Sam Chartier Tops the EPT12 Prague Main Event Chip Counts

Samuel Chartier
Samuel Chartier

Canada’s Sam Chartier is the man to catch going into Day 2 of the Season 12 European Poker Tour Prague Main Event where 603 of the 1,037 players remain in contention for the title of champion. Chartier bagged up 211,500 chips as Day 1b came to a conclusion, 20,900 more than the Day 1a chip leader, Belarus’ Anton Astapau.

Some of the best poker players in the world survived their respective starting flights and are now in with a legitimate chance of leaving the Czech capital with the coveted winner’s trophy and an oversized novelty cheque for a sum of money most of us mere mortals can only dream of.

During our live coverage of the €5,300 buy-in spectacular, look out for such luminaries as Adrian Mateos (150,200), former EPT Prague winner Roberto Romanello (147,800), Charlie Carrel (120,500), Team PokerStars Pros Vanessa Selbst, and Johnny Lodden (66,000), Martin Hruby (58,200), Kitty Kuo (99,500), James Akenhead (98,300), Andrew Chen (74,400), and scores more household names.

The plan of action for Day 2 is to play six 75-minute levels with no dinner break, but a 20-minute break after every two completed levels. This means the tournament should be wrapped up shortly after 8:00 pm local time, and by then we should have a clearer picture of who the EPT12 Prague Main Event champion may be.

We saw Faraz Jaka get up from his table, and we made our way over just in time to discover he'd been eliminated.

We're not sure when the chips went in — it's safe to assume it was either preflop or on the flop — by we caught the cards.

Board: {6-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Jaka: {a-Clubs}{4-Spades}
David Sa De Abreu: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

David Sa De Abreu's full house bested Jaka's two pair, and that was all she wrote for "The-Toilet 0."

Reigning European Poker Media Person of the Year Eliminated

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Marc Convey
Marc Convey

Marc Convey, a recurring reporter at PokerNews, was taking a shot in his first-ever EPT Main Event. Unfortunately for the reigning European Poker Media Person of the Year, his time was just cut short by Sebastian Pauli.

It happened when Convey, who some will also recognize as a former EPTLive commentator, opened for 2,200 from middle position and Pauli three-bet to 5,400 from the button. The blinds both folded, and Convey thought for a few moments before four-betting all in for what looked to be 21,000. Pauli snap-called and Convey seemed to know he was in trouble.

Convey: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Pauli: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

Indeed, Convey was dominated, and he began to get up put of his chair. The {6-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop didn't do him any favors, and while the {5-Hearts} turn delivered him a flush draw, the {7-Clubs} river failed to complete it.

"Good luck," Convey offered the table, which also included reigning EPT Player of the Year Dzmitry Urbanovich and online legend Liviu "0Human0" Ignat.

Kings For Staples Prevent Riots

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jaime Staples
Jaime Staples

Riots were starting to break out on Twitter when it seemed as though Friend of PokerStars Jaime Staples had been knocked out from his first ever EPT Main Event, but things settled down when he gave a sign of life.

Staples was hoovering a little below the 30,000-chip starting stack, and we just went over to see what he was up to in the tournament. The first hand we watched was folded before the flop by Staples, but on the very next one he threw in a raise to 2,200 from middle position.

The action folded to Abbas Moradi in the small blind and he three-bet to 6,200, getting the big blind to quickly fold.

"All in," Staples calmly announced for 21,300, and Moradi tossed one chip forward to signal the call.

Moradi: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Staples: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

Things were looking good for the Canadian pro who remained ahead on {J-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. The turn was a bit scary as the {J-Clubs} popped up, giving Moradi a flush draw, but the river sealed the deal with the {9-Diamonds}.

Quietly Staples raked in a much needed double up, while Twitch chat would've gone crazy if they had been able to see one of their favorite players rake in a big pot.

Grieco Check Raises Moneymaker Twice in One Hand

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Nicola Grieco in the cutoff opened with a raise to 3,000 before the flop and Chris Moneymaker on the button made the call. The flop came {10-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} and Grieco checked. Moneymaker made a bet of 3,500 and soon got check raised to 10,000. Moneymaker called in position.

Grieco checked again on the {8-Diamonds} turn and again Moneymaker bet, this time 7,500. Grieco check raised for the second time, now for 25,000. Moneymaker wasn't scared that easily and called.

The river came the {7-Spades} and Grieco checked. Was he going for the holy grail of poker? Would he try the triple check raise? Would he go for the trifecta of bluffs? He certainly got the opportunity as Moneymaker bet 29,000. Grieco had 52,000 behind at this point but after just a couple of seconds he gave up and the pot went to Moneymaker.

There's No Stopping Chartier

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Sam Chartier
Sam Chartier

Sam Chartier began the day as the chip leader, and he's done nothing but build since then.

