The partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Dusk Till Dawn festival promised to be a huge event with three events guaranteeing seven-figure prize pools. The home of poker in the United Kingdom delivered in style. A total of £6,000,000 guaranteed before the first card was dealt in Nottingham, and the £5,300 Main Event broke that number with over 6,500 players taking part through the various stages to create a massive prize pool of £6,017,395.

After several online and live starting days and three following tournament days, the field was reduced to the last eight hopefuls. The final table was set with an incredible combination of stories. There were two women left in contention, one of which qualified twice through partypoker for a combined £131. One of the biggest names in UK poker took his seat and there was the story of the duel for an extra payday of £100,000 as part of a special Golden Chip last longer competition with a special twist.

It would take fewer than 5 hours to set up the heads-up duel for the title and seven-figure score. Jacob Mulhern faced Maria Lampropulos in a 79 versus 77 big blind deep battle. By then, Mulhern had already locked up the last longer competition and was on cloud nine thanks to the support of a massive rail. The 24-year-old from Doncaster quickly pulled away and put tremendous pressure on Lampropulos before the duel ended with a bang after just 40 minutes. Lampropulos shoved with kings and Mulhern called with ace-queen. The board came no higher than a nine and the rail exploded.

Overwhelmed With Emotions

Mulhern not only took home £650,000 for his second-place finish but added another £100,000 for being the last man standing from all Caribbean Poker Party players that bagged up chips in Punta Cana last November. "I'm chuffed. Maybe I could have folded at the end, but I'd struggle to fold ace-queen heads-up. I didn't think she'd shove for that many big blinds with kings, to be honest. But it all spun from $22 online in a tournament. I can't believe it. It feels unbelievable."

Mulhern then added "My life has changed. It's a massive amount of money for anybody to win, but for a lad like me of 24, it's huge! It means a lot to my family. Yesterday my phone was vibrating all day, they took it off me. It's gone so fast. People talk about getting tired playing poker. I've not felt tired once. It kept me going all day. I've loved it from start to finish."

For five months, Mulhern continued to work and dream of his moment. Today, it came.

"Every time we talked about it with my mates, I've been saying '£1.1 million soon' and they'd laugh, but heads-up I was looking at them all thinking 'there's a chance here'. I'm not disappointed at all, I thought I gave a really good account of myself."

In the interview after all was done and dusted, Lampropulos was overwhelmed with emotions. “It really feels like a magic moment I’m in right now. I’m a little tired after such a difficult final table, but tomorrow I’ll realize what I did. He didn’t want to make a deal. He was convinced that he could win. Perhaps because I am a woman and he didn’t want to deal with a woman, but I trusted in my game, I just thought ‘let’s play’.

Coming into the final table, there was one man who Maria was not looking forward to taking on so much.

“The hardest opponent was Stevie [Chidwick] - he’s a huge player. I have no words because he’s better than so many players, I was afraid of him.”

Lampropulos had the support of her friends on the rail and was cheered home by her poker-playing boyfriend Ivan Luca. It’s clear how much the two rely on each and celebrate as equals in moments like the one we’ve just seen.

“It’s important to have his support. I learned all that I know from Ivan and we play so much together. I’m next to him every day and I learned a lot. I can never be better than him but I’m happy.”

Outside Super High Roller results, Maria Lampropulos has just made history by winning £1,000,000 – an incredible achievement cheered by the female players in the Ladies Event. “I am proud of that obviously. It’s wonderful. Every woman here supported me. When everyone chanted, I felt so emotional. They were all cheering and smiling because they feel ‘OK, I can do it too.’”

Day 5 Action

The day started with 8 hopefuls remaining and short stack Stephen Chidwick turned two pair and doubled through Mateusz Rypulak's top pair. It was then Neel Murthy who became the first casualty on the final table. Murthy picked the wrong timing to three-bet seven-five off suit out of the blinds, bet a ten-high flop and jam as blank on the turn only to see Maria Lampropulos look him up with pocket kings to leave Murthy drawing dead.

The second woman on the final table, Katie Swift, saw her hopes destroyed losing two big hands in quick succession. First Stephen Chidwick doubled through her with ace-jack versus ace-king when a jack on turn and river gave Chidwick a full house. Then, Swift moved all in with pocket tens and was unfortunate enough to have Jeremy Pantin wake up with pocket queens in the small blind.

