Adams Bags Chip Lead in €100,000 Super High Roller

Nível 10 : 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Timothy Adams
Timothy Adams

After ten levels of play in Event #9: €100,000 Super High Roller a total of 76 players have entered and that number is set to increase with late registration and unlimited re-entry open for two levels tomorrow.

Leading the final 33 players through to Day 2 is Timothy Adams who lead throughout most of the day. After busting Andrej Desset at the feature table, he added Jean-Noel Thorel to his list of victims - twice! And despite a late spurt by Dominik Nitsche, the German doubled Steve O'Dwyer on the final hand of the night to fall back in the standings.

"I ran really good," said Adams. "I busted a few short stacks; woke up with aces and kings when people shoved ten big blinds so that was always nice and easy. For the most part, it was a smooth sailing day; just made hands and won pots without showdown.

"I thought it was going to be one of the better 100ks of the year. I played this last year and it was a really good field. This is the reason why I came here, to play this 100k because it's one of the best ones of the year. I'm happy with the quality of the field if you want to call it that."

Adams will be taking forward 12,960,000 in chips as chip leader in this event, one place higher than in the €25,000 High Roller earlier in the festival, where he advanced from Day 1 second in chips.

"To be honest tomorrow's a new day at work," said Adams reflecting on having been in the situation before. "Sometimes maybe you're going to get ahead of yourselves, but that's just your mind playing tricks. You just turn up tomorrow and it's just another day of poker. some days are more important than others. IIf you've been doing it long enough, it's all the same. "

Other big stacks include Dominik Nitsche (9,515,000), Adrian Mateos (8,365,000), Tobias Ziegler (8,230,000), Steve O'Dwyer (7,390,000) and Stefan Schillhabel (7,275,000) on a day where five of the top eight have won WSOP bracelets before, three of which on more than one occasion.

Among the other players to play and bust today were bracelet winners Bertrand Grospellier, Niall Farrell and Fedor Holz. Jack Salter, Dietrich Fast and Anatoly Filatov, along with High Roller regulars Richard Yong, Andreas Eiler, Renato Nowak and Winfred Yu were also eliminated. Both the aforementioned Thorel and Christoph Vogelsang fired four bullets in the Super High Roller, with Vogelsang surviving with 3,590,000 in chips.

Day Recap

Unusually for a Super High Roller of this magnitude, the tournament kicked off on time with triple bracelet-winner Adrian Mateos and recent €25,000 Short Deck champion Mikita Badziakouski in the field.

However, it didn't take for long for players to get the message and the numbers swelled, with tournament officials coping admirably to manage the balancing of tables at all stages of the tournament.

Shortly after Thorel became the first casualty of the day, eliminated by Badziakouski, Fedor Holz joined the field and he was followed by €25,000 High Roller champion Michael Addamo.

There were some stand-out hands on the feature table, with David Peters flopping quads against Steffen Sontheimer's pocket aces.

But there seemed to be no stopping Adams as he climbed steadily through the counts; from tripling up with pocket jacks after both he and Renato Nowak flopped sets, to the multiple eliminations of the unfortunate Jean-Noel Thorel.

The eliminations kept on coming, with Manig Loeser, Wai Leong Chan, Markus Durnegger and, yes, you guessed it Jean-Noel Thorel all heading for the exit.

There were no late dramas, meaning Adams comfortably leads over second-place Dominik Nitsche, who was helped by eliminating Fedor Holz and Wai Kin Yong inside the final level.

The blinds resume tomorrow at 40,000/80,000 with an 80,000 big blind ante, meaning anyone choosing to register at the start of Day 2 will sit with 25 big blinds. Follow all the live updates on PokerNews.com as we finalise the prizepool on Day 2 and get closer to crowning the winner of the biggest buy-in event at the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe.

Nitsche Eliminates Holz and Yong

Nível 10 : 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Dominik Nitsche in a previous event
Dominik Nitsche in a previous event

Dominik Nitsche just eliminated Fedor Holz and Wai Kin Yong in two separate hands.

First, Nitsche managed to get rid of Holz when he had king-queen suited in a three-bet pot. Holz was playing pocket jacks and most of the money got in when the board was reading {Q-}{4-}{4-}{Q-}{J-}. Nitsche turned a full house and Holz ended up rivering a worse full house. Nitsche improved his stack by about two million in that hand.

A couple hands later it was Wai Kin Yong who moved all in from the cutoff for about ten big blinds with {K-Clubs}{7-Spades}. Nitsche called from the big blind with {A-Spades}{3-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {4-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{J-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Nitsche rivered the better hand after Yong out flopped him.

O'Dwyer Eliminates Yu in a Massive Flip

Nível 9 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

Winfred Yu raised it up from early position and Steve O'Dwyer three-bet to 380,000 on the button. Fedor Holz flat-called from the big blind but Yu stuck in a four-bet to 1,230,000. O'Dwyer five-bet jammed all in for nearly 4,000,000 which got Holz to fold and Yu called it off.

Steve O'Dwyer: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Winfred Yu: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

The flop came {k-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Yu took the lead in what was a massive flip. However, the {j-Diamonds} on the turn gave O'Dwyer a set of jacks and Yu was left drawing dead to the {a-Diamonds} on the river. The stacks were counted and Yu started with 3,785,000 while O'Dwyer barely had him covered with 3,845,000.

