Welcome to Day 1a of PokerStars Championship Panama Main Event

PokerStars Championship Panama
PokerStars Championship Panama

Two months ago, Christian Harder became the first PokerStars Championship Main Event winner when he claimed the title at PokerStars Championship Bahamas to usher in a new era. Now, here at PokerStars Championship Panama, it's time to begin the process of crowning the next winner as the $5,300 Main Event is set to get underway.

Cards are set to begin flying at 11 a.m. local time here in Panama City at Sortis Hotel, Spa & Casino. Things begin modestly enough with eight levels of action, scheduled to last 75 minutes apiece. Blinds begin at 50/100 and players will get 30,000 to begin the tournament. They play through 400/800/100 before bagging up.

Unlike many tournaments nowadays, this one is a straight-up freezeout — reentry will not be allowed. Registration will be open throughout the day, stretching into the start of Thursday's Day 2.

Stay tuned for live updates throughout the day here on PokerNews to see who gets off to a good start in the race to become the next PokerStars Championship winner.

Kisacikoglu Takes an Early Hit

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

With 750 in the pot and a board read {k-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Diamonds}, the players in the small blind and under the gun both checked to Orpen Kisacikoglu, who bet 300 from the button. The player in the small blind called, the other got out of the way, and the {10-Spades} appeared on the turn.

Both players checked and then the under-the-gun player bet 750 on the {5-Spades} river. Kisacikoglu made the call but mucked when his opponent rolled over the {k-Spades}{10-Hearts} for two pair.

If you recall, Kisacikoglu finished fifth in yesterday's PokerStars Championship Panama $50,000 Super High Roller, which you can read about by clicking here.

Adrian Mateos Battles Early

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

PokerStars qualifier, Gustavo Lopes, raised to 300 on the button. Adrian Mateos was in the small blind and put in a three bet to 1,200. Lopes called.

The flop came {J-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Mateos led out for 1,200. Lopes wasted no time and raised to 3,200. Mateos quickly called.

The turn was the {8-Diamonds}. Mateos checked and Lopes opted to check back.

The river was the {7-Diamonds} and Mateos checked again. Lopes reached into his stack and fired out a bet of 5,200. Mateos thought about it for a minute and decided to fold.

Another Loss for Kisacikoglu

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

From the big blind, Orpen Kisacikoglu check-called three streets as {a-Spades}{6-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} hit the felt. His opponent, Ricardo Tavares, fired 275, 400 and then 1,000, and he turned over {a-Diamonds}{10-Spades} for aces up after Kisacikoglu called the final bet. The high roller couldn't beat that and smiled and mucked upon showdown.

UFC Hall of Famer and Friend of PokerStars Tito Ortiz in Panama for Main Event

Day 1a of the PokerStars Championship Panama Main Event is expected to draw a special player – Friend of PokerStars Tito Ortiz. If you followed mixed martial arts (MMA), and especially the UFC, then you’re familiar with Ortiz. Even if you don’t, you might recognize him from his stint on the 2008 edition Celebrity Apprentice alongside now-President Donald Trump.

The former Light Heavyweight Champion, who in 2012 became the ninth fighter inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, has a MMA record of 19 wins (eight knockouts, five submission, and six by decision) and 12 losses (four by knockout, three by submission, five by decision, and one draw).

He was a beast in the octagon, and now he’s trying to best opponents on the felt. Ortiz, who was formerly married to Jenna Jameson, is no stranger to poker though. He appeared on PokerStars Shark Cage, and in 2015 competed at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in the Bahamas.

It was there that Ortiz took a bunch of players out to the beach for an early morning workout MMA style, which you can see photos of in this piece on the PokerStars Blog.

Ortiz is in the building but has yet to take his seat, instead opting to chat up Felipe Ramos in the hallway. He should be in action soon, and you can rest assured that we’ll be keeping an eye on him to see how he fares in the 2017 PokerStars Championship Panama Main Event.

An Early Ship, Early Leader

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

November Niner Kenny Hallaert just dropped a huge early pot and is hovering around half of the starting stack.

Picking action up on a board of {8-Spades}{q-Clubs}{a-Spades}{5-Hearts}, Hallaert fired 3,800 into about a 5,500 pot from the big blind. Luke Graham called from the button, and a {7-Spades} hit the felt. Hallaert quickly placed another bet in the middle: 5,500. Graham cut out enough to call and thought things over for about a minute before sliding all of his chips in the middle in one tower. Hallaert took a deep breath and folded after about 30 seconds.
