Kayhan Mokri Leads 210 Players as Bubble Bursts on Day 2 of €5,300 EPT Main Event

Nível 16 : Blinds 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Kayhan Mokri

It was another action-packed day at the 2022 PokerStars and Barcelona©Casino European Poker Tour as the field on Day 2 of the €5,300 EPT Main Event was whittled down to only 210 remaining contenders by the end of the night.

The record-breaking EPT Main Event starting field of 2,294 players created a €11,125,900 prize pool, and the eventual winner will receive €1,714,000, while the runner-up will also take home a seven-figure payout of €1,027,470.

Kayhan Mokri leads the remaining 210 players by a good margin, finishing the day with a solid stack of 1,303,000 chips, good for 217 big blinds when play resumes.

Brazil’s Marcelo Simoes (1,068,000) recently won the EPT Main Event in Monte Carlo for €939,840, and he was the only other player to bag over a million chips today. He was seen winning a huge pot with boat over boat near the end of the day as he attempts to continue what would be a highly-improbable run in the culmination of another EPT Main Event victory.

In the penultimate level of the day, the bubble burst to send all of the remaining players into the money. The payouts were planned to pay the top 327 finishers, but Emmanuel Rouvet, Daan Mulders, and Oliver Bosch were all eliminated on the money bubble, and the trio split the 326th and 327th place prizes to receive €5,907 each.

Those who found themselves without any chips at the end of the day include PokerStars Ambassadors Alejandro Lococo, Sam Grafton, Jen Shahade, Ramon Colillas, and Andre Akkari. Among others who fell were Adrian Mateos, Erik Seidel, Maria Ho, Patrik Antonius, Mikita Badziakouski, Benny Glaser, Kitty Kuo, Sam Greenwood, Sergio Aido, Jason Wheeler, Sofia Lovgren, Uri Reichenstein, Francisco Benitez, and John Juanda.

The action is slated to resume at 12 p.m. noon on Thursday, August 18. When players return, they will resume play in Level 17 with blinds at 3,000/6,000 with a 6,000 big blind ante.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews team continues to provide updates until a winner is crowned, along with coverage of other events from the coast of Catalonia at Casino Barcelona.

Simoes Breaks a Million with Boat Over Boat Cooler

Marcelo Simoes

With roughly 420,000 chips in the pot on a {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{10-Spades} completed board, Marcelo Simoes was in the big blind with chips over the betting line. Cameron Robertson was on the button and put Simoes all in, and Simoes quickly called as he jumped up and clapped in celebration before he turned over {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for a flopped boat, while Robertson held {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} for an inferior flopped boat.

Cameras swooped in to record the Brazilian stacking up all of his new chips, which took him several minutes to stack as he moved over the 1 million chip mark.

Simoes recently won the EPT Main Event in Monte Carlo for €939,840, and he hopes this could help propel him to another improbable run.

With roughly 140,000 in the pot on a completed board of {3-Spades}{7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, Laurence Stein jammed his final 70,000 into the middle from the small blind and was snap-called by Andre Moreira Marques in late position.

Adams Makes Royal Flush to Double

Nível 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Timothy Adams
Timothy Adams

Timothy Adams had gotten his stack of 184,000 in from the cutoff and was at risk against Alexandre Garcia Vargas in the big blind.

Timothy Adams: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Alexandre Garcia Vargas: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

It was a classic flip, and the {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop gave Adams additional outs with a flush draw. The {q-Hearts} turn was an interesting one and the table reacted accordingly, as Adams vaulted ahead but needed to avoid the board pairing. The dealer burned and turned, and put the {j-Hearts} onto the felt to complete the board, giving Adams a royal flush to stay alive in grand fashion.

Brandstrom Drills a Draw to Survive

Nível 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Simon Brandstrom
Simon Brandstrom

After Simon Brandstrom raised to 8,000 in middle position, Peter Jaksland three-bet to 21,000 from the cutoff.

Brandstrom called, leaving himself less than 100,000 behind for the {7-Spades}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop.

He checked to Jaksland, who bet 26,000. Brandstrom then gave his next move approximately two minutes of thought before moving all in. Jaksland snap-called to put the defending champion at risk.

Simon Brandstrom: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Peter Jaksland: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Brandstrom needed help as he only had a double gutshot straight draw to work with, as his king wouldn't help against Jaksland's aces.

The turn brought the {6-Clubs} giving no help to Brandstrom, but the {q-Spades} on the river gave Brandstrom a king-high straight to survive and keep his reign as champion alive.

