Abrams Leads Final 20 as Day 2 Concludes

Nível 18

Less than half a starting field of 372 returned for today's second day of play in Event #50: $2,500 10-Game Mix, and after 10 more one-hour levels it was last year's 12th-place Main Event finisher Scott Abrams who had collected the most chips of anyone to end the night as leader with 20 players remaining.

The field quickly whittled down during the first couple of hours of play, and by the dinner break they were already down to 44 players and just two off the money. The first hands back from break then saw Michael Fant and Steven McLoughlin swiftly lose their short stacks and the money bubble had burst.

Start-of-day-2 chip leader Howard Smith was one of the first to cash by finishing in 39th. Among those following Smith to the rail were Scott Fischman (38th), Dan O'Brien (36th), Freddy Deeb (31st), Marcel Luske (30th), Trai Dang (29th), Gavin Smith (28th), Kenna James (26th), Shawn Buchanan (25th), and Rep Porter (23rd).

The last elimination of the evening was five-time bracelet winner and 1998 Main Event champion Scotty Nguyen in 21st place. Nguyen tangled repeatedly with Abrams during the latter portion of the evening, and finally met his end in a hand of stud that saw Abrams make a better two pair.

Those chips helped Abrams build a wide margin by night's end with a stack 351,700, with Sebastian Saffari, Philip Sternheimer, and Brian Tate his nearest competitors. Robert Williamson III likewise returns to a 200,000-plus chip stack, with Mike Wattel, Greg Raymer, David Emmons, Bruno Fitoussi, and Konstantin Puchkov among those still with hopes of landing the 10-Game Mix bracelet.

Play resumes tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time as will our coverage. Return then to see who becomes the next WSOP gold bracelet winner.

Shortly after Benjamin Dobson fell in 22nd place to Greg Raymer in a hand of 2-7 Triple Draw, Scotty Nguyen was eliminated in 21st after losing the last of his stack in a stud-8 hand to Scott Abrams.

In Nguyen's last hand, he and Abrams had made it to fifth street with Abrams betting out and Nguyen calling, then the pair followed the same pattern on sixth.

Abrams: ({x-}{x-}) / {K-Spades}{2-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Nguyen: ({x-}{x-}) / {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

Abrams bet dark before seventh street was dealt, and when Nguyen checked his final card he pushed in the last of his chips as a call. Abrams tabled {K-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} for kings and fours, while Nguyen showed {5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} for a lesser two pair and what appeared a busted flush draw.

Nguyen is out, and right now Abrams leads the 20 players who remain.

Sebastion Saffari{x-}{x-} / {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{2-Spades} / {x-}

We picked up with the action on sixth street to find Shawn Buchanan check over to Sebastion Saffari. Saffari fired out a bet and Buchanan called to see seventh. Both players peeked at their final cards and Buchanan checked once again. Saffari fired out one more bet and Buchanan went into the tank. He pondered for roughly a minute before shrugging and moving out a call.

Saffari rolled over {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{2-Hearts} for two pair- kings and jacks. Buchanan mucked his cards and watched as the pot was pushed to Saffari.

This hand left Buchanan crippled with around 2,200 and he was eliminated from play a few hands later in 25th place.

Omaha-8

We've lost two more from the field as both Freddy Deeb and Marcel Luske have hit the rail during the Omaha-8 round at their respective tables.

Deeb fell in 31st place after getting the last of his chips in following a {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs} versus James's {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts}. The turn was the {9-Clubs} and the river the {J-Spades}, and Deeb was out.

Luske was eliminated shortly thereafter in 30th after losing his last hand to Daniel Makowsky.

No-Limit Hold'em

Action folded around to Scotty Nguyen's button and he made it 2,500 to go. Joseph DeLuca three-bet to 6,500 from the small blind and the big blind folded. Nguyen flat called to see a flop.

The dealer fanned {8-Spades}{7-Spades}{K-Clubs} on the table and DeLuca continued out for 7,400. Nguyen stuck around and both players checked the {9-Hearts} on fourth street. The board completed with the {8-Clubs} and DeLuca checked for a second time. Nguyen announced a 12,000-chip bet and DeLuca went into the tank for about forty-five seconds. Eventually DeLuca decided to call but mucked his cards after Nguyen showed {K-Hearts}{q-Spades} for top pair. Nguyen scooped up the pot and now has about 105,000 in chips.

Back in the Mix: Day 2 Awaits

Mixed-game master Bruno Fitoussi hopes to break through and win a WSOP bracelet in Event No. 50
Mixed-game master Bruno Fitoussi hopes to break through and win a WSOP bracelet in Event No. 50

If you are a poker fan who enjoys variety, you've found the right place. Welcome back to Day 2 of Event 50: $2,500 10-Game Mix (Six-Handed), the most varied event on the WSOP schedule that requires players to rotate through 10 different poker variants — no-limit hold'em, razz, limit hold'em, Badugi, seven-card stud, 2-7 no-limit single draw, Omaha hi-low, pot-limit Omaha, 2-7 fixed-limit triple draw, and seven-card stud hi-low.

Yesterday's Day 1 saw 372 players sit down to play all 10 games against one another, and by night's end less than half of them — 146 — still had chips. Of those Howard Smith had collected the most of the coveted round discs during the eight one-hour levels of play, ending the evening having grown his starting stack of 7,500 up to 61,625.

Others returning to big stacks to start play today include Bruno Fitoussi, currently in second position. Fitoussi is in search of his first WSOP bracelet although the Frenchman has several deep finishes in mixed game tournaments to his credit, including a runner-up in the 2007 $50K H.O.R.S.E. championship and an eight in last year's $50K Poker Players Championship (an 8-game event). Meanwhile, Trai Dang, Christopher George, Marcel Luske, Scotty Nguyen also have more than twice the average at present.

There's still a long way to go, however, as the challenge of handling a table full of opponents and constantly changing games continues for this stack field. Play resumes at 2 p.m. local time, so come back here then for continuing coverage as we find out together who will capture the next World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

Meanwhile, to catch you up on all of the action both yesterday and today, here's Sarah Grant with the June 28th update:
