Daniel Negreanu Leads the $50,000 Poker Players Championship Final Table

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Welcome to PokerNews' coverage of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship final table. The starting field of 100 players is down to just six, each looking to capture one of the most prestigious bracelets of the summer, the first-place prize of $1,395,767, and the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy. Six-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu leads the way into the final table with 5,930,000.

Negreanu's road to the final table was smooth at the start. He bagged a better-than-average stack on Days 1 and 2, before a tumultuous Day 3 tested Negreanu's resolve in a way that many had not seen before. Wearing his emotions on his sleeve, Negreanu showed frustration and jubilation, infuriation and exultation. With 20 players left, Negreanu was last in chips with just one-and-a-half big bets, but persevered and ran up his stack to finish Day 3 fifth out of the remaining 15 players.

"When you play limit poker on this stage against the best players in the world, every pot means something," Negreanu told PokerNews after Day 4. "Especially when you get short, every time you lose a pot or lose a bet, it's like F***. You just want to curse. I'm not going to hide it. I've been emotional throughout."

"I helped create this event when it was originally created years ago," Negreanu continued. "I always was so disappointed I hadn't done better. I had a couple of cashes and last year came in 12th. I always felt, especially this year more than ever, that it's something I wanted to win."

Negreanu is the man to beat at this final table, but it will be far from an easy task as a talented final table stands between him and bracelet No. 7.

Second in chips is Isaac Haxton with 5,205,000. A staple in the high-roller no-limit hold'em tournament scene around the globe, Haxton is flexing his mixed-game muscle thus far in the PPC. In fact, much of Negreanu's emotional flurries have been following hands against Haxton.

Elior Sion is third in chips with 4,750,000. After coming close to making last year's PPC final table, Sion has improved upon his ninth-place finish and will no doubt be looking to go the distance this year. Johannes Becker sits fourth in chips with 4,560,000, and this marks just his third career WSOP cash. Fifth in chips is Ivo Donev with 2,990,000. The former international chess master and bracelet winner is making his eighth WSOP final table. The short stack is Paul Volpe with 1,570,000. The two-time bracelet winner also cashed in last summer's PPC, and is considered among the poker masses as one of the best all-around players in the world.

Negreanu Displeased

Daniel Negreanu (right) and Johannes Becker

Stud Hi-Lo

Johannes Becker completed first to act with a {j-Spades} and Daniel Negreanu raised on his left with the {a-Clubs}. Everyone else folded, and Becker called. Negreanu caught a great card on fourth with the {3-Clubs} and continued his aggression, but Becker paired his jack on fifth and began betting.

Becker: {x-}{x-}/{j-Spades}{3-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Negreanu: {x-}{x-}/{a-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

On sixth, Negreanu slammed his chips together and muttered something to himself. He counted out the last two bets he'd have to call, this one and a presumed river bet, and thought over a minute before sliding in a call. Becker bet the end as well, and Negreanu sighed and called.

Becker showed {j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for three jacks.

"Bravo, man," Negreanu said. "Bra-f******-o."

Volpe Survives on Seventh Street Against Haxton

Nível 23b : 120,000/240,000, 0 ante
Paul Volpe and Isaac Haxton
Paul Volpe and Isaac Haxton

Stud Hi-Lo

Haxton: {X-}{X-} / {2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Becker: {X-}{X-} / {2-Spades}{9-Diamonds} - fold
Volpe: {X-}{X-} / {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{A-Spades}

Isaac Haxton was the bring-in, Johannes Becker completed, Paul Volpe called, and Haxton called. Becker checked on fourth street, Volpe bet, Haxton called, and Becker folded.

Haxton paired up on fifth street and checked, Volpe bet, Haxton raised, and the rest of Volpe's stack got into the pot.

Haxton: {2-Diamonds}{5-Spades} / {2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Volpe: {3-Clubs}{A-Clubs} / {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{A-Spades}

Haxton had a full house for the high, while Volpe needed to catch running cards to beat the full house or a low card to chop.

Volpe caught a non-helpful {9-Clubs} on sixth while Haxton hit an {8-Diamonds}, but Volpe survived with the {6-Diamonds} on seventh street to make seven-six low to survive.

2-7 Triple Draw

Eior Sion raised and Paul Volpe reraised on his left, in the cutoff. Sion called and both players drew two. Sion led out after that and drew one, while Volpe still needed two. Sion bet again and Volpe raised. Sion called, and Volpe had about 75,000 back. Sion took a final card, while Volpe was pat. Sion put the last of it in and Volpe called.

Sion turned over {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}, and Volpe mucked his hand to a round of "good games."