Stephen Chidwick himself would bow out just a few minutes later. After a raise by Jeremy Pantin, he got it in with ace-queen and Mateusz Rypulak looked down at pocket kings in the big blind. Rypulak, who was the other player in the last longer competition, reshoved to isolate successfully and a ten-high board sent the most-rounded finalist to the rail in 6th place for £150,000.

Down to the last five players, Jon Spinks was the shortest stack and wouldn't find an opportunity to chip up. His elimination came in brutal fashion, as Spinks jammed over the top of a raise by Maria Lampropulos and a call by Jeremy Pantin. While Lampropulos folded, Pantin called with ace-seven off suit and cracked the pocket kings of Spinks thanks to an ace in the window.

Mateusz Rypulak, who started the final day with the chip lead, saw his stack plummet. He defended the big blind with seven-eight suited. On a three-way ten-high flop, Rypulak check-jammed with second pair and Maria Lampropulos called with queen-ten suited for top pair. Another ten on the turn left Rypulak drawing dead and the rail of Jacob Mulhern went wild as the last longer competition was decided.

With three players remaining, the stacks were very similar, before Jeremy Pantin lost a lot of chips with two pair on the river against the straight of Jacob Mulhern. Pantin later ran a big bluff against Maria Lampropulos that would reduce his stack to zero. Lampropulos limp-called the raise of Pantin out of the small blind with ace-three and check-called with bottom pair on the flop and two pair on the turn. A deuce on the river delivered a four-card straight and Pantin went for it with king-jack only. Lampropulos called after long consideration and the tournament was heads-up.

The duel for the seven-figure score and trophy was very intense and Maria Lampropulos fell back rather quickly, as Jacob Mulhern tried to push her around. Two bluff-catchers in a row with ace-high and second pair, however, gave Lampropulos a 2-1 lead and it was over three hands later. Mulhern three-bet with ace-queen and called the four-bet shove to run out dry against Lampropulos' pocket kings.

While the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS at Dusk Till Dawn has come to an end, poker enthusiasts can look forward to plenty of events coming up from the partypokerLIVE team. The Grand Prix Canada runs from April 25 – May 1 and at the same time the Grand Prix Dublin (April 28 to May 1) and the Grand Prix Germany at the King's Casino in Rozvadov (April 27 to May 1). The next chance to become a millionaire then awaits in the partypokerLIVE MILLION North America at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal (May 5-10, with CAD$5m guaranteed) in less than two weeks time. An online Day 1 at partypoker for that event runs tonight, with live reporting on PokerNews.com starting shortly.

Maria Lampropulos limped in with the {J-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and Jacob Mulhern raised with the {A-Clubs}{4-Spades} to claim the pot preflop. The next hand brought no action before the fireworks then started.

Mulhern faced a raise to 20M by Lampropulos and three-bet to 50M. Lampropulos four-bet all in. Mulhern had some 40 big blinds left and called it off to set up the showdown for the title.

Jacob Mulhern: {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Spades} and Mulhern failed to improve to settle for second place and a payday of £650,000. Ivan Luca was the first to congratulate his girlfriend, and as soon as the participants of the Ladies Event heard the good news, a loud cheer broke out in the background. Mulhern's rail pushed back to create a fantastic atmosphere and worthy end for a record-breaking festival.

Mulhern did just that, but he bows out in second place. Our winner is the amazing Maria Lampropulos.

A shove for 135M with the {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs} went through uncalled for Jeremy Pantin and Pantin then raised to 17M with the {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts} the next hand. Maria Lampropulos called in the big blind with {K-Clubs}{8-Spades}.

On the {Q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop, Lampropulos checked and then folded to a bet worth 15M.

The next hand, Lampropulos asked for a count of Pantin and then limped in. Pantin raised to 28M and Lampropulos gave it plenty of thought before making the call.

The flop fell {Q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Lampropulos checked, Pantin bet 22M to pick up a call by Lampropulos. After the {A-Clubs} turn, both players checked and the {2-Spades} river completed the board. Lampropulos bet 35M and Pantin then checked his cards again before moving all in for 117.3M. Lampropulos eventually asked for a count and then called.

Pantin was gutted and rolled over his {K-Spades}{J-Hearts} for king-high only, and Lampropulos called with {A-Hearts}{3-Spades} for two pair to eliminate Pantin in 3rd place for £450,000.

