Hawkins Drops Some

Nível 8 : 250/500, 50 ante

Action folded to Yashar Darien who raised to 1,100 before the flop. He was called by the player in the small blind before Maurice Hawkins raised to 4,500 from the big blind. Darian called, but the player in the small blind folded.

On the {5-Spades}{q-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop, Hawkins continued with a bet of 4,400. Darian called.

The turn was the {Q-Hearts} and Hawkins check called a bet of 4,000 from Darian.

On the {K-Hearts} river, both players checked.

"If you checked then I win," Hawkins said showing his {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}. But he was wrong. Darian showed {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} and scooped the pot with trip queens.

Esfandiari Busts Polychronopoulos

Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Athanasios Polychronopoulos, winner of Event #17 at this year's World Series of Poker, pushed all-in for his last 8,675 pre-flop, and action folded around to Antonio Esfandiari in the big blind. Esfandiari squeezed for dramatic effect, looking only at one card first, then holding his cards above the felt and slightly flashing a king on the bottom. He then looked at the other card, thought for a moment, and threw in chips for a call. Polychronopoulos turned over {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and was slightly ahead of Esfandiari's {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}. The board rolled out {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}, giving Esfandiari a king-high straight and eliminated Polychronopoulos from the tournament. After the hand, Esfandiari had 65,500 chips in front of him.

Ivey Lets One Go

Nível 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Phil Ivey raised to 1,200 from under the gun. The player in the cutoff raised to 3,600. Ivey called.

On the {3-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} flop, Ivey checked to the player who made it 6,500. Ivey let it go.

Even after losing that small pot, Ivey is still above the average ship stack at the moment.

Kelly Takes Some Chips from Hawkins

Nível 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

We arrived at the table on the turn, with the board showing {7-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Dan Kelly and Maurice Hawkins were involved in a hand, and both players checked. Hawkins bet 3,100 when the {j-Spades} fell on the river, and Kelly called. Kelly showed {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}, and Hawkins mucked his hand.

Kelly is up to 67,000, and Hawkins now sits with 51,000.

Mind Versus Heart With Phil Hellmuth

Nível 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

On a flop of {7-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{J-Spades} Phil Hellmuth checked to a player in position who bet 1,300. Hellmuth called.

The turn was the {3-Spades} and Hellmuth changed gears and bet 2,000. The player called.

On the {Q-Clubs} river, Hellmuth bet again, this time 2,900. The player on the button wasn't having it though, he raised to 8,075.

Hellmuth went into the tank, as it would take most of his remaning stack at that point to call. "How much more is it to me?" he asked.

Hellmuth counted out the difference, put a chip on his cards, even counted how many chips he would have left if he called and was wrong. Finally Hellmuth grabbed his calling chips and moved them into the pot.

"You win," the player said turning over his {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}.

Hellmuth showed the {K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and was able to take down the pot.

"I trusted my instincts on that one," Hellmuth said after the hand. "They were screaming out for me to make the call."

"My mind was saying when they raise you on the river they always have it," he continued.

"That's what I wanted you to think," the player said.

"You almost had me, but my heart was telling me to call," Hellmuth said. "I think I would've gone off the deep end if I called and was wrong though."

After that call, Hellmuth has found some new life with chips as the players head into the last level of the night.
