Mixing It Up on Day 3 of the OE

Current WSOP POY leader Daniel Negreanu looking to stretch his lead some more
Current WSOP POY leader Daniel Negreanu looking to stretch his lead some more

Welcome back to PokerNews' coverage of Event #5: $2,500 Omaha/Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low 8-or-Better at the 2013 World Series of Poker. Today marks the third and final day of this event, and it is one that will eventually see a winner crowned. Of the 19 players remaining, Mike Gorodinsky leads the way with 330,500 in chips.

Plenty of firepower still remains in the pack of players who trail Gorodinsky, including Daniel Negreanu, George Danzer, Matthew Ashton and David "Bakes" Baker, and they'll all be vying for the $216,958 top prize that comes along with winning the WSOP gold bracelet.

All eyes will surely be on Negreanu, who aims to capture his sixth piece of WSOP hardware. Negreanu currently leads the 2013 WSOP Player of the Year race thanks to a massive performance at the WSOP Asia-Pacific in April, and he will be looking to further distance himself from the pack in hopes of a repeat performance from 2004 when he won the title.

Action is set to kick off at 2 p.m. local time here in Las Vegas. If you're in the area, come on down and sweat the action, but if you're not, stay glued right here to these pages all day long. We'll see you shortly for the start of the day, so stay tuned!

Matusow: {x-}{x-} / {a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{q-Spades}{8-Spades} / {x-}

George Danzer completed after Mike Gorodinsky brought in, and Matusow was the only caller. From there, this was the action on every single street: Matusow would check, Danzer would bet fairly quickly, and Matusow would call. After he was called on seventh, Danzer said "just threes." Matusow asked if he had a low, and when Danzer said no, Matusow proudly showed the {7-Hearts} in the hole for just a pair of sevens, which was good enough to take the nice pot. "Good call Mike," is all Danzer could say as the chips went Matusow's way.

David "Bakes" Baker({6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}) / {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Picking up the action on fourth street, Kristopher Tong checked before David "Bakes" Baker bet. Tong check-raised, and Baker called. On fifth street, Tong led with a bet, and Baker raised all in. Tong called and revelaed his trip kings. Baker had a pair of sixes at the time, but also three cards to a low.

Tong picked up the {10-Clubs} on sixth, and Baker added the {7-Clubs}. Tong finished with the {5-Spades} on the river and had just trip kings. Baker had a straight draw and a low draw, but the {6-Hearts} gave him trip sixes and that wasn't good enough to give him any of the pot. He was eliminated in 19th place and earned $6,551 for his finish.

Ahmed Scoops Danzer

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante

Omaha-8

It hasn't been a good start for last year's runner up George Danzer. He came into today as one of the top five stacks, but he has quickly lost two big pots, and is now one of our shortest. We caught up with the action between Danzer and Owais Ahmed on the flop, which read {8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. Ahmed checked, and Danzer bet out. Ahmed put in a check raise, and Danzer called. From there, Ahmed bet the {k-Hearts} on the turn, and the {7-Clubs} on the river. Danzer called both times, and Ahmed tabled {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}{4-Spades}{8-Clubs} for aces and sevens with an ave-four low. Danzer looked at his cards, said "I should have scooped that pot," and mucked his hand, dropping him down to 75,000. Meanwhile, Ahmed rocketed up to 270,000, putting him near our chip leaders.

Danzer Bounces Back

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante

Well as soon as we were talking about how rough a day Danzer has had, he takes two big pots to get back up to his starting stack of the day. We missed the first one, but on the second one, we saw him take a ton of chips from Mike Matusow. We caught the action on the turn, with the board reading {j-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Matusow check called a bet from Danzer, and the same happened when the {3-Hearts} hit the river. Matusow reluctantly called, saying "you probably have aces." Sure enough, Dazner rolled over {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, and Matusow mucked.

With that pot, Danzer is all the way back up to 180,000, while Matusow plummets to 38,000.

James Van Alstyne Eliminated in 18th Place ($6,551)

Nível 19 : 6,000/12,000, 1,500 ante

Stud-8

James Van Alstyne({8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}) / {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}{6-Spades}
George Danzer({8-Spades}{4-Hearts}) / {5-Spades}{6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Former World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner James Van Alstyne was all in on fifth street after he bet and George Danzer raised him all in. Van Alstyne called and showed that he had two pair, eights and fours, with three cards to a low. Danzer had made a straight on fifth street and also had an eight low.

Van Alstyne picked up the {A-Spades} and {10-Spades} on sixth and seventh, respectively, but that wasn't good to keep him alive. Danzer finished with the {A-Clubs} and {A-Diamonds}, keeping his eight-high straight and eight low the winning hand.

Van Alstyne finished in 18th place and earned $6,551.
