Paris Casino had 3,209 hopefuls play 17 levels yesterday, with 498 players returning in Event #54: $500 Salute to Warriors No-Limit Hold'em at the 2022 World Series of Poker for Day 2. Of those, 482 will make the money and see a return on investment on their buy-in, with 1st place paying our eventual winner $161,256 and of course a World Series of Poker bracelet.

There will be more great veteran stories to be heard today, as the tournament itself donates a percentage of each buy-in to charities than aid those affected by war, who all need support in some way. Shaun Colquhoun is just one of those players highlighted yesterday who's still in with a shot at the title.

Rogers Busts In Three Way All In

Nível 21 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Jimmy Rogers
Jimmy Rogers

After an early position open from Michael VaVerka, veteran Jimmy Rogers moved all in for 195,000. In the next seat Winston Fowlow then moved all in for 205,000, just covering Rogers.

It folded back around to VaVerka who called.

Jimmy Rogers: {a-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Winston Fowlow: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Michael VaVerka: {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The board ran out clean for the best hand, as Fowlow tripled up on the {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{6-Hearts} busting Rogers. Still, a great run from Rogers, and he was all class as he left the table.

PokerNews had an interview on dinner break yesterday with Rogers, read more about it here: PokerNews Interview With Jimmy Rogers

Meet James Lovell, Father of 6, U.S Airforce 26 Years, Brain Tumor Survivor Playing His First WSOP Event

Nível 22 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
James Lovell
James Lovell

PokerNews caught up with James Lovell, who is sitting on around 600,000 with 209 left in the Salute to Warriors event. James, who served in multiple tours in the Gulf in Operation Southern Watch and had a career in the U.S Airforce spanning 26 years. Playing in his first ever World Series of Poker event, he's now cashed 100% of tournaments he's played.

Jim, as he likes to be referred to had gone through an operation in March to remove a tumor from his brain and has the impressive scar as a memento. He had to undergo two further operations, one to help with an infection he got from the original operation. He had a plastic plate screwed down, held in place by part of his jaw.

Not only has he gone through all of the above but he has 6 kids, too. Surely they are very proud of their dad's achievements and his resolve is on show now in this tournament.

Jim now works for the United States Army's Family and MWR Programs (FMWR), which helps families of U.S forces with all kinds of things including morale, welfare and recreational programs.

Harris Catches Bluff for Big Double Up

Nível 23 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Gerry Harris
Gerry Harris

Gregory Hawes raised to 100,000 from the cutoff and was three-bet to 250,000 by Gerry Harris on the button.

Hawes called and the duo saw a flop of {6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. The players both checked, but on the turn {a-Diamonds}, business picked up.

Hawes checked to Harris, who bet 200,000. Hawes then check-raised to 600,000 and with just 300,000 behind, Harris called.

On the river {7-Clubs}, Hawes moved in for Harris' last 300,000, and Harris called.

Hawes showed {10-Spades}{9-Spades} for a failed bluff, while Harris showed {a-Spades}{k-Spades} for top pair, top kicker to earn a healthy double-up, while Hawes still remains healthy with over a million chips.

Hawes Gets His Revenge and an Elimination

Nível 23 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Gregory Hawes
Gregory Hawes

Shortly after their big pot at table 629, an even bigger pot took place between Gregory Hawes and Gerry Harris, with Jose Lima getting caught in the crossfire.

Hawes raised under the gun to 100,000 and was called in early position by Harris. Lima then moved all in for 655,000 from middle position. Hawes then moved in for about a million and Harris called having both players covered.

Jose Lima: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Gregory Hawes: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Gerry Harris: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

The flop came {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, pairing Hawes' king to give him the lead. The {3-Clubs}{6-Hearts} turn and river brought no help to either of his opponents and Hawes took down a huge pot to vault over three million in chips.

Zolotow Eliminated in One-Two Punch

Nível 24 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Steve Zolotow
Steve Zolotow

Steve Zolotow has just been eliminated after losing a pair of hands.

He was left short-stacked with approximately 400,000 when he jammed in middle position with {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and was called by Derek Lacock with {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. The board came {3-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, bringing no help to the two-time bracelet winner and sending him to the rail.

Lacock and his tablemate Chad Layne were also kind enough to pass along the details of a hand prior to this that took the majority of Zolotow's chips, where Zolotow opened to 110,000 and was three-bet by Layne to 330,000. Zolotow then moved in for 1,100,000 and was snap-called by Layne with {a-}{a-}.

Zolotow was caught with {7-}{7-} and got no help, leaving him short-stacked for his imminent elimination at the hands of Lacock.

What's David Oppenheim Doing in this Tournament?!

Nível 26 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
David Oppenheim
David Oppenheim

While there are often players with similar or identical names to notable or outright famous poker players, a new one has been discovered in this tournament.

David Oppenheim, who is originally from the Seattle area but now lives in Las Vegas, raised some of the PokerNews staff's eyebrows when his name was seen on the seat draw for the day.

Speaking with the Poker Hall of Famer's namesake, he revealed that he's friends and roommates with Matthew Jewett who made a deep run in last year's Main Event, finishing 28th for just under $200,000.

While that other David Oppenheim is best known for his cash game prowess, this David Oppenheim, like his roommate, is no slouch in the tournament streets, with over $100,000 in cashes to his name and with under 100 players left in this event, he's on the verge of another decent score.
