Marco Johnson knows plenty about finishing runner-up at a WSOP event. He has done it three times now, including in this very event last year, as well as a runner-up finish in an event just last week. Well today, Johnson wouldn't be denied, as he took down Event #48 $2,500 Limit Hold’em (Six-Handed) for his first elusive bracelet, and $206,796.

The big story coming into the day was David “Bakes” Baker looking for his fifth final table at this year’s WSOP. He came into the day as one of the shorter stacks, and was never able to get anything going, as he busted in 10th place. We also lost Mike Watson along the way to the unofficial final table, after Watson managed to secure at least three double ups.

The first player to bust from the unofficial final table was Danny Le, who started the day as the chip leader. He was the short stack coming into the last table, and busted when Michael Shiffman’s ace-queen caught up to his pocket fours on the turn.

If you wanted an idea of how swingy a game limit hold’em can be, look at Maria Ho’s day. Ho started the day in the middle of the pack, and quickly built up a monster chip lead. She carried that lead into the final table, but from there, everything went wrong for her, as she lost every pot she entered on her way to busting in 6th place.

From there, we lost Schiffman in 5th place when his flopped two pair was rendered virtually useless by the turned set of Marco Johnson. Not long after, Danny Warchol busted in fourth in a pot that gave Johnson a big chip lead going into his three handed battle with Juha Helppi and Jeff Thompson.

Three handed play lasted through the dinner break, with Johnson never letting go of the lead. Eventually, Helppi bowed out in 3rd when his pocket fours couldn’t catch up with the jacks of Thompson.

Going into heads up play, Johnson help a 1.6 million to 900,000 lead over Thompson, and the two went back and forth for about 20 minutes before Johnson won two big hands in a row. On the last hand, Johnson held middle pair, and Thompson had an open ended straight draw. He couldn’t hit it, and the bracelet was Johnson’s!

Congratulations again to Marco Johnson for finally breaking through at a WSOP event. Stay tuned for more live coverage as always at PokerNews.com.

Juha Helppi Eliminated in 3rd Place ($82,956)

Nível 26 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante
Juha Helppi - 3rd Place
Juha Helppi - 3rd Place

Juha Helppi's tournament came to an end after two crucial hands failed to go the Finnish pro's way.

First, Jeff Thompson opened for a raise, Marco Johnson reraised, and Helppi made it four bets to play before the flop. Both opponents flatted and the flop came {4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

Johnson checked to Helppi, who obliged with a bet, and Thompson made it two bets to go. This folded Johnson, but Helppi came along to see the {9-Hearts} fall on the turn.

After Helppi checked, Thompson continued with a bet, and this moved Helppi off his hand.

Just a few hands later Johnson opened for a raise holding the button, Helppi reraised, and Thompson made it three bets to play. Johnson called, and Helppi did as well, although this put him all in for his last bet.

On the {k-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop, Thompson bet out, and Johnson got out of the way.

Showdown:

Thompson: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Helppi: {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}

Thompson had Helppi on the ropes with an overpair, and the turn ({q-Clubs}) offered no help. The dealer burned and turned the river card, and the {7-Diamonds} ended Helppi's tournament life in 3rd place.

Danny Warchol Eliminated in 4th Place ($55,457)

Danny Warchol - 4th Place
Danny Warchol - 4th Place

A massive pot developed involving all four players, and Danny Warchol was victimized for the rest of his stack.

The action started when Warchol opened for a raise, with his stack already shortened from a previous loss. Juha Helppi, Marco Johnson, and Jeff Thompson all flatted to see the flop fall {9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}.

When it was checked around to him, Warchol moved his last bet into the middle, and all three opponents came along.

The turn brought the {7-Diamonds}, and Johnson fired out a bet. Thompson raised it up and made it two bets to play, a move which prompted Johnson to flat call.

