Event #39: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout Gets Underway at 11 a.m.

Ben Maya
Ben Maya

At 11 a.m. local time, Event #39: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout will begin with the first of three rounds that will take place over the course of the next three days. Last year’s champion Ben Maya from Israel won his first bracelet by beating Belgian hopeful Thomas Boivin heads-up. The tournament had 1,025 entries that created a total prize pool of $1,383,750. Maya walked away with the coveted gold WSOP bracelet and the first-place prize of $257,764.

Other notable players on the final table last year were Tim West, Alex Rocha, Steve Foutty, Paul Michaelis and Jonathan Little. They all have been spotted in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino already and are expected to show up to try and improve on their previous finishes. In 2017, Day 1 started with 120 tables with each winner locking in a cash and advancing to the second round on Day 2.

Players will start with 7,500 in chips. Stacks will be in play from the start and blinded off into the well for players that register late. The late registration period will be open until approximately 1:15 p.m. A 15-minute break will take place after every three levels. Levels last 40-minutes each and play will continue until each table has one winner bagging their chips for Day 2.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be there from the start until the final card has been dealt so make sure to follow the Shootout updates right here!

Hellmuth Takes Out the Opposition

Nível 6 : 150/300, 50 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth has just taken down the first round of the shootout and is the third player to do so.

It began with a min-raise by Hellmuth and a call from his opponent.

{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

On the flop, it went check, a 900 continuation from Hellmuth, a 2,200 raise, a 4,100 three-bet by Hellmuth, and finally an all in for around 10,000, which was called.

Phil Hellmuth {k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Opponent {6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}

It was top two pair for the 14-time bracelet winner and he was in pretty good shape.

The {6-Hearts}{a-Clubs} turn and river bricked and Hellmuth locked up a cash and will take 65,400 through to Day 2. He finished in (almost) record time, which is quite different to the last time he played a shootout tournament, where he was one of the last to finish the day.

Table #83 Update

Nível 8 : 250/500, 75 ante
Taylor Paur
Taylor Paur

Taylor Paur and Dylan Linde's table was playing four-handed when Daniel Sprung raised to 1,200 from the button. Paur, sitting in the small blind, three-bet by putting a stack of yellow T$1,000 chips in, which covered both James McKay in the big blind and Sprung. McKay looked at his cards and laughed. He called for the 2,825 he had in front of him. Sprung took a bit longer but then folded.

James McKay: {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Taylor Paur: {K-Spades}{J-Clubs}

The flop came {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} to give Paur two pair. The turn brought them the {A-Spades} so McKay suddenly had another lease on life, but the {9-Diamonds} on the turn was a brick and McKay was out of the shootout.

Vlad Darie in an earlier event
Vlad Darie in an earlier event

Vlad Darie got it in with the best of it with {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} against {k-Clubs}{j-Spades}.

Both players connected with the {a-Spades}{2-Clubs}{k-Spades} flop but it moved Darie further into the lead. The {2-Diamonds} turn meant that there were only two kings for Darie to dodge. It was a {7-Diamonds} brick on the river and Darie takes 73,200 forward to Day 2.

A Cruel Runout Sees Yam Come Out on Top

Nível 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Edward Yam
Edward Yam

Grant Elmer and Edward Yam have been battling it out for quite some time. There have been ups and downs on both sides and right when the stacks had leveled out, they both found a premium hand and there was no way all the chips weren't going into the middle.

Elmer opened to 4,500 and Yam moved all-in for 34,100, which just had Elmer's 32,000 covered.

Edward Yam {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Grant Elmer {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

The flop brought out {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{j-Spades}, which put Elmer well into the lead. The {3-Hearts} turn was no good to Yam but the {q-Spades} river was. It was elation for Yam but huge disappointment for Elmer, with what was a very cruel runout.

Yam is the final player to make it through to Day 2 and he will be taking 66,700 chips with him.
