Varma Storms to the Lead on Day 2

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Day 2 chipleader, Amit Varma
Day 2 chipleader, Amit Varma

It was the longest and toughest day of poker we have had all week, but finally Day 2 of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour Cebu Main Event is over.

A total of 128 players returned to the felt today to try their hand at making a deep run and late into the last level of the night, we had 29 players remaining and were on the bubble.

Eventually the bubble would burst in a brutal fashion as Mikko Turtiainen took a bad beat to go home empty handed. That left us in the money with 28 players and Day 2 was all over.

The player who put in the best effort toward the business end of the day and will have the best shot at making a run at the PHP5,927,000 first place prize was India’s Amit Varma. Late into the evening it was Jacky Wang who held the chip lead, but nearing the bubble, Varma stormed away with it and left Wang in dust.

Also joining Varma at the top of the counts will be Hoang Anh Do, Nicholas Wong and Xue Bin Pang, while the last lady standing, Kitty Kuo will start the day as the short stack.

Some of the players who started Day 2 with high hopes, but fell extremely short of any glory include Mishel Anunu, Daren Yoon, Kenneth Wong, Sangeeth Mohan and Jesse McKenzie. Also not able to hang on to their tournament lives included all three Team PokerStars Pros Celina Lin, Vivian Im and Raymond Wu.

Better luck next time to the above players and good luck for tomorrow to all the players who have made it through. A full list of chip counts can be seen below, while a Day 3 seating draw will be posted once made available.

That’s all from us here in the Waterfront Hotel and Casino. We’ll be back tomorrow from 12:15 pm and we’ll be playing down to the final nine in the APPT Cebu Main Event. Just because the day is over here in the Philippines, it doesn’t mean all the poker action is over. Be sure to check out the coverage of the EPT Grand Final. It’s currently on the money bubble over in that tournament, so don’t miss all the action.

That's All Folks

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Day 2 is over! With the money bubble bursting and 28 players remaining, it's all over for the night. We'll have a full chip count list and Day 3 seating draw up as soon as it's made available.

Dirty Bubble for Turtiainen

Mikko Turtiainen is the stone bubble at APPT Cebu. Out of position to Sungsik Bae, Turtiainen checked a connected flop, {5-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{9-Clubs}. Bae bet 9,500, putting the decision back to the short-stacked Turtiainen. He carefully cut down the 57,000 that remained in his stack, pondered the board for a few moments, and then pushed all of his chips into the middle. Bae seemed pained by the check-raise. He tanked for several minutes, finally opting to call the all in and put Turtiainen at risk.

Turtiainen: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}, a pair of queens
Bae: {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, a pair of sixes and a straight draw

Bae was behind, needing a 6 or an 8 to take the lead. He got the 8 when the turn came {8-Hearts}, drawing a roar from the crowd. When the river repeated {7-Clubs}, the entire room was happy to be in the money — except for Turtiainen, who walks away with nothing.

Bubble Update

Carter Gill has been the only player all in on the bubble so far, not receiving any action and picking up some chips preflop.

In other news, it is looking extremely likely that Amit Varma is going to end up as the chip leader. Varma and Jacky Wang have been the two largest stacks for much of the afternoon, but Varma has left Wang in a trail of dust as Varma has over 500,000.

Bubble Time

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Following David Steicke's elimination, another couple of players have quick hit the rail. That means there are only 29 players left and we are on the bubble. With that, play is hand-for-hand and we are on the bubble. Players have around 20 minutes left for the day.

Steicke Can't Hang On

David Steicke talked earlier today about a play he made on the final table of his last event in which he 3-bet shoved over an open raise with ace-ten. He wasn't sure he was happy with that play even though others assured him it was "standard".

He made the same play today and it didn't work out here, either. After Amit Varma opened with a small raise, Steicke 3-bet to 40,000, leaving himself just 5,000 behind. Varma shoved, Steicked called, and the race was on, Varma's pocket 7s against Steicke's {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. It was a swing and a miss for Steicke on a {4-Clubs}{3-Spades}{j-Hearts}{4-Spades}{7-Clubs} board. He's out.

Getting Close, But Not Close Enough

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

With 33 players still remaining and only around half a level to go here on Day 2 of the APPT Cebu Main Event, it is looking unlikely we will burst the money bubble tonight. Stay tuned to see who makes it close and who will be returning tomorrow.
