The High Spark of Lowball Pros Shines on Day 2 of Event #60: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw

Day 2 of Event #60: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw lived up to its promise, as some of the best players in the world clashed in what some call “the purest form of poker.” Multiple WSOP bracelet winners, Main Event Champions, and those vying to add a first bracelet to their illustrious careers did battle, winnowing their way from 159 hopefuls to a select 24 who will meet again on Day 3 to crown a champion.

Among those distinguishing themselves on Day 2 include nine-time bracelet winner and WSOP Hall of Famer Erik Seidel, who operated all day as a silent assassin, continuing the dominance he showed on Day 1. Seidel placed himself in a prime position to join Johnny Chan and honor the legacy of Doyle Brunson as the only ten-time bracelet winners. Chan himself fell short of an 11th bracelet, busting out early on Day 2.

Five-time winner Adam Friedman also finds himself among the leaders, sparring with Seidel often as they sat alongside each other for a sizable portion of the day’s endgame.

Chip leader Ryan Moriarty continues to surprise in 2023 WSOP lowball events, having finished second to Nick Pupillo in Event #52: $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw Lowball (which combines 2-7 triple draw, A-5, and Badugi) just last week.

Bracelet winners Nick Guagenti, Chad Himmelspach, Robert Campbell, and Richard Ashby fill out the top ten chip counts, along with surprise challenger Robert Massman.

Massman is a longtime lowball pro from California who returned to the WSOP streets after a long absence. With his son (who himself cashed a Main Event satellite Tuesday) as his biggest supporter on the rail, “Razzman” will return on Day 3 to make a run at a potential heartwarming Cinderella story.

Phil Hellmuth, who has had so many deep runs this year, was unable to complete his pursuit of a 17th bracelet, and a second in no-limit 2-7.

Among others coming up short of lowball glory on Day 2 were John Monnette, Barry Greenstein, Benny Glaser, Brian Hastings, Brian Rast, Michael Moncek, Tom Schneider, Greg Raymer, Chris Vitch, Jim Collopy, Koray Aldemir, Allen Kessler, Ryan DePaulo, and Chino Rheem.

Day 3 will restart on June 28 at 1:00 p.m. local time at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas and play down to the eventual winner. There will be 15-minute breaks every two levels and a dinner break that is yet to be decided.

From the cutoff Nick Guagenti raised 25,000. Maria Ho in the small blind asked Guagenti to reveal the rest of his stack. Then she sized up the stack of big blind Elia Ahmadian.

Placing four green 25,000 chips on top of a stack of twenty pink 5,000 chips, she moved 200,000 into the middle, enough to put either or both of them all in.

First Ahmadian, then Guagenti folded, and Ho took down the pot.

Having completed the draw, Liam Gannon moved all in for his last 29,000 from under the gun. Robert Massman called from the cutoff.

"If you're calling, you got me," said Gannon, and showed a ten-nine. Massman did in fact have him with ninety-eight, and Gannon's inspiring run came to an end.

Eric Rabl opened to 12,000 from middle position and was called by a player on the button. Yufei Zhong, meanwhile, was forced all in out of the big blind.

Zhong took three and the button player one while Rabl stood pat. Rabl then bet 13,000, getting a call from the button player who mucked after Rabl tabled 9x8x4x3x2x. Zhong could only muster a QxXxXxXxXx hand, sending him out of the tournament empty handed on the pure bubble.

After the conclusion of a hand in which Andrew Kelsall's ace-low won a battle of the blinds with Brian Hastings, talk turned to the assembled WSOP bracelets at the table.

Kelsall listed them off, "I've got one, Phil [Hellmuth] of course, you've got sixteen, Brian [Hastings] you've got six, and Brad [Ruben] you've got four. That's 27 at this table. Do you think we up that to 28 in this tournament?"

"I only know one thing, it won't be Jon [Turner]," joked Ruben.

"Who has a bracelet in 2-7?" asked Kelsall.

"I have a triple draw," replied Hastings.

"I have one," said Hellmuth. "And two seconds, and a fourth. I finished second to Billy Baxter in 1993. Smaller field, but 58 of the best players in the world. I laid down a pair of fives when I was short-stacked and it cost me the bracelet. TJ was in that, Doyle... It was the event for us."

Ariel Celestino

Andrew Donabedian opened to 8,000 from middle position before Benny Glaser three-bet to 26,000 from the cutoff. Ariel Celestino then cold four-bet to 80,000 out of the small blind, getting a quick fold from Donabedian. Glaser took his time but ended up making the call to send action to the draw.

Celestino took one while Glaser stood pat after which the Brazilian counted out a bet of 110,000, leaving himself around 20,000 behind. Glaser, after checking how much his opponent had left, called but mucked after Celestino tabled 7x6x5x3x2x for a winner to leave himself short as the bubble looms large.

Phil Hellmuth

Andrew Kelsall raised to 6,500 from early position and Phil Hellmuth, refreshed from an earlier nap at the table, called from the small blind.

Hellmuth discarded a pair of deuces face up and Kelsall patted. Kelsall continued for 10,000, and Hellmuth showed 7x4x3x2x before folding.

Kelsall laughed and asked, "What am I supposed to bet there to get a call?"

Hellmuth replied, "I can't teach you how to play the game," before adding a more conciliatory, "I think you've won more pots off me than just about anyone."

Erik Seidel

Day 2 of Event #60: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw at the 2023 World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas will see 159 players return from a starting field of 548, which created a total prize pool of $731,580. Only 83 of those will make it into the money, securing themselves a minimum of $2,404, but all eyes will be on the top prize of $151,276 along with a WSOP gold bracelet slated to go the eventual winner's way.

A familiar set of names are currently situated in the top three chip counts with tournament regular Michael Trivett leading the way on 401,000. He was able to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field as Hall of Famer and 1988 WSOP Main Event runner-up Erik Seidel is the closest to catching him, sitting on a stack of 259,000. Online and live high stakes crusher Mike Watson rounds out the top three with 208,000.

Day 2 restarts today in the Horseshoe Event Center at 1 p.m. with blinds resuming at 1,000/2,000 with a 3,000 ante. Levels will continue to be 60-minutes in length with play for the day continuing until just five players remain.
