One of the most prestigious events of the 2019 World Series of Poker (WSOP) has kicked off at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and the four-card specialists showcased their talents on Day 1 of the Event #45: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller.

The previous four editions of this very event have seen a bigger field emerge year-after-year and the fifth installment is on track to continue that trend thanks to 221 entries within the first ten 60-minute levels. The record so far stands at 230 entries and that number is within reach to be surpassed, as the registration period remains open for the first two levels and following break on Day 2 until approximately 4.15 p.m. local time.

Defending champion and reigning WSOP Player of the Year Shaun Deeb, who narrowly missed out on his fifth bracelet during the 2019 WSOP so far, made it through with a top ten stack of 518,500 after entering mid-way through the day and spinning up his stack. On the way there, he scored a crucial double through Tyler Smith when his top two pair (and third pair, too) held up against top and bottom pair as well as the nut flush draw of Smith.

Ultimately, it was a close race for the overnight lead and Keith Lehr beat Paul Volpe to the top spot among 128 survivors after bagging up 692,000. Volpe follows close behind with 682,000 and the third-biggest stack belongs to Firas Sadou (625,000). Other notables with big stacks after Day 1 include Dario Sammartino (595,500), Ludovic Geilich (590,000), Alexey Makarov (584,500), Niko Soininen (574,500), Ka Kwan Lau (492,500), Noah Schwartz (441,000), and Isaac Baron (435,000).

The first-ever WSOP $25,000 PLO High Roller Anthony Zinno advanced with a stack of 239,000. James Calderaro, who claimed the gold bracelet in and finished 4th one year later, was among the more than two dozen players who took advantage of the single re-entry and failed to bag up chips for Day 2.

Big names that won't be returning for Day 2 anymore are Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Johannes Becker, Warwick Mirzikinian, Artem Babakhanyan, Phil Galfond, Chance Kornuth, and 2019 Player of the Year contender Dan Zack. The elimination of Mizrachi in fact vaulted Lehr into the top spot when his flush draw and gutshot got there. Mizrachi called all in after the river, was shown the nut straight and mucked, mentioning in table chat he had a set of sixes.

All those that only busted once or haven't even taken part yet can still enter in the first two 60-minute levels on Day 2 and it is expected that another record for the PLO High Roller will be set.

Day 2 will resume at 2 p.m. local time with blinds of 1,500/3,000, which provides new entries 50 big blinds worth in the first level of play. Once the registration closes, the prize pool information will be released and the second of four tournament days is expected to whittle down the field close to the money bubble as another ten levels of 60 minutes each are scheduled.

The PokerNews team will be on the floor to provide all the action of the most-expensive PLO event of the 2019 WSOP until a champion is crowned.

Nível 9 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Joni Jouhkimainen
Joni Jouhkimainen

It all started rather innocent with a raise to 5,500 in the cutoff by James Chen and a call by Joni Jouhkimainen in the big blind. What followed were three barrels by Chen on the {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop for 7,000, on the {j-Spades} turn for 20,000 and {8-Diamonds} river for 70,000. Jouhkimainen check-called the first two bets and check-raised to 205,000 after the final bet to force a fold from Chen.

Deeb Doubles Through Smith

Nível 8 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Joining the action on the {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} turn with some 20,000 in the pot, Tyler Smith bet 13,000 and defending champion Shaun Deeb raised the pot. Smith wasted little time before moving all in and Deeb carefully counted his remaining stack of 108,900 total. Eventually, Deeb made the call and the cards were on their back.

Shaun Deeb: {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Tyler Smith: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}

The {5-Spades} on the river was a blank and Deeb doubled, while Smith remained on a big stack.

Mirzikinian Eliminated by Mizrachi's Quads

Nível 7 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

Warwick Mirzikinian may very well be the first player to bust for the second time and won't be allowed to re-enter anymore due to the single re-entry option after he just clashed with Michael Mizrachi.

They got it in after a {j-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop with Mirzikinian at risk holding the {j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for top two. Mizrachi had {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for bottom set and the {5-Hearts} turn instantly left Mirzikinian drawing dead, which made the {k-Clubs} river a formality.

Jachtmann Eliminated by Volpe

Paul Volpe earlier in the WSOP
Paul Volpe earlier in the WSOP

In the last hand of the level, a cutoff raise to 2,500 and a button call resulted in a three-bet to 10,500 by Jan-Peter Jachtmann in the small blind. Paul Volpe in the big blind squeezed to 32,000 and the action folded back to Jachtmann, who eventually called.

The flop brought {q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Jachtmann checked, which prompted a pot-sized bet of 69,000 by Volpe. Jachtmann carefully counted his remaining stack, around 81,000, and took several minutes before announcing all in. Volpe called and the cards were turned over.

Jan-Peter Jachtmann: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Paul Volpe: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}

The {9-Spades} turn and {7-Hearts} river run out failed to improve Jachtmann and he was eliminated on his first bullet.

Martini Triples Up in Three-Way All In

Nível 5 : 400/800, 0 ante
Julien Martini
Julien Martini

The cards of Julien Martini were already in the muck as the far bigger side pot was sorted out between Henrik Hecklen and Tom Hu with their cards still tabled.

Hu held {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Hecklen the {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs} with Hecklen scoring a double through Hu for 114,000 with two pair on a board of {9-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

According to Martini, Hu had raised and the Frenchman flat-called from one seat over with {q-Spades}{10-}{9-}{8-Spades}, Hecklen then raised the pot to 11,000 and Hu called. What followed was the jam by Martini, Hecklen raised the pot and Hu reraised the pot to create the massive three-way all in with the better end for Martini and Hecklen.

On a board of {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}, Michael Mizrachi bet out 26,000 and Jonathan Abdellatif called in the cutoff.

The river landed the {10-Hearts} and Mizrachi announced he was all in for roughly his last 40,000. Abdellatif instantly called.

Mizrachi tabled just his {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} for the nut full house.

Abdellatif revealed his {k-Spades}{10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for rivered quads to eliminate the five-time WSOP bracelet winner from the Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller.