Pot-Limit Omaha

Isaac Haxton raised to 280,000 from the cutoff, Ivo Donev called from the button, and Daniel Negreanu called from the big blind.

The flop came down {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}, and Negreanu bet the pot for 880,000. Haxton folded, Donev raised, and Negreanu called all in for about 1,650,000.

Donev: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Negreanu: {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

Negreanu wasn't in great shape, as Donev had the better club outs, but Negreanu did have an inside straight draw. However, the {2-Clubs} turn locked up hand for Donev with the better flush, rendering the {6-Diamonds} river moot.

Haxton Making Money

Nível 25 : 200,000/400,000, 0 ante
Isaac Haxton has built a chip lead in the first session of the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship
Isaac Haxton has built a chip lead in the first session of the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship

Ike Haxton would leap four places on the all-time money list if he can close out this $50,000 Poker Players' Championship, but Haxton is not here for the trophy or even the bragging rights of taking down a tournament that so many players have declared as tournament all the top players want to win.

"“I’m not a big glory chaser. I’m just here to make money," Haxton told us as the players broke for 15 minutes with just three opponents standing in Haxton's way of the $1,395,767 top prize.

He's also not concerned about losing Daniel Negreanu early on in fifth place: “I’m just playing. I’m not particularly concerned with who is eliminated in what order. I just want to win.”

Despite strength in other areas, Haxton's hopes have been boosted by running well in a variant in which he's not so well-versed.

“Obviously, my best games are no-limit hold'em and pot-limit Omaha, but as it's turned out, I’ve run really hot in the stud games for some reason. There’s no justice in poker."

Haxton's specialties aside, he agrees that his edge against players in their weaker games may mean he has success in games that wouldn't be the ones he'd choose to press home his advantage.

"Of course, I’m thinking about how other people are playing [the different variants]. I have just under 9.2 million chips, so I still have the chip lead.

Can Haxton hold the lead all the way to winning his first WSOP bracelet? He may care more about the money, but he's in pole position to grab the gold, too.

No-Limit Hold'em

Elior Sion raised to 215,000 on the button, and Isaac Haxton called in the small blind. Ivo Donev made it 1,650,000 in the big blind, pushing in all of his T25,000 chips and leaving himself just a couple of towers of T5,000 chips behind. Sion folded quickly, but Haxton took longer.

Haxton drooped his head toward his chips, deep in thought for about a minute, and then slid forward a tower of T100,000 chips with an all-in announcement.

Donev shot out of his chair and snap-called, tabling {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}.

"That's not good for me," Haxton said, turning over {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

Neither was the {10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop or the {q-Spades} turn. However, the {5-Diamonds} fell on the river, much to the delight of at least one railbird rooting hard for Haxton. Donev calmly shook hands with his opponents.

No-Limit Hold'em

Isaac Haxton raised to 250,000 from the button, Johannes Becker three-bet to 1,000,000 from the small blind, Elior Sion folded his big blind, Haxton four-bet to 2,100,000, and Becker called.

The flop came down {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, and Becker checked to Haxton, who continued for 2,700,000. Becker took about 75 seconds before he check-raised all in for 6,920,000, and Haxton called with {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Becker, however, tabled {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}.

The turn was the {J-Diamonds}, giving Haxton a few outs to a chop, but the river was the {5-Diamonds} to lock up the massive double for Becker.

Stud

Elior Sion completed with the {j-Diamonds}, and Isaac Haxton raised with the {7-Spades}. Sion called, then check-called fourth street. He bet out on fifth when each player caught a king. Haxton called, then put the remainder of his chips in on sixth after catching an ace.

Sion: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}/{j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Haxton: {7-Hearts}{4-Spades}/{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

Haxton had the lead going to the final card with sevens plus blockers to a couple of Sion's outs. Sion squeezed out his card and said it was 50-50 whether Haxton would need to improve. He turned over the {9-Diamonds}, making nines up and putting the pressure on Haxton to find another pair or a seven.

Haxton peeked down at the {10-Diamonds} and shook everyone's hand.

The two finalists stepped away from the table for a short, unscheduled break.

After a few smaller pots and chops, Johannes Becker took the chip lead with a sizable scoop.

Becker raised from the button, and Elior Sion defended his big blind.

The flop came down {K-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and Sion check-called a bet from Becker. The turn was the {3-Spades}. Sion checked, Becker bet, Sion check-raised, Becker re-raised, and Sion called. The river was the {2-Spades}, and Sion check-called a bet from Becker.

Becker tabled {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}{6-Spades} for the nut flush with a six-five low, Sion mucked, and Becker took down the pot.
