Legends Race for the $1,500 Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Title

Max Pescatori
Max Pescatori

From a starting field of 595, only 16 players will return to the Brasilia Room Thursday at 2 p.m. to face off for the Event #40: $1,500 Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better title. Vying for a bracelet and the $173,228 first-place prize are several of the best "end bosses" who have already earned fame at the World Series of Poker.

The line-up on Table 2 features 14 WSOP triumphs combined among four players at the table. They're led by the captain Ted Forrest with 416,000 chips and six bracelets to his name. Forrest has won two stud and two razz events at the World Series, but he's yet to earn one in stud hi-lo. The 52-year-old has been around for nearly three decades, earning his first live cashes in the early 1990s.

Forrest will, however, have to outlast exceptionally gifted players who will meet him at the last two tables. One of them is "The Italian Pirate" Max Pescatori, a four-time bracelet winner himself, whose packed résumé boasts 70 cashes from the WSOP. Pescatori, who will continue with 324,000 in chips, conquered the $10,000 Stud Hi-Lo Championship event back in 2015.

Another legend at that table is famous theoretician David Sklansky, a pioneer of poker writing. Sklansky has authored or co-authored 13 books on gambling or poker. He certainly knows how to apply his math skills in practice, too, as has three bracelets to his name. While he'll return to the second shortest stack (117,000), Sklansky still has hopes for bracelet number four.

Forrest, Pescatori and Sklansky will also tangle with Justin Bonomo, an accomplished high roller with over $16.7 million in live tournament cashes. Bonomo already has one WSOP title under his belt. Bonomo will start the final day with 210,000.

Don Zewin, Tim Finne and Walter Treccarichi are also well-known poker heroes, while Dimitrios Magdalinos showed some hot wheels on Day 2, too.

While Table 2 comprises of some of the iconic players across generations, Table 1 can't be left without attention either. Two biggest stacks, decorated WSOP champion Steve Jelinek (485,000) and Hal Rotholz (445,000), will battle Barbara Lewis (407,000), the last woman standing who is currently fifth in chips.

Follow PokerNews live updates to see who emerges from this talented group as champion as the tournament is set to conclude Thursday evening.

Jack Rosenfeldt Eliminated in 16th Place ($5,913)

Jack Rosenfeldt
Jack Rosenfeldt

Jack Rosenfeldt completed with the {5-Hearts}, Bill Kohler raised from the bring-in with {2-Clubs}, and Rosenfeldt put in all but his last T1,000 chip on another raise. Kohler called and they got the rest in on fourth.

Rosenfeldt: {6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} / {5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Kohler: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} / {2-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{8-Spades}

Rosenfeldt turned over a {j-Spades} on the river, serving only to block Kohler's out. But Kohler picked up the {a-Spades} anyway to make aces up for the win, and Rosenfeldt is the days first elimination.

Eric Pratt - 14th Place

Two players limped in before Eric Pratt completed with the {9-Diamonds}. Hal Rotholz made it two bets with the {2-Clubs} from the bring-in, and Bill Kohler called both raises after having limped with {3-Spades}. Rotholz continued betting on fourth, fifth, and sixth streets.

Pratt: {x-}{x-}/{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Rotholz: {x-}{x-}/{2-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Spades}{10-Spades}
Kohler: {x-}{x-}/{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

At that point, Kohler raised. Pratt was staring at 60,000 to him, witting with only about 75,000 total. He called, and Pratt called, as well. On the end, Kohler and Rotholz got a series of bets in for a side pot that put Kohler all in but proved pointless.

Kohler excitedly rolled over {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{q-Hearts} for quads, while Rotholz had {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for a six-low. Pratt flashed what looked like two aces before mucking.

Barbara Lewis called a bet from Hal Rotholz on fifth street and then got her remaining chips in on sixth.

Lewis: {a-Spades}{4-Spades}/{5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Rotholz: {x-}{x-}/{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Lewis turned over an {a-} for aces up, but Rotholz had {7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades} to make a ten-high straight.

Steve Jelinek Eliminated in 11th Place ($9,150)

Nível 24 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Steve Jelinek - 11th Place
Steve Jelinek - 11th Place

Steve Jelinek had the small card with the {2-Spades} and completed for a full bet. Ernest Bohn called with the {8-Clubs}, and Bill Kohler raised with the {3-Hearts}. Jelinek put in his last 40,000 total, and Bohn called. It went check-check on fourth street, and Bohn took the lead with bets on fifth and sixth.

Jelinek: {x-}{x-}/{2-Spades}{7-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Bohn: {x-}{x-}/{8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Kohler: {x-}{x-}/{3-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Kohler and Jelinek had open pairs, while Bohn was working with four to a straight.

