Charlie Carrel Leads WSOPE High Roller for One Drop After Day 1

Nível 10 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

The crème de la crème of European and world poker came together today for the first ever €111,111 High Roller for One Drop held outside of the United States here at the World Series of Poker Europe at King’s Casino, Rozvadov.

It was clear that the €111,111 buy-in was going to attract only two types of players: those who could afford that buy-in, and those who think they could beat the field a tournament of this calibre would attract.

A total of 86 players came together, and after a day which saw a whopping 27 rebuys, it is Charlie Carrel who leads the 58 remaining players ahead of Day 2.

"I feel very lethargic," said Carrel, after a long day's play, "Feels like I could probably put my head on one of these tables and go to sleep. It was a really fun day!"

Bagging second in chips is bracelet-winner and poker legend Gus Hansen who said that players in the tournament weren't used to some of his plays.

"The other players that that I made a couple of interesting plays; lines that they weren't used to. I made a couple of mistakes at the end of the day, but all things being considered it was a pretty good day."

Among the rebuys were triple bracelet winner Adrian Mateos, along with fellow bracelet-winners Dietrich Fast, Jens Lakemeier, Ivan Luca and David Peters.

2016 WSOP High Roller for One Drop winner Fedor Holz, who flew into Rozvadov especially for this event, was one of four players to re-enter twice. Igor Kurganov, Julian Thomas and Jean-Noel Thorel all fired three times in this event. All but Thorel would bag ahead of Day 2, and Holz said that he had a roller coaster of a day at the tables.

"I'm in for three, but I bagged four so I think that's a positive outcome," said Holz at the end of play, "I'm still in. It's just another tournament for me. A little nicer than the other High Rollers because it's such a big field, but it's fun; it's fun as always."

This year’s WSOP High Roller for One Drop runner-up Bertrand Grospellier tweeted before play that there would be no Doug Polk to stop him this time. However, that didn’t stop him from re-entering and he bagged ahead of Day 2.

High Roller for One Drop

The day got underway at 2 p.m. local time, with Steffen Sontheimer taking an early chip lead after eliminating The Wolf as the first casualty of the day. Other players to bust early included Pierre Neuville who fell to the flush of Jens Lakemeier, and Dietrich Fast.

14-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth turned up for the biggest event of the WSOPE so far, and proceeded to dust off his stack in around a dozen hands, after folding a straight to Bryn Kenney when the board paired, and running Ace-Ten into an opponent’s Ace-Jack.

The next chip leader was Ilya Bulychev who was the beneficiary of the coldest of decks, getting it in with an overpair against two opponents who had flopped sets. The King on the turn gave Bulychev a bigger set and he chipped up.

However, Bulychev’s chip lead didn’t last long after one of the more recent bracelet-winners in the field, Martin Kabrhel, eliminated both Igor Kurganov and Jack Salter after flopping two pair. What made things worse was that both Kurganov and Salter held pocket aces! Kabrhel sent the pair to the rail and settled in at the top of the chip counts.

The rotating door of eliminations and re-entries continued, even after the dinner break. Rob Yong and Dzmitry Urbanovich joined the field, while The Wolf, Ryan Riess and tennis legend Boris Becker were eliminated.

As the levels ticked by, Steffen Sontheimer flirted with the chip lead after the elimination of Ali Reza Fatehi, but it was Charlie Carrel who eliminated Carlo Savinelli and Mustapha Kanit to break into an eight-figure stack as the night drew to a close.

The remaining 58 players will return tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time to play down to a final table. Late registration will stay open until the beginning of level 13.

Stay tuned to PokerNews.com for all the action from the High Roller for One Drop.

Mateos Eliminated; Poker 'Unfair' says Rob Yong

Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Adrian Mateos raised to 130,000 from under the gun and Christoph Vogelsang three-bet to 375,000 from the hijack. It folded back to Mateos who then four-bet all in for 1.3m and Vogelsang called.

Adrian Mateos: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Christoph Vogelsang: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{6-Spades} and Vogelsang eliminated Mateos, boosting his stack to nearly 10m.

"Why do world-class players get good hands?" said Rob Yong, "It's unfair. Give him 8-3 off and see what he can do with that!"

Carlo Savinelli
Carlo Savinelli

Charlie Carrel raised to 125,000 on the button and Carlo Savinelli defended his big blind.

The flop came {j-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Savinelli check-called for 65,000. The turn {7-Diamonds} was checked by both players.

The river was the {k-Diamonds}. Savinelli checked and Carrel bet a whopping 700,000. Savinelli moved all in and Carrel went into the tank.

After a while the clock was called and Carrel eventually called. Savinell turned over {a-}{9-} and Carrel won the pot with {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}, eliminating Savinelli.

Loeser Holds to Eliminate Becker

Boris Becker open to 70,000 from under the gun. Manig Loeser defended his big blind. The flop came {9-}{6-}{2-} rainbow and Loeser checked to Becker who bet 225,000 with around 600,000 behind.

Loeser check-raised all in and Becker called.

Manig Loeser: {q-}{9-}
Boris Becker: {a-}{k-}

It was advantage Loeser who held top pair against the overcards of Becker. The turn was a {5-} and the river {q-} made it game, set and match to Loeser who scooped the pot, sending Becker to the rail.

Loeser now sits on just over 2.3m in chips.

Martin Kabrhel
Martin Kabrhel

The players are going on a 90-minute dinner break. We spoke to chip leader Martin Kabrhel before he went on dinner, and he said that he felt that the day had gone well so far.