Johnson got one more bet in on the {3-Spades} river, and Thompson called while revealing the {6-Spades}{7-Spades} for trips on the turn. Holding the {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for trips with a bigger kicker, Johnson won the side pot, and when Warchol could table only the {A-Spades}{8-Clubs}, he was eliminated in 4th place.

Johnson stormed to a huge chip lead with the win, while Thompson dropped a chunk of change with the second best hand.

Mike Schiffman Eliminated in 5th Place ($38,905)

Michael Schiffman - 5th Place
Michael Schiffman - 5th Place

Mike Schiffman saw Marco Johnson raise before the flop, and he made it three bets to play. Johnson flatted and the flop fell {a-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}.

Schiffman led out for a bet, Johnson smooth called, and the turn came {10-Diamonds}.

When Schiffman fired a second barrel, Johnson sprung his trap with a raise, and Schiffman quickly got his last bet into the middle.

Showdown:

Schiffman: {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Johnson: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Both players had a huge piece of the board, with Schiffman flopping two pair and turning the nut flush draw. Johnson found a set on the turn, however, and Schiffman needed help to survive. Unfortunately for him, the river bricked off, and he made his exit from the final table in 5th place.

Maria Ho Eliminated in 6th Place ($26,858)

Maria Ho

Maria Ho came into the final table as our chip leader, but nothing went her way when she came to the secondary feature table, as she lost every pot that she entered. In the final hand, Ho tried to commit all her chips preflop, but she had to leave 4,000 behind because of the betting limits. Marco Johnson and Juha Helppi called from the blind, and the flop came {a-Clubs}{3-Spades}{7-Spades}. It was checked to Ho, who bet her final 4,000, and the two players called. They then checked the {5-Hearts} on the turn, and the {6-Spades} on the river.

Johnson announced "queen high", and Helppi showed {j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for a pair. Ho let out a big sigh, and mucked her cards, though they had to be tabled: {k-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for king high. Ho exited the area in 6th place, while Helppi jumped up to 390,000.

Danny Le Eliminated in 7th Place ($19,430)

Mike Schiffman raised it up, and Danny Le called out of the small blind. The flop came down {q-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, and Le fired out a bet. Schiffman called, and Le bet out again on the {7-Diamonds} turn. This time, Schiffman raised, which was enough to put Le all in. He thought for about 20 seconds before committing the rest of his stack.

Schiffman: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Le: {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}

Le was looking for a four and a four only, but the river was the {10-Spades}. Le busted short of the official final table, while Schiffman is up to 440,000.

Mike Watson - 8th Place

Mike Watson lost a big hand to Mike Schiffman, when he could not produce a pair and Schiffman's {3-Spades}{7-Spades} was good on the {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{2-Hearts} board, and he was eliminated soon afterward.

Marco Johnson did the deed, after Watson got his last four bets in before the flop. Johnson held the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}, while Watson tabled the {A-Spades}{5-Clubs}.

Flop: {9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Turn: {8-Spades}
River: {q-Clubs}

Johnson flopped an open-ender, and the turn gave him the nut straight. Watson stood to make his exit, and he earned $19,430 for his 8th place finish here today.

With the second shortest stack heading back from break, Juha Helppi made his stand with {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, getting four bets in before the flop against Jeff Thompson.

Thompson tabled the {J-Spades}{Q-Hearts}, and Helppi's ace-high was in the lead. The final board of {k-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} kept Helppi in front, and he earned a desperately needed double to remain in contention.

Maria Ho Has Here Ladies Backing Her Up Here Today

With Maria Ho attempting to win her first gold bracelet in an open event, while the Ladies Championship is being held on the same day, the last woman to achieve the feat has taken to the rail to support her friend.

Vanessa Selbst has just arrived to sweat Ho, along with fellow female pro Tiffany Michelle, and Selbst has already made her presence felt.

"You trying to bluff my girl?," she jokingly asked Juha Helppi. "We gonna have a problem here?"

Holding the chip lead with just eight players remaining, Ho is definitely in position to join Selbst as one of the few women to win an open event at the WSOP.
