Hellmuth to Make Another Run at 14th Bracelet in Event #15

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Earlier this week, Phil Hellmuth was denied his 14th bracelet when he finished runner-up to Ted Forrest in Event #7: $1,500 Seven-Card Razz. It was a heart-breaking defeat for the "Poker Brat," but he didn't stay down long as he's making yet another run at gold here in the 2014 World Series of Poker Event #15: $3,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em.

Two days ago this tournament began with 810 players, but now just 15 remain with Heinz Kamutzki leading the way with 841,000. However, if he hopes to capture the $508,640 first-place prize he'll need to overcome some stiff competition. Of course there is Hellmuth, who is currently sixth in chips with 491,000, but also Davidi Kitai (815,000), Pratyush Buddiga (760,000), Gordon Vayo (483,000), Ryan Olisar (444,000), Vladimir Geshkenbein (178,000), and Tony Ruberto (98,000).

Coincidentally, today California Chrome will be going for horse racing's Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes (the last was way back in 1978), and one of poker's few Triple Crown winners (WSOP bracelet, World Poker Tour title, and European Poker Tour title) is still in the field. We're spreaking of Kitai, who woke up with pocket kings in the last hand of Day 2 to eliminate Jake Toole in 16th place and cripple Ruberto.

Here's how things stack up at the start of Day 3:

Alen Bilic Eliminated in 15th Place ($19,547)

Alen Bilic

Alen Bilic is the day's first casualty, busting at the hands of John Andress.

Andress opened to 20,000 and quickly called when Bilic three-bet all-in from one seat over for 105,000 in total.

Bilic: {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Andress: {A-Spades}{J-Spades}

Andress had Bilic dominated and his stayed ahead on the {9-Spades}{J-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} flop. The turn was the {A-Clubs} and it was followed onto the green WSOP-branded felt by the {2-Clubs}. With that, Bilic busted and we are down to 14 in Event #15.

Artem Metalidi Eliminated in 14th Place ($19,547)

Bill Burford had raised from the cutoff and faced a three-bet to 47,000 from Artem Metalidi on the button. Both blinds folded and Burford reraised to 147,000.

Metalidi went deep into the tank for almost two minutes before emerging with an all-in bet of around 600,000.

"I hope this isn't a big show with aces, I call," said Burford.

Burford: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

Metalidi: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Metalidi looked like a man who knew his tournament was over. It basically was on the {4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} flop and was 100% over when the {3-Spades} landed on the turn. The inconsequential {5-Hearts} completed the board, the hand and Metalidi was gone in 14th place.

Pratyush Buddiga Eliminated in 13th Place ($19,547)

Nível 22 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante

Pratyush Buddiga

It wasn't a good day for Pratyush Buddiga. A little over an hour ago he began play third in chips out of 15 players, and now he finds himself on the rail in 13th place.

Buddiga lost some big hands to drop to the short stack, and he shoved his last 105,000 under the gun. Davidi Kitai was in the big blind and asked for a count before making the call.

Buddiga: {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Kitai: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Buddiga had some kicker issues, but the {a-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop gave him some hope with a flush draw. The {2-Spades} turn put out some chop opportunities, but neither the flush nor chop would come in after the {7-Spades} blanked on the river.

Buddiga's exit in 13th place means we are down to the final 12 players, which brings about the two-table redraw. We'll have the new seating assignments for you shortly.

Gabriel Andrade Eliminated in 12th Place ($25,164)

Nível 22 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Gabriel Andrade - 12th Place
Gabriel Andrade - 12th Place

Phil Hellmuth and Gabriel Andrade had choice words for one another earlier in the tournament, but the two-table redraw separated them. There was a chance they would be reunited, but any hope of that happening just came to an end courtesy of Heinz Kamutzki.

It happened when Kamutzki opened for 24,000 in the hijack and Andrade shipped all in for 100,000 from the small blind. The big folded and Kamutzki made a quick call.

