Gregory Kolo Leads As Final Table Finishes With Eight Players

Nível 20 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
Gregory Kolo
Gregory Kolo

Ten more 60-minute levels were played today in Event #12 of the 2014 World Series of Poker, the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em and during that time the 69 returning players were reduced to only eight. Gregory Kolo leads those eight back into battle on Thursday afternoon.

The money bubble burst early on in the day and actually resulted in two players being paid because Geffrey Klein and Jacob Bazeley both busted on different tables while the tournament was in the hand-for-hand stage and therefore split the 63rd place money of $2,443.

Some of the players who reached the money places but failed to progress to Day 3 included Marvin Rettenmaier, Ryan D'Angelo, Tony Gregg, Joseph Cheong, Keven Stammen, reigning world champion Ryan Riess, David Peters, Darryll Fish, and the legendary Phil Ivey who would have been still in the tournament had Anton Smirnov not caught a lucky turn to send the nine-time bracelet winner to the rail.

Towards the end of the night, the remaining 10 layers sat down at the unofficial final table, which quickly became official when the aforementioned Smirnov crashed out.

The final nine battled it out for the best part of 90 minutes before a relative cooler sent Phil Collins home earlier than he would have wished.

A raise to 24,000 in late position by Kuza Oshima was met with calls from Gregory Kolo (button) and Dan Goldman (small blind) before Collins (big blind) raised to 120,000 from the big blind. Oshima folded, Kolo potted, Goldman folded and Collins called.

Collins turned over {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and was in a whole world of pain against the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} of Kolo. His situation got worse when the flop came down {3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{K-Hearts} followed by the {8-Diamonds} turn and {6-Diamonds} river.

That left the final table with eight players and they return to the Amazon Room of the Rio at 1:00p.m. on Thursday to play for the title of champion, which comes with a $169,225 prize and a coveted gold bracelet.

Here's how the players will line up:

Phil Collins Eliminated in 9th Place ($12,610)

Nível 20 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
Phil Collins
Phil Collins

Former November Nine member Phil Collins has busted in a cooler of a hand here at the final table of Event #12.

Kuza Oshima raised to 24,000 from late position and two players called. Gregory Kolo called on the button and Dan Goldman called from the small blind. This put the action onto Phil Collins in the big blind and he raised to 120,000. Oshima folded but Kolo repotted, Goldman folded and Collins put in the rest of his stack.

Collins: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Kolo: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

Collins looked disappointed and rightly so because his WSOP bracelet dreams look set to be dashed. His tournament life hung by the balance as the {3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{K-Hearts} flop came into view, making Collins' position even more precarious. The {8-Diamonds} turn left Collins drawing dead, rendering the {6-Diamonds} river meaningless.

Game over for Collins but definitely game on for Kolo, the tournament's new chip leader.

Anton Smirnov Eliminated in 10th Place ($9,827)

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Anton Smirnov

Anton Smirnov opened to 35,000 from middle position and Phil Collins potted to 120,000 from the button. Smirnov quickly made the call and was all in.

Smirnov: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}

Collins: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

Collins caught his king on the {k-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} flop and the board ran out {7-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. Collins wins the race and Smirnov is out.

We have now reached our official final table of nine.

Casey Stewart Eliminated in 11th Place ($9,827)

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Casey Stewart
Casey Stewart

David Martirosyan opened to 16,000, Ryan Schoonbaert called from the button and Casey Stewart came along from the big blind.

The flop was {j-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Clubs} and Stewart checked. Martirosyan fired 22,000 and Schoonbaert called. Stewart announced "all in," for 72,000 and Martirosyan also pushed all in. Schoonbaert folded and it was Stewart at risk with the {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}.

Martirosyan tabled the {q-Spades}{6-Spades} and Stewart said "nice hand," and patted the table before the turn card even came. Sure enough, the {3-Spades} fell on the turn and the {k-Diamonds} completed the board.

Martirosyan made his flush and continues to find all the right moves.

Oshima Ups His Aggression

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Kezu Oshima
Kezu Oshima

Kezu Oshima opened to 16,000 from under the gun and after Tom McCormick folded, Anton Smirnov three-bet to 60,000. Oshima eventually folded and Smirnov claimed the pot.

That brief hand only tells part of the story because Oshima has becoming extremely aggressive during the past couple of levels, opening pots seemingly for fun. It's a strategy that is reaping dividends because he's now the chip leader with 11 players left with over 500,000 chips.

Brian Horwitz Eliminated in 12th Place ($9,827)

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Brian Horwitz
Brian Horwitz

Brian Horwitz's tournament has come to an abrupt end, the major damage caused by Casey Stewart.

In a flurry of betting activity, Stewart was all in with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and needing to avoid an ace or king, as Horwitz held {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}.

He managed to do just that as the five community cards fell {10-Spades}{5-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}{10-Diamonds} to improve Stewart to a flush and leave Horwitz with only 6,000 chips.

Those 6,000 doubled on the next hand when his {A-Spades}{5-Hearts} beat Ahmed Amin's {K-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, but he crashed out after the very next hand when his {8-Spades}{5-Clubs} was no match for Stewart's {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} on a {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} board.

Scott Eskenazi Eliminated in 14th Place ($7,812)

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Scott Eskenazi
Scott Eskenazi

Scott Eskenazi was left nursing a tiny stack containing 17,000 after his {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} ran into David Martirosyan's {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} in an all-in preflop confrontation. The board ran {10-Spades}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Eskenazi had to hand over 98,000 of his stack.

A couple of hands later, he was all in from under the gun for those 17,000 chips and Ahmed Amin reraised him to 28,000. The other active players folded, Eskenazi opened {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and saw that his opponent held {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

By the river the board had run {J-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and with that Eskenazi was done and dusted.

Raymond Matthaei opened to 13,000 from early position and Gregory Kolo three-bet to 43,000 from the button, which was enough to put Matthaei all in.

Matthaei made the call and tabled {7-Spades}{7-Hearts} versus the {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} of Kolo. The board ran out {5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{3-Spades}{k-Hearts} and Matthaei is gone.
