Day 2 of the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Event #54: $500 Salute to Warriors began with 498 players returning from the 3,209-entry field. By the end of the night, just 21 players remained with James Todd and his stack of 20 million leading the way.

Todd got a good deal of his chips in the last level of the night when he scored a double elimination. It happened when Dennis Booze raised with tens, Michael Vaverka jammed with pocket queens, and Todd woke up with two black aces in the small blind. He reraised, Booze shoved, and Todd both called and held to vault up the counts.

Others to survive the night were Rigoberto Rodriguez (14,950,000), Todd Saffron (11,900,000), Elias Neto (9,200,000), poker vlogger Matt Vaughan (7,750,000), Richard Alati (5,225,000), Marco Petrusch (4,925,000), and Scott Shafman (2,625,000).

Dave Mark

David Mark shoved for his final 3,000,000 from under the gun and Zyad Qasem called from the small blind.

David Mark: {a-Clubs}{3-Spades}
Zyad Qasem: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Qasem took a huge lead on the {k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop but chop outs became available on the {q-Spades} turn.

The {q-Hearts} river, however, eliminated Mark and gave Qasem another big addition to his stack.

Qasem quite enjoyed the {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop to go way ahead.

Elias Neto opened for 700,000 from under the gun and Jonathan Skipworth shoved for 850,000 from early position. Nicholas Sena-Hopkins called from middle position and Neto tossed in an extra 150,000.

The flop came {j-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and both Neto and Sena-Hopkins tapped the table.

On the {10-Diamonds} turn, Neto put out a bet of 800,000 and Sena-Hopkins called.

The {q-Diamonds} river was also checked down.

Sena-Hopkins turned over {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, rivering a straight after turning a double gutter. Neto turned over {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a pair of tens.

Unfortunately for Skipworth, he completely missed with his {a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and he was eliminated.

Meir Avigal

Yuzu Wang raised to 160,000 in early position and was met with an all-in jam from a player in middle position for 975,000. Meir Avigal then moved over top for approximately 2,200,000 and Wang folded.

Opponent: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Meir Avigal: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Avigal was behind and in danger of dropping almost half of his stack, but the {4-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop gave him plenty of hope with a flush draw. The turn gave him exactly what he needed with the {2-Clubs}, and finally the {7-Clubs} just to solidify the win and send him up near four million chips.

What's David Oppenheim Doing in this Tournament?!

Nível 26 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
David Oppenheim
David Oppenheim

While there are often players with similar or identical names to notable or outright famous poker players, a new one has been discovered in this tournament.

David Oppenheim, who is originally from the Seattle area but now lives in Las Vegas, raised some of the PokerNews staff's eyebrows when his name was seen on the seat draw for the day.

Speaking with the Poker Hall of Famer's namesake, he revealed that he's friends and roommates with Matthew Jewett who made a deep run in last year's Main Event, finishing 28th for just under $200,000.

While that other David Oppenheim is best known for his cash game prowess, this David Oppenheim, like his roommate, is no slouch in the tournament streets, with over $100,000 in cashes to his name and with under 100 players left in this event, he's on the verge of another decent score.

Zolotow Eliminated in One-Two Punch

Nível 24 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Steve Zolotow
Steve Zolotow

Steve Zolotow has just been eliminated after losing a pair of hands.

He was left short-stacked with approximately 400,000 when he jammed in middle position with {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and was called by Derek Lacock with {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. The board came {3-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, bringing no help to the two-time bracelet winner and sending him to the rail.

Lacock and his tablemate Chad Layne were also kind enough to pass along the details of a hand prior to this that took the majority of Zolotow's chips, where Zolotow opened to 110,000 and was three-bet by Layne to 330,000. Zolotow then moved in for 1,100,000 and was snap-called by Layne with {a-}{a-}.

Zolotow was caught with {7-}{7-} and got no help, leaving him short-stacked for his imminent elimination at the hands of Lacock.

Hawes Gets His Revenge and an Elimination

Nível 23 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Gregory Hawes
Gregory Hawes

Shortly after their big pot at table 629, an even bigger pot took place between Gregory Hawes and Gerry Harris, with Jose Lima getting caught in the crossfire.

Hawes raised under the gun to 100,000 and was called in early position by Harris. Lima then moved all in for 655,000 from middle position. Hawes then moved in for about a million and Harris called having both players covered.

Jose Lima: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Gregory Hawes: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Gerry Harris: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}

The flop came {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, pairing Hawes' king to give him the lead. The {3-Clubs}{6-Hearts} turn and river brought no help to either of his opponents and Hawes took down a huge pot to vault over three million in chips.