Bohn and Kohler both checked on the end, with Bohn showing {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for fours and a low. Kohler had {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for just his open tens. Jelinek turned over {10-Spades}{3-Clubs}. He needed to improve to two pair or better to triple up. However, he pulled the {j-Diamonds}, and he wished everyone good luck.

Don Zewin Eliminated in 10th Place ($11,704)

Nível 24 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Don Zewin - 10th Place
Don Zewin - 10th Place

Don Zewin got his remaining chips in on fifth street against Bill Kohler after Zewin brought-in for a complete bet and Kohler raised.

Zewin: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}/{3-Clubs}{k-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Kohler: {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}/{a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{4-Diamonds}

Zewin was ahead with queens, while Kohler had four to a low and ace-high. He snagged the {a-Hearts} right away, and Zewin peeled a {5-Clubs}. Kohler got a useless {10-Diamonds} on seventh to wind up with just aces.

"Two across," Zewin said, which would mean a winner, but he corrected himself quickly: "Three across."

He tossed the {6-Spades} into the air and headed for payouts.

Walter Treccarichi Eliminated in 9th Place ($11,704)

Nível 24 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Walter Treccarichi - 9th Place
Walter Treccarichi - 9th Place

Walter Treccarichi completed first to act with the {5-Spades}, and Max Pescatori made it two bets with {5-Diamonds} after a bunch of folds. That didn't deter Bill Kohler or Ernest Bohn, but they dropped out on fourth street when Pescatori bet again, with Treccarichi calling off his remaining chips.

Pescatori: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}/{5-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Kohler: {x-}{x-}/{7-Hearts}{2-Clubs} (folded on fourth street)
Bohn: {x-}{x-}/{2-Diamonds}{q-Spades} (folded on fourth street)
Treccarichi: {10-Spades}{3-Spades}/{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Treccarichi had four spades and four to a low, so he had countless ways to improve for at least half of the pot as Pescatori finished with the {9-Diamonds} for just a pair of aces. Treccarichi rolled over the {5-Hearts}, though, a useless one pair.

Ted Forrest Eliminated in 8th Place ($15,245)

Nível 25 : 30,000/60,000, 7,000 ante
Ted Forrest
Ted Forrest

Ted Forrest was fighting bravely with his short stack, but he couldn't fully recover to get back to contention. He lost his tournament life in a contest against a man on the other side of the leader board, Hal Rotholz.

Forrest completed, and Rotholz made it two bets. Forrest called, and fourth street was checked through. Rotholz bet on fifth, and Forrest called off for his remaining 55,000.

Ted Forrest: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} / {8-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Hal Rotholz: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} / {2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Forrest had queens in the hole, but Rotholz showed an even higher pair. The {9-Spades} turn and {4-Hearts} river didn't connect with Forrest's hand, and he left the tournament in eighth place with $15,245.

Shannon Petluck - 7th Place
Shannon Petluck - 7th Place

Justin Bonomo completed with the {3-Spades}, Shannon Petluck raised with the {a-Clubs}, and Ernest Bohn called from the bring-in with the {2-Clubs}. Bonomo made it three bets, and Petluck moved all in for 79,000. Bohn called, then called down as Bonomo bet every street with a board that developed very strongly.

Bonomo: {x-}{x-}/{3-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}/{x-}
Petluck: {x-}{x-}/{a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}/{x-}
Bohn: {x-}{x-}/{2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Hearts}/{x-}

"I have exactly what it looks like," Bonomo declared. "Three kings."

He showed {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} for trips. Bohn rolled over {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Spades} for a low. Petluck said he started with aces and a ten, so he would need the final king for Broadway, another ace for aces full, or a queen for queens full. He peeled the {7-Clubs}, though, and told everyone it was a great tournament.

Max Pescatori Eliminated in 6th Place ($27,275)

Nível 27 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Max Pescatori
Max Pescatori

Max Pescatori came back from dinner with just one big bet, and his stint in the seventh level couldn't have been shorter. He was knocked out in the first hand.

Pescatori completed with the {A-Spades} and found calls from Bill Kohler and Justin Bonomo. Pescatori put his remaining 45,000 in on fourth street, and both of his opponents called again. Kohler and Bonomo then checked all remaining rounds.

Max Pescatori: {X-}{X-} / {A-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} / {X-}
Justin Bonomo: {X-}{X-} / {2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades} / {X-}
Bill Kohler: {X-}{X-} / {3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds} / {X-}

Kohler had {6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} in the hole for a six-low, and the open tens secured him the other part of the pot. Bonomo had {A-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for a pair of sixes and a seven-low, while Pescatori opened his {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{J-Hearts} before leaving the tournament.

The four-time bracelet winner from Milan notched his 71st cash from the WSOP, adding a fifth-place finish in the $1,500 Stud Hi-Lo Event to the packed résumé. Pescatori picked up $27,275 for his performance.
