Hellmuth Goes For the Repeat; 121 Players Chasing O'Hara on Day 2 of Event #29

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Triumphant returns are the theme heading to Day 2 of Event #29: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw.

Phil Hellmuth returned from a week away and bagged up 121,000, just 121 players between him and back-to-back bracelets in this event. George Danzer, who has hardly played at the WSOP since winning Player of the Year in 2014 and hasn’t cashed in an event in six years, is back on a leaderboard with 100,000. Then there is Yanni Raz, the 2-7 rookie who liked the game so much, he decided to reenter last night and finished with a top-10 stack at 166,000.

Ian O’Hara leads the remaining 122 players, amassing a huge chip lead of 294,500, nearly 60,000 more than second-place Brandon Shack-Harris. He’ll be chased on Day 2 by the likes of Tom Schneider (207,500), Jake Schwartz (157,500), Mike Matusow (149,500), and Alex Foxen (127,500).

The plan, when Day 2 begins at 2 p.m. local time, is to play down to the final five players. First, however, the main goal of the surviving players is to make the money, which will come at 66th place. A min-cash will be worth $2,417, all the way up to the top prize of $127,809.

Play will begin on Level 11, with 1,000-2,000 blinds and a 3,000 big blind ante. There will be a 60-minute dinner break after Level 16, which should come around 8:30 p.m.

It was a record-smashing field of 437 entries that began the event. By the end of Day 2, there will be only five remaining. PokerNews will be on hand the entire way at Bally’s Event Center as Hellmuth chases bracelet No. 17 and 121 opponents try to stop him.

The blinds folded and Hui called.

O'Hara showed {9-}{5-}{3-}{2-}{2-} for a pair of deuces, while Hui picked off his bluff with {10-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, moving his stack over 100,000 after starting the day with one of the shortest stacks in the room.

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth raised to 5,000 from the cutoff and Louis Abronson called on the button. From the small blind, Roman Hrabec asked how much Hellmuth was playing behind before three-betting to 20,000.

Hellmuth called while Abronson quickly got out of the way. Hrabec took one, while Hellmuth discarded a queen.

After the draw, Hrabec announced he was all in, covering Hellmuth's remaining 22,500.

"Oh, I made a big hand here," Hellmuth said before shoving the rest of his stack in the middle and showing {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-}. Hrabec mucked his ten-low and the defending champion and 16-time bracelet winner doubled up.

"Mixed Game Specialist" Depaulo Eliminates Defending Champ Hellmuth

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,500, 3,500 ante
Ryan Depaulo
Ryan Depaulo

With a healthy stack on Day 2, popular vlogger and WSOP bracelet holder Ryan Depaulo, known more for his play in No-Limit Hold 'em tweeted this recently...

Well, he can now add busting the defending champion of this event and 16-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth to his growing mixed game resume.

Hellmuth raised in middle position and Depaulo moved all in from the button, slightly covering Hellmuth's roughly 90,000 chip stack.

Both players stood pat and the hands were revealed.

Phil Hellmuth: {10-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{2-}
Ryan Depaulo: {9-}{8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}

The win vaults Depaulo into the upper echelon of chip stacks in the room and likely calls for a "PARKOUR!" during the upcoming break.

Yosif Nawabi raised under the gun and got a call from Matthew Dames on the button. In the small blind, Greg Raymer shoved all in for around 100,000 and Nawabi called.

Dames went into the tank for a few moments before calling as both players stood pat.

Nawabi showed nine-eight-six as the 2004 Main Event champion flashed a ten-eight-seven. Raymer asked Nawabi how to spell his name before signing a fossil over to him and making his exit a few spots shy of the money.

Matusow Eliminated After Huge Three-Way Pot

Nível 15 : 2,500/5,000, 7,500 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

A huge pot just developed that saw a three-way all-in that left Mike Matusow on fumes and eliminated shortly after.

Frank Kassela raised to 14,000 in early position and was called by Max Kruse on the button. Mike Matusow then moved all in from the small blind for approximately 125,000 and was called by Kassela. Kruse then went into the tank and opted to call as well.

Matusow needed to draw one, Kasella stood pat, and Kruse drew one as well.

Matusow was drawing to an eight and drilled it, making {8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-}, which put him ahead of Kassela's {j-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{3-}.

Kruse however was yet to draw and was drawing live to a wheel {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, which he actually hit to scoop the pot.

Shortly after, now on fumes, Matusow got his last 9,500 in against Kenneth Po and couldn't outdraw his {10-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{2-}

Shack-Harris Clocks Himself, Then Busts

Nível 15 : 2,500/5,000, 7,500 ante
Brandon Shack-Harris
Brandon Shack-Harris

Kyle Miholich raised to 13,500 from early position and Ryan Leng and Brandon Shack-Harris came along from the blinds. Leng took two, Shack-Harris one, and Miholich stood pat.

Shack-Harris bet out 70,000 after the draw and Miholich responded by moving all in, placing a dog figurine on top of a stack of chips and easily covering Shack-Harris' last 115,000. Leng quickly folded as action went back on Shack-Harris.

The two-time bracelet winner went into the tank for nearly five minutes, apologizing to the table. "Wow, I can't believe I'm thinking about folding this," he said.

Shack-Harris eventually asked that the clock be called on himself. As the tournament floor was counting down to zero, he eventually committed the chips and Miholich showed him {7-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}.

Shack-Harris flashed an eight-six as he tapped the table and made his way to the payout desk.
