Germany's Tim Michels Leads as 51 Advance to Day 3

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Tim Michels
Tim Michels

The Full Tilt Poker UKIPT Galway continued on Saturday without the €10,000 Super High Roller, which was unfortunately cancelled. Despite that, the remaining 282 players from an 860-player field returned for eight more one-hour levels of play in the Main Event. By the time the sun set on the west coast of Ireland and the players bagged and tagged for the night, around 51 players remained with Tim Michels, who qualified for this tournament through PokerStars, and his stack of 835,000 leading the way.

Michels got many of those chips after eliminating Aidan Connelly in the penultimate level of the night.

With a €140,000 overlay, everyone had their sights set on making the money at the top 104 and claiming a portion of the guaranteed €1,000,000 prize pool (which was actually €970,000 after fees were taken out). The two men best positioned to make the money, and a run at the €205,600 first-place prize for that matter, were Day 1A chip leader Alan Gold and Day 1B chip leader Damian Porebski, both of who made it through to Day 3.

Other notables who returned to action were Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody; Team Online's Dale Philip; Full Tilt Player Danielle Andersen; well-respected UK pro Max Silver; and Irish Poker Championship winner Trevor Dinneen, but only Phillips and Silver survived the day with 293,000 and 435,000 respectively.

The day kicked off with a bevy of eliminations, including that of Quisito Alfandega, who opened for 4,000 in first position only to have Cody three-bet to 25,000 in the small blind. The big blind folded, Alfandega called and the flop came down {5-Spades}{10-Spades}{8-Spades}. Cody led for 20,200 and then called when Alfandega moved all in. Cody quickly tabled the {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and was well out in front of Alfandega’s {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. Neither the {4-Diamonds} turn nor {6-Diamonds} river changed a thing and Alfandega headed to the exit.

Others who hit the rail shy of the money, and there were a lot of them, were 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event 12th-place finisher John Magill; 2007 WSOP Main Event fifth-place finisher Jon Kalmar; Dave Masters; Daniel Bavec; Chris Derrick, Liam Flood and Full Tilt Poker Croatian Ambassador Hana Soljan.

In Level 15 (2,000/4,000/500), Cody fell when Hung Nguyen, a PokerStars player from Vietnam, moved all in and action reached the Brit in the big blind. “I guess I have to call.” Cody said and then called off with the {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Nguyen showed the {k-Hearts}{2-Clubs} and managed to get lucky after the board ran out {4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades}{2-Spades}{j-Hearts}. With that, Cody, who stone bubbled the High Roller earlier in the week, fell 12 spots shy of off the money.

Speaking of the money, it took just one hand to get there when down to 105 players. It happened later on in Level 15 when Nicholas Newport got his stack of 17,500 all in with the {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts} only to run into the {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} of Full Tilt Poker qualifier Barry Donovan. The sizable rail let out a collective moan upon discovering the cooler, and as it was Newport was in bad shape, though the PokerNews Odds Calculator indicates that he had a 18.55% chance of coming from behind to win the hand. That percentage dropped to 12.02% after the {9-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{9-Hearts} flop failed to help Newport, and the {3-Clubs} turn knocked it down even further to 4.55%. Newport needed a queen on the river to stay alive, but it was not meant to be as the {A-Clubs} peeled off.

From there the in-the-money eliminations came at a rapid pace and included Niall Geraghty (104th - €2,180), Dinneen (95th - €2,180), David Docherty (87th - €2,430), Wesley Wiemes (82nd- €2,430), Derek Murray (75th - €2,430), Hung Nguyen (68th - €2,910), Ambrose Travers (65th - €2,910), Athir Kamal Ali (60th - €2,910) and Roy "The Boy" Brindley (57th - €2,910).

While many fell there are still plenty of contenders remaining including Andrew Dwyer (813,000), Raul Paez (514,000), Padraig Parkinson (397,000) and Dino Sabatini (755,000), just to name a few.

Day 3 will kick off at Noon local time and the remaining players will look to play down to the final table. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be there to bring you all the action, so be sure to check back then. Until then, be sure to check out the following video about Cody getting bluffed. Goodnight from Galway.

Brindley Bounced

Nível 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Roy Brindley
Roy Brindley

A short-stacked Roy "The Boy" Brindley, who opted to call off from the big blind for 90,000 or so against another stack who had pushed but had Brindley covered.

