Smith Nearly Catches Peters as Final Four Bag in the Money

The Poker Masters $100,000 Main Event has reached the money and two clear-cut favorites have distanced themselves from the other two competitors in the race for $1,150,000.

Start-of-day chip leader David Peters went just about wire-to-wire and maintained his position at the top, but fellow American Dan Smith put together an incredible late charge, increasing his stack roughly ten-fold over the course of the final 11 hands of the night. Peters finished with 2,203,000, while Smith wound up with 2,030,000.

They'll be joined on the final day of the event by Koray Aldemir (541,000) and Bryn Kenney (227,000). Amazingly, Kenney's stack barely represents an increase over the 200,000 starting stack he was given when he registered at the beginning of the day.

Ten entries at the start of the day — the tournament wrapped early on Thursday and forced a restructuring into a freezeout with registration closing as Day 2 began — pushed the total to 25 for a $2.5 million prize pool.

Kenney was joined by fellow new entries like Aldemir and Stephen Chidwick as well as players who busted on Day 1 like Smith, Jason Koon, Isaac Haxton and Brandon Adams. The latter two represented the only challengers to Ali Imsirovic, who bagged Day 1, in the race for the Poker Masters Purple Jacket, given to the player who racked up the most points over the course of the seven-event series.

Haxton would fall early and Imsirovic busted in 13th to clear the way for Adams if he could find a top-three finish.

Peters built a huge chip lead during the final two tables and toted an overwhelming 2.2 million into the final table of seven when nobody else had even 800,000. Adams snuck in as the shortest stack but soon busted when he ripped in ace-jack over an open and ran into Smith's ace-queen.

"I really wanted that purple jacket," said Adams, who made it a point to don purple for much of the week. "There seemed to be a slight window for me to sort of creep in.

"But, I never really ticked above 350,000. Never really got it going. I finished in seventh place but I was actually pretty far from getting third."

Instead Imsirovic was crowned player of the series thanks to back-to-back wins in Event #5: $25,000 No-Limit Hold'em and Event #6: $50,000 No-Limit Hold'em.

Ali Imsirovic won the purple jacket.

Adams' elimination left two players to go before the night would end and the bubble burst. Six-handed play would last over an hour, and Smith spent much of that time with the shortest stack. His amazing 11-hand heater started with pure luck as he won with ace-queen against Aldemir's kings all in preflop, running a four-card flush even with Aldemir holding a blocker.

Then, Chidwick tried running a massive bluff as he check-raised with a gutshot in a three-handed pot in which both Smith and Aldemir flopped top-top. Chidwick's cold three-bet chased away Aldemir but Smith stuck around and called off his stack against turn and river barrels to double and leave Chidwick on crumbs.

After Chidwick was finished off, Smith suddenly had about 1.4 million at 5,000/10,000/10,000 and was in second place.

Smith then picked up aces blind versus blind against Christoph Vogelsang and decimated his stack three-barreling for value when the German was unlucky to turn top pair after floating the flop. Smith took the rest of Vogelsang's chips by bluffing Peters in a dry side-pot and winning with king-high after both called Vogelsang's jam of 12 big blinds.

That elimination signaled the end of Day 2 and everyone left is guaranteed $250,000. The final four players return at noon on Saturday to determine the champion, with blinds nearly set to head to 6,000/12,000/12,000. While the winner of the purple jacket has been determined, there's still over $1 million in first-place prize money on the line, so come back to PokerNews — and tune in to the stream on PokerGO — to see who will claim that windfall.

With four players now guaranteed an in-the-money finish in the 2018 Poker Masters Event #7: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event, the race for the Purple Jacket has now been decided with Ali Imsirovic being awarded the Purple Jacket for the 2018 Poker Masters.

The four remaining players are jostling for final position on the overall leaderboard as the following points are up for grabs: 350 (1st), 245 (2nd), 175 (3rd), 140 (4th).

David Peters can move up to second overall with a win, and at least fourth overall if he min-cashes. A win for Koray Aldemir would move him into second overall regardless of any other results. For Dan Smith and Bryn Kenney, a win can see either of these two move up as high as fourth overall, while a min-cash will put either of them right in the middle of the pack.

