Brandon Steven Leads as 108 Advance to Day 2

Nível 10 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Brandon Steven
Brandon Steven

The 2013 World Series of Poker continued today with the biggest buy-in event of the summer—Event #47: $111,111 One Drop High Rollers No-Limit Hold'em. Last year, the $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop became the largest buy-in tournament ever held, and this year’s became the largest field ever to play a six-figure buy-in event as 166 players created a prize pool of $17,891,148. After ten one-hour levels of play, the man best positioned to make a run at the $4,830,619 first-place prize is Brandon Steven, who bagged up 1.398 million to lead the 108 advancing players.

Steven got some of his chips when he eliminated LAPC champ Paul Klann and then acquired even more in Level 8 (1,500/3,000/500) when he spiked a two-outer on the river to crack Tom "durrrr" Dwan's aces and send the online legend to the rail. In the last level of the night, he was on the good end of a set-over-set flop against Roger Sippl, which helped him solidify his chip lead.

Prior to today, the largest field size and prize pool in a six-figure buy-in event was the 2013 GuangDong Ltd. Asia Millions HK$1,000,000 (approx. $130,000) Main Event which had 125 entries (71 unique and 54 re-entries). Obviously that number was blown out of the water here in Las Vegas.

Many players took advantage of playing in the record-setting tournament and managed to punch their ticket to Day 2 including Tobias Reinkemeier (1.225 million), Dan Shak (999,000), Jason Mo (975,000), Ben Lamb (855,000), Matt Glantz (854,000), Bobby Baldwin (839,000), Daniel Negreanu (785,000), John Juanda (720,000), Jean-Robert Bellande (719,000), Vivek Rajkumar (674,000), Johnny Chan (655,000) and Jason Koon (644,000), just to name a few.

Unfortunately not everyone was so lucky. Among those to hit the rail on Day 1 were Alexey Rybin (the first to go), Sam Trickett, Isaac Haxton, Philipp Gruissem, Dan Smith, Michael Mizrachi, Bryn Kenney, Erick Lindgren, Ben "bttech86" Tollerene, Phil Ivey, Faraz Jaka and Scott Seiver.

Seiver’s demise came in Level 9 (2,000/4,000/500) when he was flipping for his tournament life holding the {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} against the {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} of Amit Makhija. According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Seiver had a 56.65% chance of surviving the hand and Makhija would win 42.95% of the time. The {4-Clubs}{6-Spades}{10-Hearts} flop kept Seiver firmly in the lead and increased his chances of winning to 75.25%, while the {3-Clubs} turn pushed it up to 86.36%. All Seiver needed to do was dodge a king and ace on the river to double, but he couldn't do it as the {K-Hearts} spiked.

Day 2 will kick off at 13:00 PST, and as always, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the action and eliminations from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Online Legends do Battle and One Will Fall

Nível 9 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Ben Tollerene
Ben Tollerene

You're more likely to find Gus Hansen and Ben "bttech86" Tollerene playing at the same table on the virtual felt, but today's tournament was special as the two online legends squared off in the live realm right here at the World Series of Poker.

According to Jason Koon, the dynamic duo recently went up against one another that saw one of them hit the rail. It began when Tollerene opened for 7,500 under the gun and two players flatted. Hansen then three-bet to 34,500 from the small blind, Tollerene four-bet to 90,000, the two limpers folded and the "Great Dane" made the call.

After the flop fell {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, Hansen checked and Tollerene bet 80,000. Hansen tanked for five minutes before calling and saying, "I'm sorry."

Hansen then checked the {k-Hearts} turn and snap-called when Tollerene moved all in. Hansen tabled the {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for a flopped set, and Tollerene was drawing dead with the {a-Spades}{k-Spades}. The meaningless river was run out and Tollerene was bounced from the tournament.

Steven Binks a Two-Outer to Bust Dwan

Nível 8 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Tom Dwan - Eliminated
Tom Dwan - Eliminated

Tom Dwan raised to 7,800 from under the gun, Roger Sippl called in the hijack seat, and Brandon Steven three-bet to 32,000 on the button. Dwan called, and Sippl folded.

"How much you got there?" Steven asked Dwan. "Like One-Sixty?"

"No," Dwan responded. "It's like three-hundred."

Steven was surprised by this.

The flop fell {4-Spades}{j-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Dwan checked, Steven fired out 37,000, Dwan check-raised to what looked like 94,000, Steven put in a re-raised, and Dwan moved all in. Steven called.

"You have a set of jacks?" Steven asked.

Dwan shook his head, revealing {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} for a pair of aces.

"Damn," Steven sighed, showing {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}. "But I got a backdoor flush draw."

Steven's hopes of a flush were dashed when the {5-Hearts} turned, but the {q-Spades} spiked on the river to give him a set of queens and eliminate Dwan from the tournament.

"Wow," Steven said, sincerely. "I'm sorry, man."

"It's OK," Dwan shrugged, getting up to leave. "Put those to good use."

After the hand, Steven explained that Dwan's chip count threw him off.

