a set of nines however to propel his stack north of 100,000 for the first time in the tournament as the turn and river bricked out.

Moneymaker will be back for Day 2 with a very playable stack while Ramos will have to look towards the High Roller events where he has already had success this week. He grinned and shook hands with Moneymaker as he bagged up the remainder of his stack.

Banter; Bluffs and a Big Pot on Table 1

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Dmitry Yurasov Loses Big Pot in Last Level
Dmitry Yurasov Loses Big Pot in Last Level

Hand 1

On the flop of {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, Vadim Botosan bet 3,200 and was called by Natan Chauskin before the {6-Hearts} turn saw a bet of 7,000 by Botosan. Chauskin moved all in and Botosan reluctantly folded with 25,000 behind and mucked {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} face up. Chauskin grinned and showed his {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}.

Hand 2

Plenty of table chat and banter in Russian followed after all was done and dusted. One hand later, Mikhail Korotkikh bet the {K-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop for 5,100 and Ulrich Jungen as well as Dmitry Yurasov in the small blind folded. Korotkikh also showed a bluff, with {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, and more jokes and laughs came after.

Hand 3

Ulrich Jungen raised to 2,100 and Yurasov three-bet to 6,300 in the small blind, which Jungen called. On the {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop, Yurasov bet 4,500 and Jungen moved all in. Yurasov asked for a count and eventually called the shove for 43,500.

Dmitry Yurasov: {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}
Ulrich Jungen: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

The {K-Hearts} turn improved the Swiss, and the {2-Hearts} river bricked off to deny Yurasov a potential chip leader pot.

Aleksanyan and Yurasov Clash

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Dmitry Yurasov
Dmitry Yurasov

Gevorg Aleksanyan raised to 1,100 on the button and Dmitry Yurasov in the small blind three-bet to 3,700. Aleksanyan four-bet to 10,500 and Yurasov called, then checked the {Q-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop. Aleksanyan continued for 5,000 and was called.

The {8-Diamonds} turn went check, check, and Aleksanyan took another stab at the pot when Yurasov checked the {K-Diamonds} river. He bet 7,000 and Yurasov eventually called to see his opponent turn over {A-Spades}{3-Spades} for a bluff. Yurasov had that beat with {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and claimed the pot, their table broke right after the hand was over.

Pagano Busts Holding Aces

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Luca Pagano Eliminated
Luca Pagano Eliminated

Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano has been nursing his stack for a while now since he took a huge hit with set over set earlier in the day.

We arrived at the table just as Pagano was taking his leave.

In front of him was his {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} with the board reading {7-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{k-Spades}.

His top set was no good though as Andrei Shkerin's {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} flopped a flush and the battle was over, for now. All the chips went in on the flop.

No Rest for Ramos

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
PokerStars Team Pros Chris Moneymaker & Felipe Ramos
PokerStars Team Pros Chris Moneymaker & Felipe Ramos

Unfortunately, Brazilian PokerStars Team Pro Felipe Ramos just busted in the money of the National High Roller. Ramos banked $243,000 for 13th place.

Fortunately, he immediately registered for the PokerStars Championship Sochi Main Event just before the break and instantly found a hand to play and give himself a huge boost up the counts.

We missed the preflop action but Ramos and four tablemates including Pokerstars teammate Chirs Moneymaker — who is sitting to Ramos' immediate right — paid 700 to see a {10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{j-Clubs} flop.

After it was checked all the way around to the player in late position, they fired out a bet of 2,100. Action folded back around to Ramos who bumped it up to 6,900. His opponent called.

The turn was the {2-Clubs} and Ramos led with a bet of 8,500. His opponent called. The {2-Clubs} completed the board on the river and both players checked. Ramos tabled {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}, besting his opponent's {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

A big smile crossed Ramos' face as he knew he got lucky on the river and Moneymaker was sure to let him know, tossing out a few needles about Ramos binking his first hand.

Pagano Takes A Huge Hit

Nível 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Luca Pagano
Luca Pagano

There was an open to 700 and a call before Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano also called from the button. With a fold from the small blind it was Ihar Soika from the big blind who came out with a big three-bet.

With the other two players folding it was Pagano who called to go to a heads-up flop of {k-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}.

Soika check-called a bet of 2,700 from Pagano and the turn card was the {j-Diamonds}.

Another check from the blinds from Soika saw Pagano up the price to 5,000. Soika weighed it up. He had 8,500 behind and soon after he committed all his chips and Pagano quickly called and tabled his {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} set.

The air rushed from his though when he saw Soika had flopped top set with {k-Hearts}{k-Spades} and with a blank on the river he took the majority of the Italian’s chips.

Igor Kurganov Can't Wait to Come Back to Sochi

Nível 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Igor Kurganov and Liv Boeree
Igor Kurganov and Liv Boeree

Igor Kurganov paid a flying visit to Sochi earlier this week, and it seems like he thoroughly enjoyed his time.

"It's a great venue. I love being surrounded by the mountains in a place like this. It's great during the PokerStars Championship, but I cannot wait to come back during ski season!”

Like most players, Kurganov has been playing SCOOP for the past month in the lead-up to the event here in Sochi, but not as much as the full-time online grinders.

“I played half the SCOOP days and it hasn’t gone too well for me. Fortunately, Sit & Go’s went well.

"Liv has made a few very deep runs but fell just shy of the final table a couple of times. I enjoyed the series a lot and look forward to WCOOP”

Kurganov is leaving Russia today to fly to Las Vegas in time for some of the biggest tournaments this year, as well as spending time with girlfriend Liv Boeree.

"I will play the $300k Super High Roller Bowl and the €111,111 High Roller for One Drop there.

"Afterwards Liv and I will play the team event together for REG-charity and afterwards go back to Europe before the WSOP Main Event.”

With some 5,000 in the middle and the board showing {7-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts}, Ilya Sumzin checked out of the small blind and [Removed:19] bet 3,000 from under the gun. Sumzin folded and was shown {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} by Sokolovskiy, who then added "I wish you had aces, next card six and all in."

Soon after, a big pot emerged on the very same table and Driss Ekadioin as well as Konstantin Tolokno were the players involved. On the {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Diamonds} river, Tolokno bet 6,000 and Ekadioin called. Tolokno turned over {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} for quads and Ekadioin sighed and muckewd his {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a flush.
