Tam Nguyen Sits Atop the Day 1c Leaderboard; JC Tran and Phil Hellmuth Still in Contention

Nível 20 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante

Day 1c, the last of three starting flights in Event 84: $1,500 The Closer No-Limit Hold'em, has come to an end and 121 of the original field 1,613 players have moved on to Day 2. Thanks to winning a massive pot on the last hand of the day Tam Nguyen bagged 1,284,000 and looks to be the chipleader at the end of Day 1c. Others who bagged impressive chipstacks included Steve Yea (924,000), Wai Kiat Lee (826,000), Kevin Killeen (760,000) and Fabrizio Gonzalez (754,000).

The day started off with 356 players registered by the time the cards went in the air, but with the combination of the unlimited re-entry format and the fact that this event offered players the opportunity to grab one of the final gold bracelets of the 2019 WSOP, that number grew to 1,613 by the time registration closed. That final number created a Day 1c prize pool of $2,177,550. After the bubble burst early in level 18, just 242 players had made the money with a min-cash worth $2,254.

Numerous players, including notables such as Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer, Pierre Neuville and James Calderaro, took full advantage of the unlimited re-entries option and fired several bullets, while others such as Barbara Enright, Mike Shariati, actor and comedian Brad Garrett, gold medal-winning boxer Audley Harrison and three-time Superbowl Champion Richard Seymour gave it one shot, but all fell short of cashing. However, numerous notables, including Loni Harwood, Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Kelly Minkin, Martin Zamani and Stan Jablonski, did find their way to the payout desk, while Erik Cajelais (599,000), Justin Young (466,000), Pat Lyons (411,000), Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier (388,000), JC Tran (281,000) and a short-stacked Phil Hellmuth (142,000) are just a few of the familiar names that bagged to return on Day 2.

The 121 survivors from Day 1c will join the 75 players that moved on from the first two starting flights, making a total of 196 players that will continue their quest for the gold WSOP bracelet on Monday, July 15th at noon local time. They are scheduled to play down to a winner, and although it's not clear at this time exactly what the Day 2 min-cash will be, the one thing that is certain is that they are chasing the WSOP gold bracelet and six-figure score.

The PokerNews team will be on the floor to cover all the action from when the first is dealt until the last card hits the felt and the newest WSOP champion is crowned.

Leng Finds Rockets

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Ryan Leng (from a previous event)
Ryan Leng (from a previous event)

There was a 59,000 all in and a call in front before Ryan Leng announced his all in over the top for 82,000. Everyone else got out the way and the flat caller made up the difference.

Ryan Leng: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Opponent 1: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent 2: {2-Spades}{2-Clubs}

The {3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop looked nice and safe for Leng but the {j-Diamonds} turn brought the bigger stack a bunch more outs with an open-ended straight and flush draws. The river bricked the {7-Spades} and with the blinds and ante too, Leng got a full triple up putting him in a good position as the bubble approaches.

Garrett Eliminated by Kolev

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Brad Garrett
Brad Garrett

After losing most of his chips just now, Brad Garrett got up to leave the table before being called back as he had 2,000 still in play, which was not quite the value of a big blind, Garrett announced he was going all in blind in the next hand.

Boris Kolev was the player to open the action, making it 5,500 in middle position. One other player called before Garrett put his last chips in and there was another call on the button, making it four-handed to the flop. Garrett had the opportunity to quintuple his stack.

The flop was the {8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and Kolev check-raised over the button's 15,000 bet, which he and the other player folded. It meant Kolev took the side pot and Kolev and Garrett tabled their cards for the main.

Boris Kolev: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Brad Garrett: {q-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Both players had hit top pair but Garrett needed a deuce to stay in the game. Neither the {5-Hearts} turn or {q-Spades} river obliged him and he headed towards his car for the second time.

Seymour Scores Double Knockout

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Richard Seymour From a Previous Event
Richard Seymour From a Previous Event

Action picked up on the flop of {a-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{9-Spades} and Jeremy Koehler had already moved his last few chips into the middle. Pierre Neuville moved all in behind and Richard Seymour, who had both players easily covered, made the call.

Jeremy Koehler: {8-Spades}{3-Spades}
Pierre Neuville: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Richard Seymour: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}

The {9-Clubs} turn and {4-Spades} river were of no help to Neuville and Koehler and Seymour scored the double knockout. Koehler seemed to take the bustout in stride and asked to take a picture with Seymour who obliged.

After a Day 1a attracted 463 runners on Friday and Day 1b drew 724 players to the felt, today sees the third and final flight of the Closer get underway. Yesterday 45 players remained in contention after the bell rang at the end of Level 20 and they join the 30 survivors still in with a shot from the day before.

The tournament schedule follows exactly the same format as the first two flights, with 30-minute levels on the clock and play wrapping up after 20 levels have been completed. Breaks will follow the same format too, with a 20-minute recess after every four levels, except for the 75-minute dinner break that takes place at the end of Level 12 (around 5:40 p.m). The end of the dinner break will also signal the close of late registration (around 6:55pm).

Those who manage to find a bag at the end of today will combine with the 75 hopefuls from Day 1a & 1b on Monday 15th July at noon, when Day 2 gets underway. It is the final day of the event, meaning play will continue until a winner is crowned.