Brindley: {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Big stack: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

Brindley was in trouble and in need of some help. The {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flop put out some chop options, and it came through when the {4-Clubs} turn paired the board. Both players held sixes and fours with an ace kicker and were primed to chop. The dealer burned and put out the {A-Spades}. It took Brindley a moment to realize that both now had aces and sixes but that his opponent's kicker played.

Brindley finished in 57th place.

An Unprecendented Two Pair Fiasco

Nível 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Room View
Room View

We just witnessed a hand go down that in all likelihood we never will see again. We didn't catch the exact hand, but rather what happened after the action was completed.

When we arrived, Dominic Mahoney was pleading his case to the dealer with a board reading (in no particular order) {k-}{10-}{7-}{K-}{x-}. Mahoney declared two pair, and then his opponent, Christine Ann Dunn, tabled {10-}{7-}. Mahoney tossed his cards to the dealer facedown and then had some sort of epiphany.

Mahoney wanted his cards back, which the dealer had pulled within millimeters of the muck without touching it. The entire table was giving their two cents, including Irish poker legend Padraig Parkinson. The general consensus seemed to be that Mahoney had mucked and conceded the hand to Dunn. It wasn't done there though.

Mahoney continued to plead his case until the dealer called the floor. The situation was explained, and even though the floor initially believe the hand to be dead, Mahoney somehow convinced him otherwise, much to Dunn's dismay. Mahoney was very apologetic and admitted that he had made a mistake, but since his cards were retrievable, they should be. The floor then agreed and Mahoney seemed satisfied as the dealer turned over his cards... {3-}{3-}.

No one expected the hand to be a losing one, including Mahoney. He soon realized his folly and to say he was embarrassed would be an understatement. "I need to go get a drink," he said before exiting the room. Needless to say, the rest of the dumbfounded table got a laugh out of the unprecedented situation.

Newport Eliminated on the First Hand of the Bubble

Nicholas Newport bubbles the Full Tilt Poker UKIPT Main Event

That bubble didn't take long, just one hand in fact. On the first hand of hand-for-hand play, Nicholas Newport got his stack of 17,500 all in over at Table 8 and was up against Full Tilt Poker qualifier Barry Donovan.

Action was halted to allow the rest of the tables to complete their hands, a process that took about 90 seconds. During that time a large crowd gathered around the table and waited in anticipation for the two players to reveal their hands. When the time was right, the cards were turned up.

Donovan: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Newport: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

The rail let out a collective moan upon discovering the cooler. Newport was in bad shape, though the PokerNews Odds Calculator indicates that he had a 18.55% chance of coming from behind to win the hand.

Catching Up with FTP Ambassador Martins Adeniya

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Martins Adeniya
Martins Adeniya

Last month Martins Adeniya was announced as one of four Full Tilt Poker ambassadors brought in to represent the online room at all stops of the United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT). His first assignment was the FTP UKIPT Galway Festival, which has been playing out over the last week on the west coast of Ireland.

Adeniya discovered poker while studying business at the University of Bath and quickly worked his way up from low-stakes home games to multi-tabling $10/$20 NL Hold’em online. After earning over $180,000 for a third place finish in the FTOPS Main Event, Martins decided to focus 100% on poker.

Since then Adeinya has become a rising star in the poker world with $487,965 in career earnings dating back to 2009. Among his notable accomplishments are a seventh-place finish in the 2011 EPT/UKIPT London Main Event for $134,964; 13th in the 2010 World Series of Poker $25,000 No Limit Hold’em – Six Handed for $58,699; 9th in the 2010 WSOP $2,500 No Limit Hold’em – Six Handed for $40,547; second in a 2010 Venetian Deep Stack $500 No Limit Hold’em for $28,265; and 474th in the 2009 WSOP Main Event for $25,027. The only win on Adeniya’s résumé came in 2012 in the £500 London Super Stack Series – High Roller for $16,899.

Even though he busted on Day 1a, PokerNews has been keeping tabs on the Londoner all week to see what his life is like. We recently spoke to Adeniya, who was hanging out in the Players' Lounge in the FTP Village on Day 2 of the Main Event.

