Welcome to Day 1 of $10,000 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed Championship

Ben Diebold
Ben Diebold

The first $10,000 buy-in event of the 2023 World Series of Poker gets underway at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. Many of live poker's biggest names and mixed game aficionados are expected to join the action for Day 1 of Event #10: $10,000 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed Championship, which is set to get underway at 2 p.m. local time.

A total of 20 different poker variants are included in the mix and any one of them can be selected every orbit. This includes a mix of flop, stud, and draw games to choose from and a total of ten levels are scheduled for the first of three tournament days. The first six levels will last 40 minutes each while the final four have an increased level duration of 60 minutes each with a break scheduled every two hours of play.

At least two new games have been introduced to the rotation for this year, which was also the case for the Event #5: $1,500 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed as well. The lower buy-in edition came to a conclusion one day ago with the victory of Chad Eveslage, who defeated Andrew "AJ" Kelsall in heads-up play to earn his second WSOP bracelet in a field of 456 entries.

Eveslage didn't enter the Championship version one year ago while Kelsall was among the participants without reaching the money stages. The tournament drew a record field of 123 entries and Ben Diebold defeated Mike Gorodinsky after a brief heads-up tussle of 45 minutes during an unscheduled Day 4.

History of the Dealer's Choice Championship

Seven editions of the ultimate testament of versatility in the world of poker have taken place so far. Six times, the $10,000 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed Championship took place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino before the first WSOP at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas attracted a new record attendance of 123 entries, generating a prize pool of $1,146,975.

Whether or not a new record will be set in 2023 remains to be seen, but it is certain that Adam Friedman will aim to extend his tremendous track record in the tournament. He earned three consecutive victories between 2018 and 2021, a feat which has been widely considered as one of the most impressive achievements in the history of the WSOP. Friedman didn't make it past Day 1 one year ago, which also applied for many of the biggest names in the mixed games spheres.

As of Day 2 and until the conclusion of the tournament, the level duration increases to 90 minutes each.

No Limit 5 Card Draw

With the drawing round already completed, Patrick Leonard bet 7,000 and that sent David Moskowitz deep into the tank. He needed more than two minutes to call and then mucked when Leonard showed the KQJ109 for a king-high straight.

Having lost a portion of his stack during the opening stages, Leonard moved back to almost the starting stack again.

Four ways after the first drawing round was completed, Clayton Mozdzen checked and Chad Eveslage bet, picking up calls from Yueqi Zhu, Larry Tull and Mozdzen. The latter and Zhu discarded two while Eveslage and Tull took one new card.

Again it was Eveslage who bet when checked to and he received three calls as all four players then discarded one each. Eveslage bet, earning calls from Zhu and Tull while Mozdzen folded.

Eveslage tabled the 7 / 7542 to earn half the pot while the 6 / 943A of Tull received the other half.

Andrew Robl: XxXxXx/8658
Brian Brunner: XxXxXx/327J - folded seventh street

Picking action up on seventh street with approximately 15,000 in the three-way pot, Andrew Robl bet, which got a fold from Brian Brunner, but Hal Rotholz now raised. Robl then made it three bets to go which lifted Rotholz from his seat to examine Robl's board more closely.

Rotholz then put in a fourth bet which Robl just called. Rothold showed his full house of kings full of sixes while Robl mucked his hand to send a healthy scoop to Rotholz.

Obst Chips Up Without Showdown

Nível 4

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Following an open raise to 1,800 on the button, Ryan Goindoo called out of the small blind. James Obst in the big blind made it 7,200 to go and Goindoo was the only caller. Both discarded one and checked to the second draw, on which Goindoo patted and Obst discarded one.

Goindoo bet 7,000 for Obst to raise to 18,800 and the call of Goindoo followed, which led them to the final draw. Both now patted and Goindoo check-folded to a bet worth 19,000.

Gerhart Among the Early Casualties on Day 1

Pot-Limit Omaha

Yuval Bronshtein selected Pot-Limit Omaha "to give Kevin a chance" as Kevin Gerhart in the one seat was left with a fraction of the starting stack. One of the first hands in the new variant, Gerhart raised on the button and Adam Friedman came along. On the tail end of said hand, the board showed 754105 and Friedman bet 3,000.

That was half of Gerhart's stack, who tank-called. Friedman tabled the J965 for trips fives and Gerhart mucked the 104.

Only 3,000 chips remained for Gerhart, who succumbed to the severe short stack soon after.

No-Limit Hold'em

Tamon Nakamura raised first to act and was called by Carol Fuchs, who then also called a bet on the 663 flop. On the Q turn, Nakamura bet again and Fuchs raised to 17,000 for Nakamura to come along to the 8 river.

Nakamura then slowed down and checked as Fuchs bet 25,000 on the button. That sent her opponent into the tank before Nakamura eventually settled on a fold.

Vengrin Doubles Through Rast

Nível 8
Matt Vengrin
Matt Vengrin

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Brian Rast raised to 2,500 in the hijack and got a call from Matt Vengrin in the big blind. Vengrin drew one card while Rast needed two.

The players checked and then each drew one on the second draw. Vengrin checked again and faced a bet of 5,000 from Rast.

Vengrin check-raised to 13,000 and after a bit of thought, Rast made the call.

Vengrin still needed to draw one, while Rast patted his hand.

After methodically shuffling his cards and contemplating his next move, Vengrin gathered his 30,200 chips and moved all in.

Rast didn't love it, but decided that his hand was too good to fold and put forward a call.

"Wheel," declared Vengrin as he indeed spread 7x5x4x3x2x on the table for a wheel, a.k.a. number one, a.k.a. a double up in that spot any day of the week.

Ruben Eliminated by Rotholz

Nível 8

Badugi

On the final draw, Brad Ruben and David Williams discarded one while Hal Rotholz patted. Ruben was all-in already and failed to catch any help with the final draw as Williams also bricked what appeared to be an 4x2xAx three card Badugi.

Rotholz showed his 10932 and that won the pot, sending Ruben to the rail. After the hand was over, Rotholz mentioned he had patted all the way with the made ten-Dugi.
