With around 15,000 in the pot on a board of 3♠3♦7♥2♠, Johannes Becker bet 11,000 from early position and David Marshall called in the cutoff.
The river was the A♣ and Becker bet another 9,500. Marshall gave it some thought before flicking in the chips to call. Becker then showed Q♦Q♠, but Marshall had A♠9♠ for a rivered two pair to win the pot.
Another year, another record with the 2024 WSOP Main Event having surpassed last year's figure of 10,043.
The official figure is as yet unconfirmed, but the WSOP has announced that the record was broken shortly after 3 p.m. local time midway through the second level of Day 1d.
The prize pool is also yet to be announced, but it's widely expected to be a figure similar to the $12,100,000 that Daniel Weinman won twelve months ago.
Late registration remains open until approximately 5:10 p.m. ET. The WSOP is reminding players who wish to max late register the Main Event that they need to be registered and IN LINE at the Late Registration desk by the start of Level 8.
Jared Reinstein moved all in from under the gun for his last 8,800. David Ta reraised all in for 18,100 on the button and the blinds got out of the way.
Jared Reinstein: A♥A♣
David Ta: J♦J♣
Two short stacks with real hands, the board ran out 5♣7♥3♣9♦8♦ and Reinstein kept his tournament run alive.
On the turn, the board read 6♥K♦Q♥8♠. In middle position, Joseph Medaris was facing an all in cutoff shove from George Holmes for 27,000 into a pot of about 13,500.
Medaris thought for several moments before he folded and Holmes gathered some needed chips.
Action picked up on a board showing 10♦8♠6♠ in a hand with Steven Piper all in out of the big blind for his remaining 15,700 against an opponent on the button.
The player on the button was in the tank shuffling chips and looking at the board before asking the dealer for a count, which the dealer confirmed. The player on the button then called to put Piper at risk.
“I flopped a straight,” Piper said before tabling his hand.
Steven Piper: 9♣7♥
Opponent: K♣10♣
Piper was well ahead in the hand after the flop. And it remained that way after the dealer placed Q♠ on the turn and 2♣ on the river to give Piper a double up.