There will now be a longer break of at least half an hour to set up the heads-up duel with almost even stacks.

Jacob Mulhern raised to 16M with the {A-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Maria Lampropulos called with the {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} on the button, Mateusz Rypulak defended the big blind with {8-Spades}{7-Spades}. On the {10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop, the action checked to Lampropulos and her bet was for 26M.

Rypulak gave it some consideration and then check-raised all in for 124M with second pair. Mulhern folded and Lampropulos asked for the count before making the call.

"Come on Jacob," the rail said, knowing that Rypulak was the only player that stood between Mulhern and an extra payday of £100,000 for their favorite.

The {10-Spades} on the turn left Rypulak drawing dead, making the {5-Diamonds} river a formality. Rypulak had to settle for a payday of £320,000 while the final trio has £450,000 guaranteed.

Spinks Reflects on the MILLIONS Main Event

Nível 55 : 3,000,000/6,000,000, 600,000 ante
Jon Spinks busts the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Main Event
Jon Spinks busts the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Main Event

Jon Spinks cast the figure of a man not knowing whether to laugh or cry when we caught up with him after his kings were toppled by a call from Jeremy Pantin with ace-high. We spoke to Spinks about his tournament and return to live poker.

"The way the bust-outs happened, I had no hands at all. I was always squeezing fairly wide in that spot because I'd found out that Maria [Lampropoulou] was opening way too wide from the button. It was always a really good squeeze spot but I couldn't believe it when I actually looked down and had it."

Jon was all-in with pocket kings and Jeremy Pantin called with Ace-seven off-suit to eliminate him after an ace hit the flop.

"He literally call within a minute. Both his pre-flop call and then his call on mine are not very good, what can you do?"

Two cards from being out of the tournament on Day 3, Spinks caught running cards to split a pot with Broadway. His chances have been singing ever since until the last hand. He's perfectly happy with his result, however.

"I'm absolutely fine; I can't believe whats happened. I don't play tournaments any more, and this happens. I don't mind playing, but I have other commitments these days, it's a lot of travel and hard work - i'm exhausted. It was an amazing week, you dream of this kind of stuff. I've been waiting ten years for this kind of result. I've never final tabled a major tournament like this. I've made two WSOP finals, but one was really small and the other one came a week after it, so I didn't appreciate it The final tables on both occasions were on the same day as when we played down to it, so it didn't feel quite the same in terms of prestige. When the next day is the final table, it feels a bit more real."

Now he's been at the first, can Spinks see the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS becoming a fixture on the European poker circuit?

"To make the [£6 million] guarantee was an amazing achievement. To do it a second time would take a lot. Its been an amazing success, is it sustainable? We'll have to wait and see. You certainly can't complain about the event. People generally go with it if it's a good tournament. This has probably been the best one ever in the UK and its just before other tournaments so i t makes sense that everyone was over for it. They timed it perfectly - it's weird seeing this many big names coming over for an event in the UK!"

Jon Spinks departs without the win he and his vociferous rail desperately wanted. But after a tremendous performance throughout the week, maybe we've seen the relaunch of a live circuit player who always gives as much entertainment at the table as anyone in Britain.

Jon Spinks
Jon Spinks

Jon Spinks found {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} in first position and made it 12M to go, but didn't get any action whatsoever. He did in the next hand, however, as Maria Lampropulos raised to 14M from the button with {Q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, Jeremy Pantin made the call with {A-Hearts}{7-Spades} out of the small blind before Spinks peeked down into another monster; this time {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}.

Lampropulos quickly folded, but Pantin made the call to put Spinks at risk. Spinks was more at risk than ever as the flop came {A-Spades}{8-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, and with no Kings in sight on the {2-Spades} turn and the {5-Hearts} river, a disappointed Spinks shook hands with his competitors and headed for the rail.

With that, the remaining four players have locked up £320,000 each.

Jeremy Pantin made it 11M to go with {3-Diamonds}{3-Spades} from the cutoff and Stephen Chidwick wasted no time moving in for 146,500,000 out of the small blind with {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. Mateusz Rypulak in the big blind looked down and found the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}, and after a mandatory think, he shoved over the top for 192,300,000.

Pantin wanted nothing to do with it and made the fold, and it was heads up for the massive pot.

