2022 WSOP Featured Females: Meet Wendeen Eolis, 1st Woman to Ever Cash Main Event

Nível 25 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Wendeen Eolis
Wendeen Eolis

In the mid 1980’s, women were considered no factor in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, and other than the famous rounder and professional gambler Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston, poker players rarely made headlines in the mainstream press. That all changed when Wendeen Eolis became the first woman to cash at poker’s “Big Dance.”

In the 1986 WSOP Main Event, Eolis battled some of the best players in the world, including Amarillo Slim, in a field of 141 runners. She was on her way to a 25th-place finish for a $10,000, return on her buy-in, and permanent bragging rights as the first woman in history to cash in the WSOP Main Event.

Eolis attributes her 1986 WSOP performance to a year of poker tutoring from one of the best, a “relatively” conservative game plan, and cooperative cards. She told PokerNews, “Even today, women can win more by bluffing less than men.”

Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

Patrick Leonard of Team Leonard raised to 260,000 in the cutoff, leaving just 5,000 behind and Justin Barnum of Tean Barnum called in the small blind.

"I'm all in in the dark," said Barnum before the {k-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop came. Leonard called after seeing the flop and both hands were tabled.

Team Leonard: {a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Team Barnum: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

"We need to hit but we're gonna get there!" Leonard yelled to his partner standing on the rail.

Indeed they did as the {a-Spades} peeled on the turn, taking the lead with a pair of aces and the {10-Spades} completed the board on the river.

Vankeuren Gets There from Behind

Nível 25 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante

A short-stacked Zachary Vankeuren of Team Vankeuren got it all in preflop against chip leader Yutaro Tsugaru of Team Tsugaru, with Vankeuren at risk.

Zachary Vankeuren: {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Yutaro Tsugaru: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Although Vankeuren was way behind, the flop of {3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{j-Spades} was very kind as he pulled ahead with his pair of nines. The turn {a-Spades} gave each player an ace, but Tsugaru could only hit a king to win. The {8-Clubs} did not deliver and Vankeuren scored a big double up.

Curtis Knight - Chris Barnes
Curtis Knight - Chris Barnes

Curtis Knight of Team Knight raised in the small blind and Zachary Vankeuren of Team Vankeuren called in the big blind.

The flop came {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts} Knight check-raised to 280,000. Vankeuren made the call.

The {4-Clubs} hit the turn and Knight moved in for 560,00.

"I knew this was coming, I had planned to beat you in the pot." Vankeuren said, "Always try to put me in a tough spots."

About two minutes had passed and Vankeuren was still talking to himself with no response from Knight, "No way I can fold this. I just don't believe you."

Another couple of minutes passed before he slammed some chips across the line to make the call and both hands were tabled.

Team Knight: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Team Vankeuren: {9-Spades}{7-Hearts}

Vankeuren had flopped top pair but was trailing behind to the pocket kings of Knight and the {3-Hearts} on the river changed nothing sending a 2,000,000 chip pot to Team Knight.
