The Final Round of Event #48: $1,500 Shootout

Welcome to the final day of Event #48: $1,500 Shootout.

On Day 1 there was a total of 800 entrants dispersed over 80 ten-handed tables for Round 1. There were many recognizable players in the field to kick things off such as Tony Dunst, Jeff Gross, Adrian Mateos, Kelly Minkin, James Woods, Cary Katz, and many more.

The total prize pool is $1,068,000 making the first-place prize $204,063 paired with the coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

Only 80 players defeated their respective tables to advance to Day 2. A handful of WSOP champions advanced to Round 2 including Jared Jaffee, Taylor Paur, Brian Yoon, Joseph Cheong, and Ron McMillen. There were ten eight-handed tables to start the day, but only ten players would advance the final round.

The players advancing to the final round are two-time WSOP bracelet winner Ari Engel (1,965,000), Orson Young (1,975,000), AP Garza (1,975,000), David Tran (1,970,000), Jonathan Betancur (1,970,000), Sohale Kalili (1,970,000), Gershon Distenfeld (1,970,0000), Craig Trost (1,965,000),Thomas Boivin (1,965,000), and Johan Schumacher (1,980,000) making this his second final table of the 2021 WSOP.

All remaining players have had relatively successful tournament poker careers with the exception of Jonathan Betancur with this being his first WSOP event ever.

Day 3 will resume today October 27 at 12 p.m. local time. Each player will begin the day with roughly the same starting stack having just over 60 big blinds. Play will pick up at 15,000/30,000 blinds with a 30,000 big blind ante. The levels will last 40-minutes with a 15-minute break every three levels. They will play down to a winner.

Craig Trost opened to 70,000 from early position and Gershon Distenfeld three-bet to 230,000 from middle position. Action folded back to Trost who four-bet to 750,000. Distenfeld then jammed in his stack of about 2,000,000.

Trost joked, "Well, I hope it's not a cold deck." He put in the call while appearing to expect the worst.

It was a classic cooler to start the day. The board ran out {10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs} to send Trost to the rail and give Distenfeld an early double.

Garza ran into Tran's big blind Big Slick and needed help. The {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop left him drawing slim to a runner-runner flush, but he was dead on the turn as the {j-Clubs} and {6-Diamonds} completed the board.

Johan Schumacher opened to 160,000 in the hijack and Thomas Boivin jammed in his stack of 1,300,000 from the small blind. Schumacher called and the hands were revealed.

Both players had similar stacks and they found themselves against each other in a classic flip.

The dealer spread the {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop. The {7-Spades} turn left Boivin one card away from a double, but the {q-Diamonds} spiked the river, and Schumacher breathed a sigh of relief. The two players from Belgium embraced as Boivin took his exit.

It folded back to Engel who took some time before moving all in for just under 2,000,000. Distenfeld snap-called.

The {j-Clubs} came on the turn and Tran led for a bet 600,000. Schumacher counted his stack before moving all-in for 1,770,000 and Tran snap-folded.

The flop came {6-Clubs}{k-Spades}{a-Diamonds} and the action checked to the turn which brought the {10-Diamonds}. The action checked through again.

The river was the {8-Hearts}. Schumacher led for a bet of 250,000 before Betancur raised to 650,000. Schumacher looked confused but he called the raise.

Betancur tabled {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for the rivered set of eights. Schumacher mucked.