Thorel Clashes With Adams in Huge Pot

Nível 7 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

Andreas Eiler raised under the gun to 65,000 and Timothy Adams three-bet to 200,000 from the next seat. Jean-Noel Thorel called the three-bet from the cutoff and when it folded back to Eiler he made the call as well.

The flop was dealt {K-Spades}{10-Spades}{A-Spades} and Eiler and Adams checked to Thorel who bet 500,000. Eiler shook his head and threw his cards in the muck, but Adams called the bet.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and Adams checked to Thorel again. This time Thorel put in 1,000,000 and the action was on Adams again. Adams thought about it before moving all in for effectively 2,600,000. Thorel snap-called and when Adams opened up {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs} it was Thorel who showed {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

Thorel had plenty of outs but the {8-Clubs} was not one of them. Adams scooped the big pot and Thorel was eliminated for the third time.

An Aussie on the Rise: Two Bracelets in 2018 for Michael Addamo

Nível 6 : 12,000/24,000, 24,000 ante
Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

Things looked very grim for regulated and legal online poker in Australia when the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016 was passed in 2017, essentially shutting down the option to earn a living in front of their computers for aspiring poker players living in Down Under. Possible solutions? Relocating or focusing on live poker, after all the Crown Casino in Melbourne is the biggest casino complex in the southern hemisphere.

One of the affected Aussie online grinders was Michael Addamo, who earned most of his early merits in poker on the virtual felt. Addamo had already made the transition to live poker by then, even though the vast majority of his live cashes were still on home soil until the summer of 2016. A group of Australians can now regularly be found at the international poker tables such as Alex Lynskey, Kahle Burns, Aaron Lim and Martin Kozlov.

“I think I am actually one of the youngest from them,” Addamo said with a smile on the face. Not so much, there is less Australians playing MTT's now. There are a few guys that jump to events, but there are not so many that actually travel around actually. Not many of them have relocated.”

Addamo had won his first coveted gold bracelet in Las Vegas and added a second title to his WSOP resume at the King's Casino in Rozvadov after taking down Event #8: €25,500 No-Limit Hold'em Super High Roller for €848,702. Three six-figure scores and several five-figure cashes in the past two years have vaulted his live earnings to more than $3.1 million according to the Hendon Mob and he jumped to 9th place in the Australia all-time money list, narrowly ahead of WSOP bracelet winner Kozlov and close behind fellow rising stars Burns and Lynskey.

Michael Addamo Wins Event #8: €25,500 No-Limit Hold'em Super High Roller
Michael Addamo Wins Event #8: €25,500 No-Limit Hold'em Super High Roller

His outfit during the two days of the €25,500 Super High Roller? A t-shirt, shorts, long scarf around the neck and slippers, as if he'd just come out of the spa. But which of the two victories feels more special for the Aussie after one night of sleep?

“I think this one feels a bit more special: I previously played in a lot of High Rollers and didn't run good in those, so it feels good to get a High Roller win.”

Since 2016, Addamo has traveled to more international events and enjoyed quite some success in the United States and Macau. His biggest buy-in was a High Roller Event in Macau, where he already faced some of the players from Hong Kong and Malaysia that made the trip over to Rozvadov to take part in the ongoing high-stakes action.

The Aussie entered Day 1 of the €100,000 King's Super High Roller in level four and currently competes in his second most-pricy event, just one of many new young players that have emerged on the live poker circuit over the past few years.

“I played one in Macau that was maybe $120k, yeah, but it's pretty close. Having a hand sample on the players (from Asia) is definitely very important,” Addamo admitted in the break just before he officially received his second gold bracelet from WSOP tournament director Jack Effel over on the feature table set at King's Casino.

That this indeed happened has not quite sunk in yet, however.

“No, I mean, this is obviously quite absurd. I ran ridiculously good and I don't know what else to say. It has been a really good year.”

There may be more to come for the Aussie with plenty of big poker events on the horizon until the end of the year, and a certain festival on home soil is also not too far away with the Aussie Millions taking place in Melbourne in January 2019.

“I think this year there are still quite a few good events. I will probably do the partypoker event on the Bahamas after this, in December I am not sure, there are a few options. Prague or maybe Bellagio for Five Diamonds, then Bahamas in next year and Aussie Millions. And after that, I might take a little break.”

Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

Addamo came close at winning an Aussie Millions ring three times and won a High Roller event at the Crown Poker Championships in 2017. With his success, he is certain to be taken even more serious at the tables on home soil from now on.

“Sure, I get more recognition. There was a lot of guys that I have played with coming up the stakes. I played 1/2 at the casino when I started and there's just a lot of guys that know me for a while. I am from Melbourne originally. When I started I played a little bit at Crown and mostly online. It would be quite nice to win a title in my hometown.”

Make sure to follow along the PokerNews live updates to find out if Addamo will make another deep run during the 2018 World Series of Poker Europe.

Thomas Sends Huang to the Rail

Julian Thomas got a part of his stack in the middle against the entire stack of Shan Huang. Shan had about 15 big blinds left when he got it in the middle with {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} against the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} of Thomas.

The flop was not the worst for Huang when the dealer spread out {2-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}. The {3-Spades} turn and {9-Clubs} were not the cards Huang needed and when he got up to walk away he was still all smiles.

"I'll be back, but probably later" were his final words, for now.

Niall Farrell opened from early position and Renato Nowak flat-called on the button. Adams three-bet from the big blind to 180,000 and Farrell called.
