Ashton Looking for His Second Championship, Obst and Negreanu Chase Player of the Year Points

James Obst could move into the Player of the Year lead with a win in this event
James Obst could move into the Player of the Year lead with a win in this event

It’s Day 4 of the Event #62: $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship and only 15 are left standing from the original field of 100 players.

Early Wednesday morning players decided to play down past the money bubble where two-time former PPC champion Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi fell to Isaac Haxton, bringing everyone else into the cash. Currently, everyone is guaranteed $77,320 but what each player is really looking for is the $1,395,767 first-place prize and the chance to get their name engraved on the David ‘Chip’ Reese Memorial Trophy.

One man who’s been there already is Matthew Ashton. In 2013 Ashton won this event, taking home $1,774,089. He returns today with 3,220,000 and is one of the largest stacks in the room. He looks to continue the recent trend of two-time PPC winners alongside Mizrachi and Brian Rast, who fell on Day 2.

There are also several others who are looking to etch their name into poker history, including multiple bracelet winners Daniel Negreanu (2,223,000), Shaun Deeb, (2,442,000), Paul Volpe (2,315,000), Ian Johns, (1,044,000) and Mike Matusow (565,000). Along with these players are also Isaac Haxton (who’s leading the way with 3,268,000), Elior Sion, (2,033,000), Talal Shakerchi (828,000) and Ralph Perry (508,000), all of whom are looking for their first piece of World Series of Poker gold. And of course there are several looking for their second piece of World Series of Poker jewelry such as Ivo Donev (1,900,000), Aaron Katz (1,484,000), and Scott Seiver (1,428,000).

Also still alive is James Obst (856,000). Obst sits high among the World Series of Poker Player of the Year leaderboard and will look to take this cash and climb even higher, having already locked up one bracelet this summer along with two final tables, and seven cashes. Obst currently sits 11th on that leaderboard but will look to climb higher with a good finish in this event. Negreanu is also looking for Player of the Year points as he is currently sitting just behind Obst in 13th place. A win in this event is worth 184 points which is enough to move Obst into the pole position, and could put Negreanu in contention for the title as well.

Players are scheduled to return and play another six 100-minute levels starting at 2 p.m. PDT Wednesday and PokerNews will be here with all the updates. Be sure to follow along as players are like to grind down to the final table and beyond today.

Seiver Flushes Katz

Nível 19 : 50,000/100,000, 0 ante

Limit Hold'em

Aaron Katz raised from the cutoff and Scott Seiver called from the big blind.

The flop came down {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and Seiver check-called a bet from Katz. The turn was the {8-Clubs}. Seiver checked, Katz bet, Seiver check-raised, and Katz called. The river was the {4-Diamonds}. This time Seiver bet, and Katz called.

Seiver showed {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for a flush, besting Katz's {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for a set to win the pot.

"Nice raise. You just decided to shoot it in there and pray?" remarked Katz.

"That's literally what I decided to do," responded Seiver.

Volpe Shows Obst the Nuts

Nível 19 : 50,000/100,000, 0 ante

2-7 Triple Draw

From the cutoff James Obst raised and was called by Paul Volpe in the big blind. Volpe took two on the first draw while Obst took one.

Volpe checked over to Obst on the first round of betting and called when Obst bet.

"Two again, sadly," Volpe said. Obst took one. Volpe then checked over to Obst. Obst bet and Volpe check-raised, making it two bets. Obst called.

On the last draw Volpe stood pat as did Obst. Volpe bet and Obst called.

"Wheel," Volpe said, showing {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. Obst mucked and Volpe took in the big pot as Obst fell to just over 300,000.

2-7 Triple Draw

A series of two hands sent James Obst to the rail in the round of 2-7 triple draw. We caught the first hand after the first draw. Obst was involved from the small blind against Paul Volpe on the button. Obst bet and Volpe called.

On the second draw each player took one then checked. On the last draw Obst stood pat while Volpe took one. Obst then checked over to Volpe. Volpe bet and Obst tanked a long time before folding, leaving himself with just 116,000 behind.

On the next hand Daniel Negreanu opened from the cutoff with a raise. Obst three-bet all in and Negreanu called. On the first draw both players took two. On the second draw both players took one. And on the last draw both players stood pat. Negreanu showed Obst {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} while Obst held {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} and that would do it for him. For his 15th place finish in this event Obst will take home $77,320.

Matthew Ashton raised from under the gun, Aaron Katz three-bet from the small blind, and Ashton called.

Katz drew one, Ashton drew two, Katz bet, and Ashton called. Both drew one on the second draw, Katz bet, Ashton raised, and Katz called. Both stood pat on the third draw and Katz check-called a bet from Ashton.

Donev Folds to the Last Bet

Nível 19 : 50,000/100,000, 0 ante

2-7 Triple Draw

Ivo Donev raised on the button and called a three-bet from Johannes Becker. Both players drew two.

"Expensive out of position," Donev observed.

Becker bet again and got a call and was pat this time. Donev took two again and called another bet, pausing to pose for a photographer in the meantime, flaunting his King's Casino patches. He then took a final card. Becker bet again and Donev squeezed out his cards, then tabled what looked like {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-} and mucked.

Deeb Forces a Becker Fold, Says He Was Strong

Nível 19 : 50,000/100,000, 0 ante

No-Limit Hold'em

Johannes Becker raised to 60,000 on the button. Shaun Deeb thought briefly and put in 200,000, and Becker called. Deeb bet small with 115,000 on the {4-Spades}{q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop, and Becker called. Deeb thought for about 30 seconds after the {5-Spades} turn fell and bet 250,000. Becker folded fairly quickly.

Deeb made a motion as if to rake in all of Becker's chips, causing his opponent to laugh.

"I ran bad that hand," Deeb said.

"Flopped queens full?" Mike Matusow asked.

"Not that bad."