"I thought he had a lot less," Steven admitted. "I would've played the hand completely different."

Over at the feature table, Freddy Deeb was eliminated with unknown action.

Three players took a flop of {9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, including Tom Dwan, Alex Venovski and Roger Sippl. Dwan checked, Venovski fired out 14,000, and Sippl raised to 40,000. Dwan moved all in for 123,900, Venovski folded, and Sippl called.

Dwan: {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Sippl: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The {j-Diamonds} on the turn didn't connect with Dwan's hand, but the {6-Diamonds} on the river gave him two pair, doubling him to 285,000 chips. Sippl slipped to 60,000.

durrrr vs. daPHUNNIEman

Joe "daPHUNNIEman" Kuether

Tom "durrrr" Dwan and Joe "daPHUNNIEman" Kuether were heads up on a flop of {9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}. Dwan led out for 8,500, Kuether called, and the turn was the {3-Diamonds}. Dwan tossed out 28,000, Kuether tank-called, and the {2-Clubs} completed the board.

Dwan emptied the chamber, firing a third and final bullet worth 78,000, and this time Kuether raised. The Wisconsinite made it 165,000 to go, sending Dwan into the tank. After a few minutes of stretching, making faces, and study Kuether, Dwan splashed enough chips forward to make the call.

Kuether ripped over {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a flush, and Dwan mucked his hand.

We arrived in the midst of the action with Tobias Reinkemeier on the button having 30,000 in front of him and Dan Smith in the small blind with 73,500 in front of him.

After a a little while in the tank, Reinkemeier shoved with the bigger stack. Smith called all in for about 220,000 with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, trailing Reinkemeier's {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}. The board ran out {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{4-Clubs} bringing no help to Smith, ending his tournament.

Philbort Doesn't Survive Doc

Nível 6 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

We saw some commotion over at the feature table and made our way over just in time to see Germany's Philipp "Philbort" Gruissem get his stack in holding the {j-Spades}{7-Spades} on a {9-Spades}{3-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop. He was up against none other than David "Doc" Sands, who had flopped a set with the {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}.

According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Gruissem's gutshot straight flush draw gave him a 34.75% chance of surviving the hand while Sands was a 65.25% favorite.

Gruissem didn't seemed too worried, that is until the dealer burned and turned the {9-Diamonds}. The paired board gave Sands a full house and meant that Gruissem needed to hit his straight flush to stay alive. Unfortunately for him, there was only a 2.27% chance of that happening. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {6-Clubs}. Gruissem, who is known as one of the most successful high rollers in the game, wished the remaining players well and then slowly strolled out of the tournament area.

Meanwhile, Kathy Lehne, the founder, President and CEO of SunCoast Resources we told you about earlier and one of only two women in the field, appears to have been eliminated from the tournament.

Massive Double for the Magician

Antonio Esfandiari doubles

Richard Yong opened to 3,200 from under the gun, Antonio Esfandiari three-bet to what looked like 9,000 or so in the cutoff, and Yong called.

"Never Bluff Richard," Esfandiari nicknamed Yong. "You never bluff."

The flop fell {7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, and the man that "never bluffs" reached for chips. He fired out 12,000, Esfandiari raised to 30,100, and Yong pushed back, re-raising to 92,000. Not to be outdone, Esfandiari re-raised, making it 190,100, and Yong quickly went all in.

"Call," Esfandiari announced, committing his last 299,100 chips.

Yong: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Esfandiari: {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

Yong had flopped a set of nines, but Esfandiari was drawing very live with a gut-shot straight flush draw. The dealer was prepared to quickly deliver the turn and river, but Esfandiari stopped her.

"Stop!" he exclaimed. "Stop!"

He wanted to soak up the moment for a bit, then finally allowed her to deal the turn card - the {8-Clubs}. Esfandiari could now make a better full house with a ten on the river.

The river was not a ten, but the {5-Hearts} spiked onto the felt to give Esfandiari a flush. He jumped out of his chair in excitement, running across the secondary feature table stage.

"Good luck," Yong told him, shaking his hand, but Yong was not eliminated. He still remains at the secondary feature table with around 17,000 chips.

Sam Trickett Eliminated

Sam Trickett chatting with Antonio Esfandiari before the tournament kicked off

Last year Sam Trickett made it to the heads up stage of the $1.000.000 buy in The Big One for One Drop. He will not make a repeat deep run as he has just been eliminated by former November Niner Jason Senti.

Senti opened the hijack to 3,000 and action folded quickly to Sam Trickett in the big blind. He announced all in and after some counting, it turned out to be 40,300 total. Senti gave it some thoughts, eventually calling by tossing two 25,000 chips into the middle. Trickett had a disgusted look on his face as he tabled {A-Spades}{4-Spades}. Senti was in good shape with his {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}.

The flop was as bad as they could come for Trickett: {8-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. He was about to get up from his seat but the {5-Spades} on the turn was as good as they could come and he sat down again "Oh, straight and a flush draw" commented Johnny Chan in the nine seat. The {2-Clubs} on the river was not one of Trickett's outs though and he left the tournament area.