Bubble Bursts; Rouvet, Mulders, and Bosch Split the Money

Nível 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

During the hand-for-hand phase, three players bowed out at the same time. In the first hand, Felipe Ketzer raised to 9,000 from the hijack and Emmanuel Rouvet three-bet jammed from the small blind for 87,000. Action folded back to Ketzer who made the call.

Emmanuel Rouvet: {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Felipe Ketzer: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The board ran out {q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Hearts} and Ketzer won the pot, ending Rouvet's tournament life on the bubble.

Emmanuel Rouvet

In the second hand, after Ramiro Petrone raised to 10,000 in early position, Daan Mulders three-bet to 27,000 on the button.

Petrone then moved all-in, and Mulders called off for 125,000.

Daan Mulders: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Ramiro Petrone: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Mulders had run into the ultimate preflop cooler on the bubble. The dealer spread a flop of {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, giving Petrone top set, but Mulders now had a gutshot straight draw.

The turn {6-Spades} and river {q-Clubs} couldn't save Mulders however, and he was also eliminated on the bubble.

Daan Mulders

In another hand, with roughly 100,000 in the pot on a {q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Spades}{7-Spades}{3-Diamonds} completed board, Oliver Bosch was in the big blind and had check-called all in for his stack of approximately 120,000 against Kayhan Mokri in early position.

There was a long period of anticipation as the two players awaited the other tables to complete their hands on the bubble. The two talked to each other, but never fully revealed their holdings. Reportedly, Bosch had said he had a pair, but when he was asked if it was the same pair, he responded with "no chance", leaving both players uncertain as to who would win the pot.

Eventually, numerous cameras swarmed the table and the players chuckled at the sheer amount of people surrounding them. The tournament director then instructed the players to simultaneously turn over their cards.

Bosch showed {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}, but it was no good as Mokri tabled {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} to claim the pot and eliminate Bosch, who would chop the minimum payouts with the other players eliminated on the bubble.

As a result, Rouvet, Mulders, and Bosch will split the 326th and 327th place money, collecting €5,907 each.

Jordon Takes a Chance, Avoids Bubbling

Nível 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Terry Jordon
Terry Jordon

During hand-for-hand play on the stone money bubble, Gabriel Nedelcu open-jammed a big stack from the cutoff. Terence Jordon called from the small blind with the effective stack of 154,000.

"I have ace-ten," Jordan said to the shock of those at and around the table. "I know I'm in front of him."

Jordan, who sat beneath a Panama hat and had a small wooden alligator atop his cards, asked Nedelcu what he had. The opponent admitted that he hadn't looked at his cards.

"Do you have an ace?" the Brit inquired.

"No it's a four," Nedelcu said as he peeked at one card.

As the other all-in hands played out across the tournament room, Jordon called a friend and described his bubble predicament through the phone.

"I know it's a fold," he shrugged. "I'm not here to win 8,000 pounds."

Terence Jordon: {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Gabriel Nedelcu: {9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}

Jordon was indeed ahead but a nine in the window on the flop of {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} gave his opponent the lead.

"There's a nine," Jordon said into his phone.

The {6-Clubs} on the turn didn't change things but the {10-Hearts} on the river saved Jordon from bubbling, though it took him a moment to realize it.

"Oh, it's a ten!" he cheered.

"Was that you, Terry?!" a friend asked after the action.

"I took a chance," Jordon said. "I knew he was light."

Ruijs Ruins Cuellar's Ill-Timed Bluff

Nível 15 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Joris Ruijs
Joris Ruijs

A massive pot was just passed to Joris Ruijs as Diego Cuellar was seen leaving the tournament floor.

"It's amazing what some people will do", said one of Ruijs' tablemates as he stacked an absolute gift that has seen him soar to one of the biggest stacks in the room.

According to Ruijs, he raised to 8,000 under the gun and was called by Cuellar in the big blind.

The flop came {4-Spades}{a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and after Cuellar checked, Ruijs bet 8,000. Cuellar then check-raised to 22,000, which Ruijs called.

On the {j-Spades} turn, Cuellar bet 64,000 and Ruijs called.

The river brought the {9-Diamonds} and Cuellar jammed 263,000 into a roughly 200,000 chip pot.

Ruijs happily called to see Cuellar only had {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, while he held {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} for a flopped set to take the huge pot and eliminate Cuellar just shy of the bubble.
