Alex Rocha

Day 2 of Event #43: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em SHOOTOUT at the World Series of Poker starts today at 12 noon local time. Just 120 out of 1,025 players who started yesterday will return to play round 2. Everyone is guaranteed a minimum of $4,837, but they will all be aiming for that WSOP gold bracelet and $257,764 for first place.

Today looks like it will be a day filled with loads of action and a number of notables in the field. As the team looks at the seat draw, one table really jumps out — Table 718 — where Kevin Eyster, John Phan, Kevin MacPhee, Alex Rocha, Jonathan Tamayo and Kenny Hallaert will be seated. This is a table where the players have collected five bracelets and six WSOP Circuit rings in total, but only one of them can make it through to tomorrow's finale.

There are still many other big names in the field as well, including Chris Moorman, Jonathan Little, Josh Weiss, Daniel Strelitz, Steve Foutty, Vojtech Ruzicka, Russell Thomas, Tom Middleton, Carlos Mortensen and Taylor Paur.

Keep following the live updates here on PokerNews to find out which 12 players will make it to Day 3.

Andrew Brokos Back From the Brink

Andrew Brokos
Andrew Brokos

Three players had chips in the pot hoping to see a flop by the time it got to Andrew Brokos in the small blind who moved all in for 26,000.

The big stack at the table, Paul Michaelis, was the player who called.

Brokos: {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Michaelis: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

The board ran out {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}.

When the dust settled, it was Brokos who had hung on with the baby pair to collect the pot, or, as Michaelis put it, “Hard to win with pocket threes on that flop.”

Carlos Mortensen opened the action and Tom Middleton three-bet and then called an all-in from Mortensen to put his tournament life at risk.

Mortensen: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Middleton: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Hearts}.

“Those suited ace-kings are really working out for you,” another player said. The Englishman was sent to the rail and Table 728 became five-handed.

Action From Table 726, Heads-Up

Paul Michaelis
Paul Michaelis

The two remaining players, Erle Mankin and Paul Michaelis are acting fast while also chatting. Here are some of the hands we've just followed:

Hand #1: The flop was {8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, Mankin check-called the 7,000 bet of Michaelis. The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and Mankin check-called the 17,000 bet of Michaelis. The {8-Diamonds} on the river completed the board and they both checked. Mankin showed {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades} for two pairs with the queen kicker. Michaelis showed {10-Hearts} for the same two pairs but mucked the rest as it was a lower kicker.

Hand #2: Mankin raised to 8,000 and Michaelis called. The flop gave them {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and Michaelis check-called the 7,000 bet of Mankin. The turn was the {8-Clubs}, Michaelis opened to 10,000, and Mankin called. The {4-Diamonds} on the river completed the board, Michaelis bet 36,000, and Mankin folded.

Hand #3: Michaelis raised to 6,500 and Mankin called. The flop was the {4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Mankin check-called the 6,000 bet of Michaelis. The {4-Diamonds} came on the turn and Mankin check-called the 12,000 bet of Michaelis. The {Q-Clubs} on the river meant Mankin check-called the 25,000 bet of Michaelis. Michaelis showed {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for two pairs, sixes and fours. Mankin mucked.

Hand #4: Mankin raised to 6,000 and Michaelis called. The flop came {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{K-Spades}, Michaelis checked, Mankin opened to 6,000, Michaelis raised to 16,000, and Mankin went all in. Michaelis stood up, asked for a count, had a think, and then decided to call. Mankin still had 136,500 behind.

Mankin: {K-Clubs}{4-Hearts}
Michaelis: {K-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

The turn was the {Q-Spades} and the river was the {J-Spades} so Mankin doubled up.

Robert Kuhn is the Second Player Through

Robert Kuhn
Robert Kuhn

We got to the table to see Chris Brand's chips being pushed to Robert Kuhn and Brand walking away. We could also see their hands and the board:

Brand: {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Kuhn: {6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}

We got told by Kuhn that it was an all-in on the {7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop. The turn was the {J-Diamonds} and the {k-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

Kuhn has bagged 636,000 to take with him to tomorrow.

Carlos Mortensen Doubles Up Russell Thomas

Russell Thomas
Russell Thomas

We got to the table to see around 140,000 in the pot already. The flop was {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{K-Spades}, Russell Thomas opened to 50,000 from the button, and Carlos Mortensen shoved all in from the small blind. Thomas snap-called.

Thomas: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Mortensen: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

They both had kings but Thomas had the ace-kicker. The turn gave them the {K-Diamonds} and the river completed the board with the {7-Spades}.

Table 728 is playing three-handed at the moment.