Kamutzki: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Andrade: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Andrade was in trouble with his inferior kicker, and the man prone to practice his golf swing in between hands stood to watch his fate. The {5-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop provided no help, but the {5-Spades} turn did as Andrade picked up both a flush draw and chop outs. Unfortunately for him the {10-Hearts} blanked on the river and he was sent back to the driving range.

"I'm Not Classy"

Nível 22 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Vladimir Geshkenbein
Vladimir Geshkenbein

In the last hand of the level a heated hand went down between Vladimir Geshkenbein and Phil Hellmuth.

It began when Hellmuth opened for 37,000 from the cutoff and Davidi Kitai called from the small blind.

"Well, time again," Geshkenbein said as he reached for a toy space gun he brought with him. "All In."

Geshkenbein then fired the gun, which makes various noises. He and Hellmuth had sparred before, and Hellmuth asked for a count. It was 252,000, and Hellmuth said, "Call." Kitai folded.

"What do you have?" Geshkenbein asked.

"Ace-three," Hellmuth said and tabled the {a-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}.

"You're good," Geshkenbein said sheepishly. He waited a few seconds and then slowrolled Hellmuth with the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}. Geshkenbein continued to rib Hellmuth as the flop came down {j-Spades}{6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}. The {5-Spades} turn gave the Russian pause as Hellmuth picked up an open-ended straight draw, but it didn't come in as the {4-Hearts} blanked on the river.

"Oh no, Phil," Geshkenbein continued.

"You gotta show some class when you win one, kid," a clearly annoyed Hellmuth said.

"I'm not classy," Geshkenbein said as he continued to taunt Hellmuth.

"I'm going to bust you. I promise you that. Look me in the eyes, I'm going to bust you," Hellmuth said. There is certainly no love lost between these two players.

Vladimir Geshkenbein has been eliminated in 10th place at the hands of John Andress.

Davidi Kitai raised to 40,000 on the button, Geshkenbein three-bet all-in for 275,000 from the small blind and Andress flat-called from the big blind. Kitai flashed the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} as he folded.

"Do you have a pair?" asked Geshkenbein.

"No," came the answer.

Andress: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}

Geshkenbein: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}

"Great, and he [Kitai] folded a queen," said Geshkenbein.

Andress took the lead on the {A-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop and his hand remained best as the {10-Diamonds} and {10-Clubs} completed the board and ended Geshkenbein's participation in Event #15.

Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth is without a doubt the most decorated player in World Series of Poker history. With 13 gold bracelets, two WSOP Main Event titles (one in Europe), 100 cashes, and a membership in the Poker Hall of Fame, one cannot argue against his record.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Hellmuth's 1989 WSOP Main Event victory. It’s also the summer of his 50th birthday. In a recent feature interview, PokerNews' Rich Ryan sat down with the man often referred to as the "Poker Brat" to discuss his win in 1989, the past 25 years of poker and his life, and much more.

Phil Hellmuth's quest to win his 14th WSOP bracelet continues as he has busted from Event #15.

Hellmuth opened to 80,000 from under the gun, leaving himself with less than 50,000 behind. Gordon Vayo was in the big blind and when it folded to him, he moved all-in. Hellmuth called and the cards flipped onto their backs.

Hellmuth: {A-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Vayo: {A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

The spectators on the rail leaned in to try get a better view of the board which run out {K-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} to improve Vayo to a pair of sevens and to bust Hellmuth in eighth place.

"Eight flips in a row I've lost," said Hellmuth as he exited the tournament area.

Zachary Korik - 6th place finisher
Zachary Korik - 6th place finisher

Hand #31: Zachary Korik open-shoved from the small with what turned out to be {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Gordon Vayo called from the big blind with {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}.

The {A-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop did not improve either player and Korik looked in trouble. The {Q-Spades} turn kept Vayo in front and left Korik needing a seven, nine or ten to win the hand and stay in the tournament. The {3-Diamonds} fell on the river, which was not one of Korik’s outs and he busted in sixth place, a finish good for $62,690.