The flop {5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} was safe for Rypulak, so was the {6-Clubs} turn and {6-Diamonds} river, and Rypulak raked in the pot while Chidwick headed for the rail.

With that run-out, the most decorated player of the final table is eliminated in 6th place, while the 23-year-old Rypulak has taken back the chiplead in the hunt for the £1 million first prize.

Katie Swift Eliminated in 7th Place (£100,000)

Katie Swift - so near and yet so far.

Katie Swift moved all in for 37.9 million chips from early position and the action folded to Maria Lampropulos on the button. Her cards were not showing and she gave it plenty of consideration, then folded.

Jeremy Pantin then moved all-in from the small blind and Jon Spinks let it go in the big blind.

Katie Swift: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Jeremy Pantin: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs} and Swift had been eliminated in 7th place for £100,000, while all remaining six players locked up £150,000 minimum.

Katie Swift's exit from the final table sees Maria Lampropulos as the last remaining female player, but Swift herself is proud of her efforts despite falling short in her bid to become MILLIONS Main Event champion.

"It was the hand before that was the pivotal hand. After losing that I was down, but still had 100 million chips and that's enough to recover. Then came the hand against Stephen."

Katie Swift's ace-king lost to Chidwick's ace-jack after being all-in pre-flop and it was obviously painful for the Kent based mum-of-one.

"It was tough, especially when my son's called Jack, and he's nine. It came nine-nine, jack jack! It is what it is; Stephen's not doing anything different there, he was short stacked. It plays itself, I've had times where I've done that to others, so it's fine. I can't moan about that. I had aces against a set of sevens and found a flush, so coming 7th in this tournament out of 7,000 isn't a failure."

Now she's gone, Katie can see another lady winning the title.

"Everyone on this final table is going for it now. Stephen could maybe have dominated, but I' hoping Maria will go for it, she's a lovely girl. They've all done well wherever they finish."

After claiming the pot against Katie Swift without showdown, Neel Murthy was in the big blind and faced a raise to 11M by Maria Lampropulos with {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} and three-bet to 31M with the {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. Lampropulos called and the flop fell {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts} to see Murthy continue for 22M, which Lampropulos called.

After the {4-Clubs} turn, Murthy counted his stack carefully before then moving all in for 83.5M. Lampropulos called and Murthy immediately left his chair, knewing he had no chance to win the pot. The American was drawing dead while the meaningless {A-Clubs} river completed the board, and Murthy takes home £72,395.

All remaining seven players have at least £100,000 locked up.

A Swift Chat

Katie Swift in the zone on Day 4. She is seven players from £1million.
Katie Swift in the zone on Day 4. She is seven players from £1million.

Much of the interest before the partypokerLIVE MILLIONS Main Event final has been in both ladies who have reached the final eight. One of the women with the million pound top prize in their sights is 34-year-old Katie Swift. The mother of one also runs a cafe business on the coast down in Kent and her family is right here on the rail supporting her.

"I don't really feel nervous, it's quite strange," she told us. "I only really felt it when I saw my Mum and Dad were here, along with my husband. Other than that moment though, I feel quite detached."

Swift has got to know most of her table opponents, and has armed herself with information.

"The way I see it, it's like having a toolbox and over the week I've been filling it up. I have the call, raise, check-raise, and I just need to know when to put each tool to use against each opponent. I've not been on the feature table until now, so while I've seen some of the players play, they haven't seen me. It's all situational, though, so we'll just have to see how it goes."

The cafe business is being run in her absence - no one is waiting on a bacon sandwich on the South coast - but Katie admits the paperwork is stacking up just like her chips have been in this record-breaking event.

"I do all the accounts, the paperwork, everything like that, so it's been left to pile up a bit this week, but I've been blown away by the messages of support I've received. Everyone has been so lovely, and honestly that's affected me far more than the poker itself. I'm really looking forward to it."

Katie Swift has been in the zone for four days and looks the same right now with the final about to start. Focused, of course, but also an odd blend of being a little detached from the room and zoned into doing everything she can to take down the trophy. It would be the second trophy her family have won this week.

"Our little boy won his cup final and I couldn't be more proud. Two trophies for the family this weekend would be great."

Swift's rail is by far the most vocal and everyone behind her on the rail seems as nice as Katie herself. There's no doubt that she would be a very popular winner both in the room and across the UK live poker circuit.