PokerNews: When we last talked to you on Friday, you were here having a few drinks and checking up on friends. What have you been up to since then?

Adeniya: I've been basically hanging out throughout the day with people, and I played a bit online as well both today and yesterday. We wanted to go to Pure Skill [a nearby sports complex] but a few people are still in the Main Event so we're waiting for them to either bust or get a big stack together. So yeah, it never came together... yet.

Who are you cheering for in the Main Event?

Jake Cody has got some chips at the moment.

He actually just busted.

Oh no. Well, yeah ok, I'm not sure who is still left in then. I need to have a look around the room and see who is still in.

Changing the subject. There's a party here at the FTP Village tonight. Can we expect to see you in attendance?

Yeah, I'm actually looking forward to the party tonight. There was an opening party at the start of the week which had a good turnout. It was a good chance to meet a lot of people. Tonight is going to be even better because everyone is winding down and looking for a good time.

What's your drink of choice at parties?

Vodka Red Bull

What's your favorite game to play here at the FTP Village?

I'm actually enjoying the Pac-Man, and I'm enjoying the pool as well. I suck at both of them. I'm just learning.

So no aspirations to top Gus Hansen's Pac-Man high score?

I've been watching him play a bit and I don't think I'm going to be able to catch him this trip, or even this year. He puts in like eight-hour sessions, longer than I do online.

Between you and your fellow FTP Ambassadors, who is the best pool player?

I'd say it be close between Sin and Dermot. Dermot is actually the best. I had a game with him the first day and asked him if he was any good at pool. He said, "No, I'm not that good." Then we played and he cleaned up, just cleaned up from the break. How could he say he wasn't very good. He played for a pool team that traveled across the country playing.

Like Son Like Father

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Frank Romanello
Frank Romanello

If you heard the surname Romanello, you'd no doubt think of European Poker Tour and World Poker Tour champion Roberto Romanello. He's one of the UK's most popular players, but he's not the Romanello of focus in today's tournament. That honor belongs to his father, Frank Romanello.

While both Romanello's player the Main Event, Roberto busted fairly early. On the flip side, his father is making a deep run, though he did just lose a massive pot that saw his stack of 250,000 or so get cut down to 60,000.

Roberto, who is watching his father from the rail, explained that his dad started playing for fun in the last few years, due in no small part to his son's success. Roberto, who has a brother that is fond of the game, decided to bring his dad to Galway and put him in the event.

It's getting close to the money, so that decision could very well prove fruitful. In the meantime, Frank made his way over to his son and immediately began talking strategy. When it comes to the game of poker, the Romanellos are nothing but focused.

Team PokerStars Pro Bluffed by Gold

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody just got bluffed big time in a massive hand.

It began when Cody opened for 5,000 and then called when Alan Gold, who began the day as chip leader, three-bet to 13,500. Gold then bet 16,500 on the {5-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop, Cody called and the dealer burned and turned the {K-Diamonds}. Gold kept the pressure on with a bet of 27,000, Cody called and the {8-Spades} completed the board on the river.

This time Gold, who had the bigger stack, moved all in to put Cody to the test. The Triple Crown winner thought for over three minutes before shaking his head and tossing his cards to the muck.

"You want to see it?" Gold asked. Cody indicated that he did. Gold then tabled the {q-Hearts}{10-Spades} for a bluff. Cody's face said it all and he got out of his seat for a few moments before taking to Twitter.

Croatian FTP Ambassador Eliminated in Brutal Hand

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Hana Soljan
Hana Soljan

Hana Soljan may be a Full Tilt Poker Ambassador for Croatia, but she made her way to Galway to take part in this prestigious event. Unfortunately for her, a brutal river just put an end to her run.

It happened when Soljan shoved under the gun for around 50,000, which was 25 BBs. The UK's Nathan Gallagher ended up making the call and the rest of the field got out of the way.

Gallagher: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Soljan: {a-}{a-}

Soljan had the granddaddy of all hands and was in a prime spot to double to 100K. The {7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop was safe enough, as was the {J-Diamonds} turn. All Soljan needed to do was dodge a king on the river to stay alive, but as you already know the river was brutal.

That's because the {K-Spades} spiked to send a clearly disappointed Soljan to the rail while the rest of the table collectively shook their heads in disbelief.