"It's been pretty good; pretty lucky," he said, "But I'm feeling pretty good.

"I'm hoping to take a good stack forward to tomorrow."

Kabrhel was also in charge of buying up the T-1,000 value chips.

"However, please tell everyone how unlucky with the chip race I was." Kabrhel had four chips to color off and drew {9-}{9-}{6-}{4-} to fail to chip up a single one of them.

Players will return at around 22:30 local time.

Benjamin Pollak raised from early position to 50,000 and Bertrand Grospellier three-bet all in for 297,000 from the next position. It folded to Liv Boeree in the big blind who cold-called.

With the action back on Pollak, he asked for a count of Grospellier's stack before calling.

The flop came {k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and the two remaining players checked. On the turn, Boeree bet 500,000 into a dry side-pot and Pollak re-checked his cards before mucking.

Liv Boeree: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Bertrand Grospellier: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The river was the {6-Clubs} and Grospellier was sent to the rail.

"You were in good shape," said Pollak to Boeree, "We had the same hand," referring to the tens of Grospellier.

Kabrhel Cracks Two Pairs of Aces; Salter and Kurganov Eliminated

Nível 5 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Martin Kabrhel
Martin Kabrhel

Igor Kurganov opened to 45,000 from under the gun and Martin Kabrhel called in middle position. Jack Salter three-bet to 202,000 from the small blind and Kurganov called. Kabrhel called as well, creating a pot of more than 600,000 already preflop.

Salter was first to act on the {J-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop and checked. Kurganov bet 195,000 and Kabrhel raised with a T-500,000 chip, specifying an inaudible amount in the 400k range. Salter shoved relatively quickly all in for 805,000, which brought it back on Kurganov.

The Russian opted to cold-call Salter's shove and matched the 805,000. Kabrhel wasted no time in coming over the top all in for 2,209,000 total. Kurganov had 1,280,000 behind after calling Salter's shove, which made it a decision for all his chips. He slumped back in his chair and thought for several minutes before calling Kabrhel's shove as well.

Jack Salter: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}
Igor Kurganov: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}
Martin Kabrhel: {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Both Salter and Kurganov held pocket aces but Kabrhel was the one in the lead with two pair. Neither the {6-Diamonds} turn nor {5-Clubs} river changed the action, which gave Kabrhel all the chips and ended Salter's and Kurganov's first attempt.

Crazy Hand Launches Bulychev to Top

Nível 5 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Ilya Bulychev
Ilya Bulychev

Three players saw an {8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} flop together, with Andrej Desset first to act. He checked, as did Thomer Pidun. Ilya Bulychev bet 150,000, Desset check-raised to 417,000 and Pidun cold-called the check-raise.

Bulychev took less than five seconds before announcing all in for 1,423,000. Desset also shoved all in and Pidun snap-called, creating a side pot of around 2 million on top of the main pot.

Andrej Desset: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}
Thomer Pidun: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Ilya Bulychev: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

It was a gigantic setup for Pidun, who had ran into the dreaded set-over-set situation. Desset was in prime position to scoop up a monster pot but the {K-Spades} on the turn changed everything. Bulychev suddenly improved from the worst to the best hand, which left both Desset and Pidun drawing to their single out.

The river was the {J-Clubs} and Bulychev scooped the main pot. The Russian celebrated his good fortune with several fist-pumps in the air. Desset took the side pot with the higher set and Pidun was eliminated.

Hellmuth Makes a Quick Exit

Nível 4 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

The action didn't stop at Phil Hellmuth's table and unfortunately for him, he never found himself on the right side of it. With around 200,000 in the pot, the board read {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{6-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and Hellmuth checked from the big blind. Bryn Kenney bet 140,000 in early position and Hellmuth check-raised to 475,000. Kenney made the call and the {a-Hearts} paired the board on the river.

Hellmuth announced a bet of 500,000 and Kenney shoved all in for 967,000. "Bryn fucking Kenney," Hellmuth exclaimed as he stood up from his chair, followed by a few more curse words. Hellmuth had only 206,000 remaining but he sat in thought while talking to himself. Dietrich Fast eventually called the clock after four minutes.

"Are you really calling the fucking clock in the One Drop?" Hellmuth asked. The clock struck zero and Hellmuth's hand was declared dead but he still opened {k-Spades}{j-Clubs} to show the table.

In the very next hand, Hellmuth got the rest of his chips in the middle with {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} but ran into {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades} of his opponent. The board ran out dry for Hellmuth and he was quickly eliminated.

He started to walk away from his table but quickly returned to mention one thing, "Just so you know, I played every hand." The rest of the table agreed as they shook Hellmuth's hand before he exited the tournament area.

Sontheimer Four-Bets the Turn

Nível 3 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Steffen Sontheimer
Steffen Sontheimer

Albert Daher, on the button, and Steffen Sontheimer in the big blind saw a {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} flop together. Both players checked the flop but the {Q-Clubs} on the turn brought out the fireworks.

Sontheimer was first to act and checked. Daher bet 25,000 into the 82,000 pot, Sontheimer check-raised to 175,000 and Daher clicked it back to 425,000. Sontheimer wasn't done yet and cut out a turn four-bet to 750,000. Daher made the call in position.

The river was the {6-Hearts} and Sontheimer checked.

"I don't think you have anything," said Daher, who checked behind. Sontheimer definitely did, though, and showed {8-Spades}{4-Hearts} for trip fours. Daher nodded and mucked his hand.

"I didn't think you had anything," Sontheimer replied.