Christoph Vogelsang Eliminated in 5th Place

Nível 13 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Christoph Volgelsang
Christoph Volgelsang

Hand #41: Christoph Vogelsang shipped all in for 128,000 on the button with {10-Hearts}{9-Spades} and Dan Smith just called in the small blind with {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. David Peters looked down at {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} in the big blind and also called to see a flop of {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}.

Both Smith and Peters whiffed on the flop and checked to the {8-Hearts} on the turn. Two more checks and the {2-Diamonds} completed the board. Smith fired out 250,000 into a dry side pot which got a quick fold from Peters. Vogelsang was unable to beat Smith's hand and was eliminated on the money bubble.

The final four players will now bag up their chips and return to the PokerGO studio tomorrow.

Hand #36: Dan Smith raised to 30,000 on the button with {2-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Stephen Chidwick stuck in his last 17,000 with {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} in the small blind. David Peters called in the big blind with {q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and the flop came {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}.

Peters checked to Smith who continued for 25,000 in the side pot. Peters called and the {7-Diamonds} landed on the turn. Peters checked and Smith checked back to see the {9-Spades} on the river. Peters led out for 40,000 with two pair and Smith let his hand go. Chidwick was eliminated after he missed his flush draw and only five players remain.

Dan Smith
Dan Smith

Hand #32: Dan Smith raised to 22,000 from the hijack holding {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and David Peters called on the button with {A-Spades}{J-Spades}.

The flop landed {3-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and Smith checked to Peters who bet out 25,000. Smith called, and when the {2-Diamonds} fell on the turn, he checked again. Peters bet out 80,000 and Smith called as the river fell the {10-Clubs}.

Smith checked for a third time, and Peters bet 100,000. Smith used his full extension of free time before moving all in for 334,000 and Peters found a fold.

Hand #33: From the button, Bryn Kenney looked down at {K-Spades}{J-Spades} and opened it up with an all in shove for 227,000. Everyone folded, and Kenney collected the pot.

Hand #34: Stephen Chidwick opened to 25,000 holding {9-Spades}{8-Spades} under the gun and Christoph Vogelsang called in the small blind with {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}.

The flop landed {6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and Vogelsang checked to Chidwick who bet 25,000. Vogelsang folded, and Chidwick collected the pot.

Hand #35: From the cutoff, Koray Aldemir raised to 22,000 with {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and Dan Smith called from the small blind with {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}. Stephen Chidwick came along from the big blind with {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs} as the flop landed {Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}.

Smith and Chidwick checked to Aldemir who bet 25,000 before Smith check-raised to 75,000. Chidwick responded with a three-bet to 175,000 total,

Aldemir folded, but Smith called as the turn fell the {6-Spades}. Smith checked, and Chidwick bet 180,000.

Smith called, and the {7-Hearts} completed the board on the river. Smith checked, and Chidwick put Smith all in for his final 316,000.

Smith called just before his time expired, and after he tabled his queens-up, Chidwick mucked.

Koray Aldemir opened for 13,000 with {9-Spades}{8-Spades} and Brandon Adams shoved in the cutoff with {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. Dan Smith picked up {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} on the button and called, and everyone else folded.

The {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{q-Clubs} flop was a brutal one for Adams as Smith hit top two. The {4-Clubs} turn gave Adams a chance to chop but the {q-Diamonds} river gave Smith a boat.

Adams went bust, locking up the Poker Masters Purple Jacket for Ali Imsirovic.

Peters took the lead when {7-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} flopped. The turn was a {5-Clubs} and the river a {3-Clubs} and Tilston slid all of his chips to his neighbor, prompting a redraw for the final table.

Aldemir: {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The dealer ran out a {A-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{7-Spades} board, and Nitsche was eliminated in 9th place from the Poker Masters Main Event.

Koray Aldemir opened for 12,000 in the cutoff and got action from Dan Smith on the button and Seth Davies in the big blind. Action checked to Smith on {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and he bet 15,000. Davies shoved for 70,000 and Aldemir quickly folded. Smith called just as quickly.

Smith: {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Davies: {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Both had draws but Smith had the best of it with the nut flush draw. The {a-Spades} turn cut down on Davies' outs as he now needed to make a straight. The {4-Spades} river didn't do it for him.
