Butzhammer Tops Tough Day 1 Razz Field

Nível 10 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Thomas Butzhammer
Thomas Butzhammer

Day 1 of Event #18: $10,000 Seven Card Razz Championship has come to a conclusion with Thomas Butzhammer leading the field.

Not only was today the biggest buy-in Razz tournament in WSOP history, but not since 2003 have we seen one over the $5,000 buy-in mark. More amazingly is that today marked the first time since 1977 that more than two Razz tournaments have been run in the same series.

Players from near and far took to the felt as a better-than-expected 112 players formed a $1,052,800 prizepool that ensured $294,792 and a WSOP gold bracelet was reserved for the victor. As the likes of Michael and Robert Mizrachi, Billy Baxter, Todd Brunson, Chris Tryba, Calvin Anderson, Josh Arieh, Shawn Buchanan, John Hennigan and Phil Ivey all hit the rail, approximately 74 players would survive with Thomas Butzhammer bagging an impressive 141,300 in chips.

Snapping on his heels include Todd Dakake (136,400) while Brian Hastings (92,700), Eric Rodawig (81,700), Dan Shak (73,100) and Wade Townsend (72,200) are also amongst the chip leaders. Matt Glantz (69,400), Daniel Negreanu (66,100), Brandon Shack-Harris (70,900), Ted Forrest (30,300) and Doyle Brunson (27,500) are just a few of those that have survived into Day 2.

Play is set to resume at 2:00 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday afternoon with the PokerNews Live Reporting Team providing extensive coverage live from the Amazon Room as we look to play down to the money-paying top 16 and then to the final table.

A short-stacked Phil Ivey found himself all in against Scott Seiver.

Partying With Bill Chen and Doing The Thing

Nível 10 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Bill Chen
Bill Chen

"I wanna party with Bill Chen!" announced Tom Schneider proudly.

Schneider then looked to our PokerNews reporter and asked, "Do you want me to party with Bill Chen?"

He then turned back towards the table and continued, "Cause I wanna party with Bill Chen. We're going to be on the dancefloor doing the thing. Whatever that thing is!"

Table 364 is currently having the time of their lives as they are into the third round of beers. David Oppenheim asked the waiter to deliver the rounds every 15 minutes, and so far he is yet to fail.

A few other players around the room are also receiving alcoholic beverages, but there is no chance they are having as much fun as the players on table 364.

Ashby Silenced by Baker

Nível 9 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Richard Ashby
Richard Ashby

Catching the action on fifth street, David "ODB" Baker bet out 2,000 and Richard Ashby raised all in for his last 3,100. With the action on Brandon Shack-Harris, he raised to 5,100 and Baker made the call before calling down Shack-Harris on sixth and seventh streets.

Ashby: (X-X) / {8-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{7-Spades}{K-Diamonds} / (X)
Shack-Harris: (X-X) / {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts} / (X)
Baker: (X-X) / {K-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} / (X)

Shack-Harris announced he had an eight-seven, and with it Baker tabled his {A-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades} for a eight-six. Ashby and his {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts} was sent flying to the muck as the Brit headed to the rail.

Chidwick Back from the Dead; Friedman Busts

Nível 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Perry Friedman
Perry Friedman

Stephen Chidwick was down to as low as 3,000 in chips, and this tournament didn't look like it was going to work out for the young British grinder. Despite some rather unfortunate run outs of the cards and pots that he watched get pushed the other way, Chidwick hasn't given up yet. In fact, he's worked his stack back into the black with 35,000 in chips.

Here are two recent hands involving Chidwick:

Bill Chen: (X-X) / {3-}{Q-}{5-}{9-} / (X)
Chidwick: (X-X) / {2-}{A-}{4-}{7-} / (X)
Perry Friedman: (X-X) / {7-}{10-}{3-}{6-} / (X)

On this first hand, Chidwick led with a bet on fourth street, Friedman called, and Chen called. On fifth, Chidwick led again, Friedman called, and Chen called.

On sixth street, Chidwick bet out, Friedman raised, Chen called, and then Chidwick reraised. Friedman had 1,200 behind and called all in for 4,400 total, then Chen called to close the action.

With 800 in the side pot between Chen and Chidwick, the dealer pitched out seventh street to all three players. Chidwick bet, and Chen folded. Chidwick showed {6-}{4-}{3-} for a six smooth. Friedman showed {A-}{A-}{5-} and was eliminated from the tournament.

Chidwick won that pot, and Chen lost it, but on the next hand it would be Chen taking some chips back from his table mate.

Chen: (X-X) / {8-}{A-}{4-}{5-} / (X)
Chidwick: (X-X) / {6-}{4-}{5-}{5-} / (X)

Picking up the action in this hand on fourth street, Chidwick bet, and Chen called. Then on fifth street, the same action occurred before Chen took the lead on sixth street after Chidwick paired up. He led out there, and Chidwick called to head to seventh.

After the final card, both players checked.

Chen showed a nine with {9-}{5-}{A-}, and Chidwick mucked his hand.

As a result of all of this, with Friedman being eliminated, Chidwick sat on 35,000 and Chen ended with 61,500.

Nick Schulman

"Ofir is about to go aces, quads and quads against me. He has aces, trips and four sixes right now." announced Nick Schulman as he played Open Face Chinese on his iPhone against Ofir Mor.

"Oh my god, he made it! I raise!" angrily said Schulman as he completed to 800.

Mohsin Charania called, and then called on fourth before both players checked it down.

Schulman: (X-X) / {4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} / (X)
Charania: (X-X) / {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades} / (X)

Bronshtein Takes a Big Chunk from Ivey

Nível 8 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Nine-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Phil Ivey began the day chasing that 10th piece of WSOP hardware and moving in the right direction. He was up over 50,000 in chips early, but has since fallen back below starting stack. After losing this recent pot to Yuval Bronshtein where he couldn't beat a six, Ivey dropped back to just 12,000 in chips.

Ivey: (X-X) / {A-}{5-}{3-}{J-} / (X)
Scott Seiver: (X-X) / {2-}{Q-}{8-}fold
Bronshtein: (X-X) / {7-}{5-}{3-}{K-} / (X)

Picking up the action on fourth street, Ivey led with a bet, and both of his opponents made the call to see fifth street. After the dealer pitched the next card, Ivey bet, Seiver folded, and Bronshtein called. After sixth street, Ivey fired another bet, and Bronshtein called.

"Give me a dark bet one time," said Bronshtein as the dealer burned before tossing each player his seventh street card. Ivey didn't react, nor did he fire a bet in the dark.

After seventh was received face down, Ivey checked, Bronshtein bet, and Ivey tank-called.

"Six," said Bronshtein, as he turned over {6-}{4-}{2-}.

Ivey couldn't beat it, and his hand hit the muck without display. Bronshtein moved to 82,000 in chips.

Todd Brunson (from Event 10)
Todd Brunson (from Event 10)

Todd Brunson was all in against Mike Wattel and Scott Seiver as the two active players continued to exchange bets until each player's board read as follows:

Brunson: (X-X) / {10-Spades}{K-Spades}{9-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} / (X)
Wattel: (X-X) / {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Clubs} / (X)
Seiver: (X-X) / {5-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{J-Hearts}{9-Hearts} / (X)

Seiver tabled his {8-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Spades} for a nine-eight as Wattel flashed his {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for three pair while Brunson flashed an assortment of cards and mucked before heading to the rail.
