Welcome to Day 1B of the 2014 UKIPT Isle of Man Main Event

Villa Marina
Villa Marina

It's Groundhog Day here at the Villa Marina on the Isle of Man as the second start day will get underway at 12pm local time. With 145 players having entered yesterday, the tournament will need 355 players today to make the £350,000 guarantee. The re-entry format with no doubt ensure a bigger field than yesterday, but the question remains, how big will the field be?

Among those playing today will be Team PokerStars Pros Vicky Coren and Jake Cody, while we are also expecting many of the players who were eliminated yesterday to take a second shot at the tournament. Donald Rae was the chip leader with 154,900 after the first day and his chip count is what everyone will be looking to beat.

Like yesterday, there will be ten one-hour levels with a dinner break after level six with play scheduled to finish at around 11.45pm tonight. Stay tuned for all the action as the UKIPT 'Home Game' continues!

Players who were eliminated yesterday have the chance to fire another £700 + £70 bullet today. Before play started we spoke to one of those players, David K Lappin a member of the Irish poker collective “The Firm.” Lappin busted just before the end of play last night when he squeezed all in with {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} for 25 big blinds and got called by {a-Spades}{8-Spades}.

Lappin admitted that he would rather have had the day off and be returning to grind a short stack on Day 2. He would have had a nice lie in and played the chess tournament but the Main Event represented such good value eh couldn’t pass it up. Suck is the life of a poker pro.

Haxton Crushed (At Chess)

PokerStars Team Online Pro Ike Haxton was talking to another player about the chess games he was playing this morning at a Mind Sports Chess / Poker tournament this morning. “You get crushed?” he was asked. “Yeah.” Haxton croaked.

Haxton at the poker table is another matter entirely. On one of the first hands of the day Haxton opened for 125 under the gun and picked up three callers. A flop of {10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{8-Clubs} saw Haxton bet 350 and get called in one spot. The turn was the {3-Clubs} and Haxton continued for 1,000 and again got a call. The {k-Clubs} completed the board and Haxton was in no mood to slow down firing out 2,500. The bet was called and when Haxton showed {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} his opponent mucked.

“Easy game.” another player offered. “Exceptionally.” was Haxton’s response. Easier than chess for it seems.

Five-Bet Folding Kings

Nível 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

After a limper, Yaniv Peretz raised to 200 from late position. Steven Pritchard made it 850 in the big blind and the limper folded. Peretz came back over the top with a four-bet to 2,100 before Pritchard five-bet to 4,850.

Peretz then announced all in and Pritchard tanked for a couple of minutes. "Will you show if I pass?" he asked. Peretz did not reply.

Finally Pritchard folded {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} face up and Peretz took the pot.

Coren Mitchell Giving Lessons

Two times EPT Champion Victoria Coren Mitchell is on the same table as two times UKIPT Champion Duncan McLellan (on his second bullet). One of them is tucking into a baked potato and the other appears to be on their second pint of lager of the day. We will leave it to you to imagine which is which.

Coren Mitchell raised from late position for 125 and got called by McLellan in the big blind. The flop was {6-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and McLellan check-called a bet of 150 from Coren Mitchell. The turn {6-Clubs} and river {2-Clubs} were both checked and Coren Mitchell declared, “Two pair.” McLellan held on to his hand until he was shown her {a-Spades}{7-Clubs}.

“I declared my hand correctly.” Coren Mitchell said, a smile playing across her face explaining that some players might muck a better hand. “It’s a freeroll. It might work. Not for me.” She then either took a mouthful of potato or a deep swig of lager.
