Gross Doubles to Avoid Bubble, Ivey Misses Chance to Secure Cash

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
Phil Ivey could have burst the bubble with big slick, but he laid down and allowed Christophe Gross to double through
Phil Ivey could have burst the bubble with big slick, but he laid down and allowed Christophe Gross to double through

Phil Ivey opened to 2,400 from under the gun, and Alejandro Chongwong flatted from the button, only to see Ryan Schoonbaert three-bet to 10,600 out of the small blind.

Next to act, Christophe Gross four-bet jammed for his last 30,000 or so, leaving Phil Ivey to tank long and hard in the next seat over. With the next player eliminated falling just short of the cash, Ivey took his time to assess the situation, but he finally folded his hand in frustration, pushing the cards down into the felt as he slid them to the dealer.

Chongwong decided to lay down as well, and Schoonbaert made a quick call with his {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}, only to find his pocket pair to be second best against Gross' {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}.

The final board ran out {3-Clubs}{a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Gross doubled through with his ladies, leaving Ivey to lament the fact that he had tossed {a-}{k-} into the muck.

"I had ace-king..." he told Chongwong from across the table. "What you have, ace-queen?"

"I had jacks," replied Chongwong, confirming that a massive preflop cooler — and the bursting of the money bubble — had been avoided thanks to two disciplined folds.

Brutal Turn Sends Ivey to the Rail

Nível 16 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey opened for 8,000 from under the gun and Anton Smirnov called from the small blind. The flop was {k-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades} and Smirnov checked. Ivey bet 8,000 and Smirnov made the call. The turn was the {10-Spades} and again Smirnov checked. Ivey fired 20,000 and Smirnov called.

The river was the {2-Diamonds} and Smirnov checked to Ivey for a thrid time. Ivey stacked his last 46,000 and pushed it toward the pot. Smirnov called and Ivey turned over {6-Clubs}{6-Spades} for a set, but it wasn't good enough as Smirnov tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for a higher set.

Ivey's deep run has come to an end and the nine-time bracelet winner is still searching for that elusive first WSOP hold'em victory.

Alejandro Chongwong Eliminated in 18th Place ($6,211)

Nível 16 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Alejandro Chongwong
Alejandro Chongwong

Alejandro Chongwong opened to 11,000 from early position and Ryan Schoonbaert raised to 25,000 from the small blind. Chongwong quickly pushed all in and Schoonbaert just as quickly called with {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. Chongwong needed big help as he tabled {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}, but the flop of {2-Spades}{10-Hearts}{a-Hearts} all but sealed it.

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Chongwong headed to the payout desk.

Raymond Matthaei opened to 13,000 from early position and Gregory Kolo three-bet to 43,000 from the button, which was enough to put Matthaei all in.

Matthaei made the call and tabled {7-Spades}{7-Hearts} versus the {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} of Kolo. The board ran out {5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{3-Spades}{k-Hearts} and Matthaei is gone.

Scott Eskenazi Eliminated in 14th Place ($7,812)

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Scott Eskenazi
Scott Eskenazi

Scott Eskenazi was left nursing a tiny stack containing 17,000 after his {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} ran into David Martirosyan's {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} in an all-in preflop confrontation. The board ran {10-Spades}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Eskenazi had to hand over 98,000 of his stack.

A couple of hands later, he was all in from under the gun for those 17,000 chips and Ahmed Amin reraised him to 28,000. The other active players folded, Eskenazi opened {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and saw that his opponent held {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

By the river the board had run {J-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and with that Eskenazi was done and dusted.

Brian Horwitz Eliminated in 12th Place ($9,827)

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Brian Horwitz
Brian Horwitz

Brian Horwitz's tournament has come to an abrupt end, the major damage caused by Casey Stewart.

In a flurry of betting activity, Stewart was all in with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and needing to avoid an ace or king, as Horwitz held {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}.

He managed to do just that as the five community cards fell {10-Spades}{5-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}{10-Diamonds} to improve Stewart to a flush and leave Horwitz with only 6,000 chips.

Those 6,000 doubled on the next hand when his {A-Spades}{5-Hearts} beat Ahmed Amin's {K-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, but he crashed out after the very next hand when his {8-Spades}{5-Clubs} was no match for Stewart's {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} on a {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} board.

Oshima Ups His Aggression

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Kezu Oshima
Kezu Oshima

Kezu Oshima opened to 16,000 from under the gun and after Tom McCormick folded, Anton Smirnov three-bet to 60,000. Oshima eventually folded and Smirnov claimed the pot.

That brief hand only tells part of the story because Oshima has becoming extremely aggressive during the past couple of levels, opening pots seemingly for fun. It's a strategy that is reaping dividends because he's now the chip leader with 11 players left with over 500,000 chips.