In a recent hand, Chartier opened for 2,700 under the gun and action folded all the way around to Gerald Karlic, who defended from the big blind. The {9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop saw Karlic check-call a bet of 3,400, and the dealer burned and turned the {A-Diamonds}.

Karlic check-called another bet, this time 5,100, and then both players checked the {9-Hearts} river. Karlic rolled over the {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, but it was no good as Chartier held the {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} in the hole.

George Danzer Eliminated In Interesting Hand

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
George Danzer
George Danzer

George Danzer opened for 3,400 from under the gun plus one and Boghean Andrei Lucian on the button made the call. The big blind came along for the ride and the three of them took a flop of {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}. The big blind checked and Danzer checked as well. Lucian made a bet of 6,100 which made the big blind fold almost instantly. Danzer wasn't so willing to let go of his hand and even raised, making it 14,000. Lucian called in position.

The {K-Hearts} fell on the turn and Danzer shoved all in for 26,100. The camera's, who seconds ago were trying to catch Vanessa Selbst's bust out (post to follow), swooped one table over and closed in on the action. Focus on Danzer moving in, switch to Lucian who now had the decision. The camera's were buzzing, all attention was on Lucian.

The man from Romania eventually tossed in a chip to call. Danzer showed top set with {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. Lucian tabled {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a turned flush draw on top of his flopped gutshot.

The dealer didn't waste any time burning a card and placing the {8-Spades} on the river. With hanging shoulders Danzer made his exit. Boghean Andrei Lucian started stacking, he's up to almost 120,000 now.

Birnbaum's First-Ever EPT Main Event Comes to an End

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Nancy Birnbaum
Nancy Birnbaum

Yesterday we told you the story of American poker pro Nancy Birnbaum, who was playing in her first-ever EPT Main Event.

Birnbaum did well on Day 1b, but her journey took a turn for the worst on Day 2 as she only seemed to dwindle over the course of the last three levels.

We missed her elimination, but she was kind enough to fill us in on the details. According to her, she was down to just six big blinds when she got it in holding {3-}{3-} against the {k-Spades}{q-Spades} of an opponent. It was a flip, but the coin did not come down in Birnbaum's favor as the flop contained a king.

No three would appear, and Birnbaum was left no recourse but to go enjoy the city.

Selbst Can't Get Past Andler

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Vanessa Selbst
Vanessa Selbst

We just caught Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst all in for 100 chips, and we stuck around to find out the whole story of her demise in this year's EPT Prague Main Event. After the dust settled we caught up with Swede Christopher Andler, who recapped all the action for us.

"She raised to 3,300 and I three-bet to 8,100 from the button," Andler started, as he managed to win all of her chips in the end.

"She called the three-bet, and the flop came down {K-}{7-}{5-}," Andler continued.

Selbst checked to Andler who bet 6,600 and the three-time WSOP bracelet winner check-raised to 14,000, according to Andler. The Swede made the call, and on the turn another {K-} hit.

"She bet 25,000 with just 100 chips behind and I went all in," Andler said, "And she folded right away."

Andler, with a smile, repeated himself to emphasize that she folded with just 100 chips behind, and on the very next hand she was all in automatically

The action folded to Andler while Selbst was all in for less than an ante, and he raised to 3,500, getting the other players to fold.

Selbst: {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Andler: {A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}{K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and Selbst nonupled up to 900 chips. After posting the ante of 200, Selbst was all in for 700 on the next hand, and once again she was up against Andler. Andler raised to 3,500 from the hijack and the player on the small blind three-bet to 9,000.

Andler called the three-bet in position, and the flop brought out {K-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{7-Clubs} on which the small blind bet 11,000. Andler called the bet and the turn was the {3-Spades}. The small blind fired out another 24,800 and Andler proceeded to move all in for 89,500.

After a while Andler's opponent folded, and he was once again heads up with Selbst.

Andler: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Selbst: {A-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

The river brought the {7-Diamonds} and Selbst wished the players at her table good luck before leaving the tournament area.

Staples Races for His Tournament Life

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Jaime Staples
Jaime Staples

Bjorn Wiesler put out a big stack of chips from early position. He still kept a few thousand back, but the 30,000 or so he set out essentially declared that he was going to be all in. Action then folded to Jaime Staples in the cutoff and he opted to call off for his last 21,000. The rest of the players folded and it was off to the races.

Staples: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}
Wiesler: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

Staples got it in good, and he held on the {9-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{j-Hearts} flop, though Wiesler picked up a gutshot to go with his overs.

The {A-Clubs} turn was a dagger through Staples' heart as Wiesler took a commanding lead with a pair of aces.

Staples needed a six on the river to survive, but it was not meant to be as the {4-Clubs} bricked. Ever the ambassador, Staples made sure to shake hands with everyone at the table before departing.
