Ashton Looking for His Second Championship, Obst and Negreanu Chase Player of the Year Points

James Obst could move into the Player of the Year lead with a win in this event
James Obst could move into the Player of the Year lead with a win in this event

It’s Day 4 of the Event #62: $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship and only 15 are left standing from the original field of 100 players.

Early Wednesday morning players decided to play down past the money bubble where two-time former PPC champion Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi fell to Isaac Haxton, bringing everyone else into the cash. Currently, everyone is guaranteed $77,320 but what each player is really looking for is the $1,395,767 first-place prize and the chance to get their name engraved on the David ‘Chip’ Reese Memorial Trophy.

One man who’s been there already is Matthew Ashton. In 2013 Ashton won this event, taking home $1,774,089. He returns today with 3,220,000 and is one of the largest stacks in the room. He looks to continue the recent trend of two-time PPC winners alongside Mizrachi and Brian Rast, who fell on Day 2.

There are also several others who are looking to etch their name into poker history, including multiple bracelet winners Daniel Negreanu (2,223,000), Shaun Deeb, (2,442,000), Paul Volpe (2,315,000), Ian Johns, (1,044,000) and Mike Matusow (565,000). Along with these players are also Isaac Haxton (who’s leading the way with 3,268,000), Elior Sion, (2,033,000), Talal Shakerchi (828,000) and Ralph Perry (508,000), all of whom are looking for their first piece of World Series of Poker gold. And of course there are several looking for their second piece of World Series of Poker jewelry such as Ivo Donev (1,900,000), Aaron Katz (1,484,000), and Scott Seiver (1,428,000).

Also still alive is James Obst (856,000). Obst sits high among the World Series of Poker Player of the Year leaderboard and will look to take this cash and climb even higher, having already locked up one bracelet this summer along with two final tables, and seven cashes. Obst currently sits 11th on that leaderboard but will look to climb higher with a good finish in this event. Negreanu is also looking for Player of the Year points as he is currently sitting just behind Obst in 13th place. A win in this event is worth 184 points which is enough to move Obst into the pole position, and could put Negreanu in contention for the title as well.

Players are scheduled to return and play another six 100-minute levels starting at 2 p.m. PDT Wednesday and PokerNews will be here with all the updates. Be sure to follow along as players are like to grind down to the final table and beyond today.

2-7 Triple Draw

A series of two hands sent James Obst to the rail in the round of 2-7 triple draw. We caught the first hand after the first draw. Obst was involved from the small blind against Paul Volpe on the button. Obst bet and Volpe called.

On the second draw each player took one then checked. On the last draw Obst stood pat while Volpe took one. Obst then checked over to Volpe. Volpe bet and Obst tanked a long time before folding, leaving himself with just 116,000 behind.

On the next hand Daniel Negreanu opened from the cutoff with a raise. Obst three-bet all in and Negreanu called. On the first draw both players took two. On the second draw both players took one. And on the last draw both players stood pat. Negreanu showed Obst {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} while Obst held {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} and that would do it for him. For his 15th place finish in this event Obst will take home $77,320.

Haxton: {X-}{X-} / {Q-Spades}{5-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Perry: {X-}{X-} / {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Ralph Perry completed and Isaac Haxton called. Perry bet on fourth, Haxton called, Perry bet on fifth, Haxton raised, Perry reraised all in for an additional 7,000, and Haxton called.

Haxton: {Q-Diamonds}{4-Spades} / {Q-Spades}{5-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Perry: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades} / {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Haxton led with a pair of queens against Perry's sixes, and nothing changed on sixth when Haxton got the {3-Hearts} and Perry the {10-Diamonds}.

Perry showed his seventh street first and showed the {10-Spades} to make tens and sixes, but Haxton turned over the {4-Diamonds} to make queens and fours to score the elimination.

Under the gun, Talal Shakerchi raised to pot, making it 84,000 to play. Action folded to Elior Sion in the big blind who repotted. Shakerchi quickly called all in.

Sion: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Shakerchi: {A-Spades}{5-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} which kept Sion in the lead with his pair of queens and Shakerchi was eliminated from the tournament in 13th place, bringing the field down to 12 players.

Scott Seiver raised from the small blind and Mike Matusow moved all in from the big blind. Seiver called and turned up {K-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

"I haven't looked," Matusow said. "Let's wait and go one at a time."

The flop came down {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}.

"That's not a good flop," Matusow said.

The turn was the {7-Hearts} and the river was the {K-Diamonds}. Matusow would either need to have {Q-}{10-} for a straight or another {K-} with a better kicker to survive.

He turned over his first card and it was the {9-Diamonds}.

"King for a chop!" someone at the table said. But Matusow's other card was the {3-Spades} and that would do it for him. He wished everyone luck and headed for the rail in 12th place, collecting $97,328 for his run.

Seiver: {j-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Katz: {q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

Second pair was no good for Katz, and the {7-Hearts}, {k-Diamonds} runout didn't save him.

2-7 Triple Draw

After losing some more chips in 2-7 triple draw to Elior Sion, Ian Johns was short stacked again and got it in shortly thereafter.

Johannes Becker raised from under the gun, Johns called all in for his remaining 56,000 from the button, and Scott Seiver called from the big blind.

Seiver drew three, Becker drew two, Johns drew three, and Seiver check-called a bet from Becker. Seiver drew two, Becker and Johns each drew one, and Seiver check-called another bet from Becker. Each player drew one on the final draw and Seiver check-called another bet from Becker.

Becker showed {9-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-}, Seiver mucked, and Becker won the side pot. Johns showed {6-}{5-}{4-}{2-} and squeezed his last card, but a {J-} ended his tournament in 10th place.

Paul Volpe opened on the button with a raise to 70,000. Next to act was Scott Seiver who raised to 250,000 from the small blind. Johannes Becker was in the big blind and he dropped into the tank. He thought for about a minute before he announced that he was all in. Volpe folded quickly but Seiver snap-called with a stack of about 2,300,000. Becker had him covered with about 2,800,000.

Seiver: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Becker: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

"Hold!" Seiver said.

But hold he did not. The flop fell {6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. Seiver immediately stood from his seat and slammed the table. Becker faded on the {A-Hearts} turn and the {7-Hearts} river and that would seal Seiver's elimination. He quickly walked out of the tournament area without saying anything to anyone.

Haxton fanned {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}{9-Hearts} for nines and threes. Negreanu flashed {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{X-} for a pair of queens, and Haxton won the pot.

Isaac Haxton raised on the button to 100,000, and Matthew Ashton put in his last 60,000 from the small blind. Daniel Negreanu folded what he said was an awful hand in the big.

Haxton: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Ashton: {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}

Ashton was completely crushed but got almost an ideal flop, as the {2-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{a-Spades} gave him a combo draw. The {5-Spades} turn and {q-Spades} river were bricks, though, and the 2013 PPC champ bubbled the unofficial final table.
