Event #3 of the Poker Masters Set to Begin

Welcome back to the ARIA Resort & Casino, and Day 3 the inaugural Poker Masters for Event #3: $50,000 No-Limit Hold'em.

Thursday saw the completion of the first event of the Poker Masters as Nick Schulman defeated Matt Hyman heads-up to claim the $918,000 first prize and outright lead in the race for the Poker Masters Purple Jacket™. Also on Thursday, Event #2 began, and with it saw a total of 50 players create a $2,500,000 prize pool. Unfortunately, it would be Erik Seidel earning the moniker of bubble boy before Dan Shak was eliminated in 8th for $100,000 to leave the final table of seven that would return today to battle it out for the $900,000 first prize.

Leading those seven players is German Christian Christner who made a late charge into the chip lead after doubling through Tom Marchese with second set to end the day with 1,416,000 in chips. Sitting behind Christner is fellow German Fedor Holz (1,138,000) and Marchese (1,011,000) while Phil Hellmuth (702,000) and Bryn Kenney (391,000) round out the bottom few stacks. For Steffen Sontheimer (848,000) and Adrian Mateos (745,000), they are making back-to-back final tables, and will need to win Event #2 to take the lead from Schulman in the race for the Poker Masters Purple Jacket™.

For final table updates of Event #2, click here.

Today is expected to attract the same group of players that took part in Event #1 and Event #2 along with some potential new blood who were unable to take a seat yesterday, along with some people that played the first event, but not the second. And with the registration and re-entry period open for the first 9 levels (approximately 7:00 p.m. PDT), it is expected that all the final table combatants will also be making an appearance. As was the case in Event #1 and Event #2, players will begin with 125,000 in starting chips and are allowed one re-entry. Levels will last 30 minutes with a 10-minute break after every three levels with plans to play down to the final table to the end of the day.

Inspired by the Aria High Rollers, the tournament rules are designed to speed up play and are specifically catered to the regular high-stakes players, including:

  • Seven-handed tables
  • A single ante posted by the big blind
  • A 30-second shot clock, with three 60-second time extensions
  • Players may re-enter once per event through level nine (with no re-entry in the final event)
  • Headphones and sunglasses are not allowed

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be providing continuous live updates from the tournament floor once play begins at 2:00 p.m. (PDT). Our updates will coincide with the live stream, and will not include any spoilers for those watching along on PokerGO. So stay tuned right here to PokerNews.com for updates from Event #3, and all the events on the Poker Masters schedule.

Hyman Eliminated by Aldemir

Nível 1 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Zach Hyman (from Event #2)
Zach Hyman (from Event #2)

From the cutoff, Zach Hyman opened to 2,500 only to have Koray Aldemir three-bet the button to 7,000. The blinds folded, and Hyman moved all in for his last 16,500. Aldemir called, and the cards were tabled.

Hyman: {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Aldemir: {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

The flop fell {J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} and Hyman pleaded to the dealer to keep it low.

The turn saw the {3-Clubs} drop, but when the river landed the {Q-Spades} to give Aldemir the check mark, Hyman was an early casualty in today's tournament.

Doug Polk
Doug Polk

Doug Polk raised to 4,000 from early position and Zach Hyman called in the big blind. The flop came {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and Hyman check-called a bet of 4,000 from Polk.

The turn was the {a-Hearts} and Hyman checked again. Polk continued for 19,000 and Hyman called once again.

The river brought the {6-Clubs} and Hyman checked one last time. Polk jammed all-in for over 90,000 and Hyman was left with a decision for the remainder of his chips. His first time extension was about to expire and Hyman announced call.

Polk rolled over {5-Hearts}{5-Spades} for a set of fives and Hyman mucked his cards. That was Hyman's second bullet meaning he is done for the day.

Layne Flack opened with a raise under the gun only to have Stephen Chidwick three-bet the button to 12,500.

From the small blind, Jason Koon cold four-bet to 35,000 only to have Flack move all in for 193,000. Chidwick eventually opted to fold, before Koon called all in for roughly 130,000 total.

Koon: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}
Flack: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}

The board ran out {5-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts} to see a straight on the board and the pot chopped up.

Koon Eliminates the Poker Masters Event #1 Champ

Nível 7 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Nick Schulman
Nick Schulman

Nick Schulman, who won Event #1 of the Poker Masters for $918,000, got his stack of roughy 80,000 all in preflop and found himself racing against Jason Koon.

Koon: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Schulman: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Schulman was looking to hold, and he did so on the {5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop. Unfortunately for him, the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Spades} to pair Koon. The {2-Clubs} river was of no consequence and Schulman hit the rail.

Steffen Sontheimer

The action folded to Sean Winter on the button, and he moved all in for 39,500. Event #2 Champion Steffen Sontheimer moved all in from the small blind for 117,000, and with the action on Event #1 Champion Nick Schulman, he pushed all in also.

Winter: {Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Sontheimer: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}
Schulman: {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

The dealer spread a {5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{8-Spades}{10-Hearts} board to see Sontheimer flop a full house to eliminate Winter, while also doubling through Schulman to leave him with just 5,000 in chips.

Sean Winter
Sean Winter

Steffen Sontheimer raised to 12,000 from the cutoff and Sean Winter three-bet to 110,000 from the button, leaving himself a single light blue T500 chip behind. Action folded back to Sontheimer and he called.

When the flop came down {8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, Sontheimer bet 500 and Winter called off.

Winter: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}
Sontheimer: {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}

Neither the {3-Diamonds} turn nor {2-Clubs} river helped Winter and he hit the rail.

"Phil, you go broke there?" Winter asked Hellmuth.

"No, but I might have taken a flop," the Poker Brat responded.
